My favorite is: they want to destroy the corps / they want the corps to fold. One need look no further than the screed of a statement from CAE as they exited the stage. A case study in victim blaming.I think that might be my favorite. This undying save the corps mission and to hell with the collateral damage.

Yeah I heard a few things in the late 70s from an instructor regarding two of our high school aged guard members. Then didn’t think too much of it but today 🤮
Oh I said something to them. It was something like WTH is wrong with you? Those are 16 year old girls.

You should have been in a Senior corps. 👍
Had one snare drummer light a cig just before he was told time to do warm ups. Muttered “I ain’t wasting this” and smoked it while warming up with rest of the line. When done he just turned his head and spit it out about 5 feet. Never missed a beat the whole time.
I was for two seasons 2000 and 2002 . Much different than juniors way back when.
The worst thing I saw was these old men ogling the Capital Sound color guard in 2000. Absolutely revolting.

I was fortunate enough to not have to endure anything that, in my own mind, I ever considered as abuse. But I did have the occasional run in with a certain visual field instructor (most Regiment alums from the 90’s could probably guess who) who tried to jump my case for being injured.
One day, my bad knee was just not cooperating and kept giving out on me. Finally, it just completely buckled and I fell on my ### during a run. So, I took myself out to give it a rest. I intentionally waited until the rest of the corps got a water break before I headed over to get some myself. (I literally hopped over) He saw me getting water and started yelling at me that if I were really hurt, I wouldn’t be able to move at all and just tore into me, essentially saying I was faking.
It royally ###### me off and we both got into a heated argument right there on the sideline. I eventually stormed (hobbled) off to the food truck and, not very long after, the corps director came over to talk about it. I explained what happened and he said not to worry about it, he’d talk to ***. (We then talked about movies for a bit.)
At least that time, I wasn’t kicked off the field. (That was when I told one of the drum majors to p*** off. Heh heh.)
But I did witness (along with everyone else on the field) what I would consider verbal abuse that went way beyond the usual “tough” drum corps rehearsal talk. This person was publicly singled out relentlessly and I felt horrible for her. But when future Hall of Famers that eventually have caption awards named after them were saying it…
Thankfully, I don’t remember hearing anything like that my second year. All of our upper staff/caption heads—several of whom either came on or were promoted the year before (which I had to take off)—were all respectful, even when being critical. I mostly considered the person I dealt with as an occasional nuisance.
I had one instructor say”screw you” to me once and I left. I obviously came back but that’s unnecessary at any time. And counterproductive.
We had an assistant drum major who wasn’t with the corps the whole winter, made up some cockamamie excuse as to why he couldn’t play a horn so in true Peter Principle fashion, they appoint him assistant drum major. FF to summer in some Godforsaken place and we were waiting around for something and a couple people weren’t at parade rest. So he says something stupid like “go to parade rest like we learned in the winter”. Well, me being well… me… I said “How would you know? You weren’t there in the winter.” Next thing I know the real DM is dragging me off the field.

Or Tour 2 and Tour 7
When they started the two tour stuff in 78, I knew that it was going to be my last year.

Guess we’ll be swapping locations. Thankfully I won’t stay in Floridumb. lol
The weather is nice in the winter, the beach is nice and I like my house. But that’s about it. Hahaha I can’t wait to leave for the summer.

For high school, we had to have all white shoes for summer parade (white shorts, the years orange band T shirt, and specific calf high socks that we bought from the school.
Fall uniform was black shoes of our own, must be all black with high black socks.Often the spray paint was pulled out to ensure "all one color" much to the annoyance of parents on a budget trying to balance kids' fashion desires with a need for marching band shoes. [waves]
I became proficient in using tape well enough and picking the most bland shoes I could. So my shoe game was terribly dull until college. When I promptly got the loudest most colorful running shoes I could.
My senior year though we had new uniforms with white pants and white shoes that were uniform marching shoes, so that at least alleviated the shoe budget for some familiesI forgot my black shoes once in Kilties and we put black electric tape over my sneakers. We didn’t have to do the entire shoe because we wore spats.

