The Troopers' show is great but so filthy dirty musically - and WAY too loud. The kids really gave it their best and sold their show to the big crowd in Annapolis. I loved the uniforms when I saw the release - however they don't pop and look really drab in person against the turf - "dusty" colors tend to do that. I was sad as I really wanted to love them and had hoped they be in finals this year

    Hey George,

Let's put your money where your mouth is. Come on out to rehearsal and I will put you in and you can clean the music to your hearts desire. It seems to me, every comment you've made doesn't say you want to love the corps. To me, at least, it seems like you take every opportunity you have to be negative about them.

I also don't understand, I thought drum corps was supposed to be loud. I guess I missed the point on that part.

Open invitation. Come to rehearsal, help us make it better. Let's see what you got.

  2. BOX5 will be live streaming championships this year. We are very aware that we haven't made any public announcements. We are working on posting something in the next day or so. We have been trying to get the pricing right.  Many of you wanted a combination price instead of our per day price. So we had to work that out and I think we have at this point.

We have also been working on a MUCH, MUCH bigger announcement however.

With that said, pricing for championships will be as follows:

    LIVESTREAM PRICING
    PRELIMS - $39
Includes all prelims corps, Alumni Spectacular and Mini Corps.

    FINALS - $39
    Includes all finals corps

    DCA PRO SUBSCRIPTION - $64
Includes all of Prelims, Alumni Spectacular, Mini-Corps, Finals and any other DCA event we live stream. We are working on securing a better connection at Peckville, so that show is still up in the air.

    BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
BOX5 will be releasing a BluRay of the 2019 DCA Championship Finals. The price is still TBD, all corps performing will be included. The BluRay will include edits to comply with licensing requests and copyright laws. We don't know what those edits are and won't have a good handle on that until we begin to hear back from copyright holders. We will only release 300 discs, once they are gone, they are gone. The discs will go on sale some time in December and available after the 1st of the year.

We are also considering a release of our 4K content of finals. Again, this is very preliminary and will need some feedback from YOU on how we could do that. We are considering a limited run of USB Drives, Download or BluRay Data Disc of the 4K content. UltraHD disc pressing is just not in our wheelhouse or abilities to create the content. As best we can tell, it will be the first 4K product delivered to the marching arts.

There you go, a little insight on what is happening.

  3. Well, Box 5 had technical issues and so did I. T-Mobile's data is dead to me right now, literally. Fortunately, I have my Karma hotspot, which is over the Sprint network, and I am now online with that. The downside was that I couldn't post during Cadence's performance and had to run to my car to get my Karma hotspot during Chops, so I wasn't able to cover their performances today.

    Kevin.

We apologize for the technical issues we had... it was out of our control and DCA officials  were made aware of the situation.

    Enjoy the show !

Pretty much the situation as I thought it was so thanks for the verification. Anymore in these sue happy days I’m happy to be able to see any drum corps. Already signed up for Prelims and my schedule will determine if I will buy Finals

    That's great to hear.

When we come up with a time for re-streaming Peckville, we will let you know.

They know. Note that Tim already responded in this thread.

I'll be attending championships, but I do hope the video works for those who aren't! DCA needs exposure.

The championship show will be great.

Just a little background of what some of you were experiencing with our system.

#1 - Anytime you got a countdown on our website, that meant, for some reason you initiated our brute force filters. Those are in place to prevent hacking the system. I am going to look at those and see if I can raise the tolerances. I will post specific procedures on what to do during issues, later this summer.

#2 - If you ever got, you are already logged in errors. That is a security measure to only allow one login per account.  This more than likely happens when your browser closed (without logging out) and you tried to relogin and the system hadn't cleared it's cache (happens every minute).  I cannot adjust that, that's server side and really not something we are smart enough to do.

#3 - The 23000 errors you were experiencing seems to be drops in data.  Last night we were flirting with the idea of making it free for everyone prior to the show. The stadium was not wired for internet. We were streaming with cellular bonding. Our equipment was not even close to maxed out. During those outages we were seeing spikes at the cell tower and it seems that throttling was happening, this was causing dips in the data stream. Once we reset our equipment we got a new "tunnel" and we we're good the rest of the night.

Why would we experiement?  The goal is to be able to offer more DCA shows in the future and we want to figure out streaming for every DCA show regardless of where it is. We are committed to growing DCA and growing the streaming options.

In terms of our equipment, at championships we will have redundant backup systems for the stream. In Peckville, that was a smaller crew, no dedicated support personnel, I responded to ALOT of your complaints personally last night.

Our streaming server hold 32 CPU. 4 NVIDIA grid GPUs. Each GPU is capable of accepting (4) 1080p or (8) 720p streams.  When processing those streams, each GPU can deliver up to (8) different versions of that stream. All of this is part of the Amazon AWS.

We also use the Amazon cloudfront system to distribute the stream to the end user. This allows us to scale our stream from 1 person to 500,000 in the blink of an eye.

We have great cloud computing, exceeding most large streaming companie anywhere in the world.

I'm here for you, we want this to be a fantastic experience. We found some quirks we can adjust in our system for sure. We were very pleased with our actual product (not streaming) and believe that we have everything in place to make championships one of the best weekends of drum corps on the web.

I can't tell you everything we are planning right now, but keep in mind that we (75% successfully) were able to stream via cellular bonding, that opens up lots of roaming (lot) opportunities for us at championships.

I just ask that we all try to help each other make it great, we are regular people that love drum corps and want better for the community than other companies provide.

My understanding too. 2006 was first year DCA was on web and could watch for a few days later. Also had as package where you could watch some corps shows on demand. Then licensing confusion got cleared up and end of non live shows. And that dvr function ended minute live feed was done. Don't see how they can show a recording either.

In terms of live streaming. We are under the belief based on our understanding of the licenses that we have with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC that we can "LIVE STREAM" any event and music as long as we do our reporting.

We WILL NOT be offering this as a VOD, where you click on a performance and it plays (which btw is how Netflix operates, very different in terms of streaming).

We will email all of those who purchased and let them know specifics.

We believe and so does our counsel, that as long as the show works exactly like a live stream and isn't user initiated it is a live stream. Plus, we want to make sure everyone is able to view the complete shows during the issues.

The reason why in DCA couldn't leave the stream up as they did in the past is because it was a DVR situation. You were able to rewind and recall specific performances. This will not be the same.

I hope that helps clear up what we believe is correct.

Is there any type of test I can run on my Smart TV to see if your product will work (LG 4K 75" - 2017 model) only months old

We can work on a situation to test that.  However, it won't be available until August when I can get back from tour.

  8. Hey All,

I wanted to start a thread to offer some help with our livestream system.  I also wanted to let you know a little about what we are offering this year and how it will be different.  I'm willing to answer any and all questions about how and why we are doing certain things.

First and foremost, I'm Tim Snyder, president of BOX5 Media and also currently the brass caption head of the Mandarins.  Before that, I was the brass caption head of Troopers from 2013-2016 and Oregon Crusaders in 2017.  I've worked with Carolina Crown and the Madison Scouts.  I also write and work with Cincinnati Tradition and have done so the last 6 years.  I'm extremely vested in making this livestream product work for the DCA community.  I certainly have invested a ton of time in the activity that has given me so much as I'm sure all of you have as well.

With that said, we are offering the following products for 2018:

    Peckville, PA - $14

    DCA Prelims / Alumni / Mini-Corps - $39

    DCA Finals / Mini-Corps - $39

    Peckville, PA
This will be a two camera stream with microphones at field level.

    DCA Prelims / Alumni / Mini-Corps
These will be multi-camera productions.  We will have available the option to choose your camera angle when viewing the stream.  These shows will have the option to choose wide angle and the multi-camera angle.  We will be using 3 cameras for these events.

    DCA Finals
This event will be produced using 6 cameras.

    • High Camera
    • Percussion Camera
    • Guard Camera
    • Camera Crane
    • Low Camera
    • Field Camera

We will offer three options for the viewer.  You can watch the high camera, multi-camera production or our multi-view option.  The multi-view option will have the Percussion Camera, Guard Camera, High Camera and Low camera available at all times.  Below is a picture of what that would look like.  In the picture, we are streaming the high camera, mid camera, camera crane and directors cut all in the same window.

    multi-view.jpg

    SIGNING UP
If you don't have a BOX5 account, you will need a BOX5 account.  You can visit http://dcahd.com.  Once there you will be presented with two options.  A big orange picture that says "JOIN NOW" or a place to login if you already have an account.  Once you click on "JOIN NOW"  you will be presented a page that will allow you to enter your information and select the events you're interested in.  If you have any issues, at the bottom of the page there is an orange box that currently says contact us.  Click on that and a pop up will appear and you can shoot us a quick email.  During the show that box will change to live chat and our people will help you out the best way they can.

    DEVICES
We are currently working on developing an appleTV app.  I'm not certain it will be ready for the 2018 event, but we are positive it will be ready for 2019.  We have tested our streams on many different platforms.  Some people have reported issues with some smartTV's.  We are working to clear those up by September.  But we have confirmed that these streams should work on most every mobile device, computer platform (if modern and updated), xbox, playstation 3 & 4 (if updated) and some smartTV's.

Thats about all I can think of right now.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

You should not start All-days until you have at least 80% of members present.  Too many holes to make drill learning effective.  Volunteer staff is strained to the limit.  Would you want to arrive at All-days only to find out that the majority of members are arriving later?

I can tell you that from what I've heard ... OC will move in 90% of their member on day 1.

Things seem to be going very well.  I was at camp this past weekend and heard 75% of the show.  Its pretty incredible.  I can't tell you anything, I don't want to get in trouble by the corps police, but its going to be pretty cool.

Take that for what its worth.