I couldn't help laughing the first time a DI got in my face and screamed. Once. Never happened again when 3 more of them seemed to surround me like f'ing dementors in the blink of an eye. I think it was because I grew up with generations of military in my family and they all told me that drill instructors/sergeants were just playing a role. Nobody outside of Dickens novels is that much of a caricature and that was my reaction the first time. But yeah, when 4 of them were surrounding me, "accidentally" bumping into me and pushing me around, I got over the laughing thing pronto.
And I did end up having 1 DI out of 5 who was indeed a caricature. Just a nasty little guy who liked having power over others. The other DI's did their best to protect us from him in their own subtle ways.
Back to high school marching band inspection back in the day, if anybody forgot black socks before parade inspection, our band director spray painted our ankles and feet black. Different times.
And @happycomposer, I'm hoping you'll keep us updated about your findings. I've always been curious about this as well but really didn't even know where to begin.
Jim once laughed at what a DI was saying to another Marine and he asked if something was funny. Jim said “Funny as hell, sir!” He ended up doing push-ups.
He has a few funny stories from the Marine Corps. He worked in avionics and one day a REO griped the deceptive electronic countermeasures unit and said it didn’t work in the O.F.F. Position. 🤦♀️

I’ve been going since 2000. Love the show. Only negatives are that it’s usually hot and the band kids are oblivious to their surroundings.
May miss this year as I’m probably going to Orlando for the City vs Barca friendly.
I can handle hot living down here in Floriduh but I am going north for the summer this year. Three summers of swamp hot so it’s time for a little break.

Every corps I ever marched with folded decades ago.
Even my son has two. All the iterations of Southwind are gone and it seems to be forever. We know what happened to Cap Sound.. big fish eats little fish to survive.

Another oldie. But long dead.
The Norwood Park Drum and Bugle Corps was formed in 1928 by William Widmayer, who was their director and first instructor. The corps was a community-based parade corps, located on the northwest side of Chicago. The corps was one of 14 started by Widmayer at the request of local community- 1

Maybe he wants to make a test run to get the lay of the land & make sure the steaks are rare. Or medium? 🤷♂️
I think there's a Longhorn Steak House behind the Embassy.
I said that wrong as I often do. He made the reservation yesterday for July. 😂

Oh, When I was an interim HS Concert band director, I scrapped "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral", in part because it didn't fit the personality of the band, and also because it was Wagner.
Like I said, tough call.

The same tarnish effect also applies to Stan Kenton.
The separation of the deeply flawed artist from their art is a tough call. I think Woody Allen and Polanski are despicable but I have to admit that I still watch their movies. And i didn’t flinch when Crown played Liebestod last year. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20130509-is-wagners-nazi-stigma-fair

With as many corps that have folded over the past 45 years, My guess is that it's possible that the majority of former performers on DCP are in this situation.
Two. Jim has two, also.

Make sure to go to The Chop House for dinner before the show.
Great steaks abd Bloody Marys. We usually saw a couple of the judges who were having a pre show dinner.
Jim made a reservation there. In April hahaha.

Been going every year for 11 years now (well, one of those years was in the Vanderbilt stadium, which honestly I enjoyed a little more, but that's another thing entirely).
As others have said, it's a great venue! Bowl stadium with ample parking and room. Expect a lot of area high schools, lol. Two things to keep in mind: There is ample parking, but be prepared for a bit of a walk, especially if you park on the wrong side. Also, they usually run out of bottled water by the intermission - plan accordingly.
I walk about five miles a day so walking is good with me! I have a smart knee now. 😂 I picked tickets way up top just so I’d have to walk up a lot of steps.
The water thing has me a little worried, though. I think I’ll get there early and buy a few bottles.

Somebody from the Kilties just posted the recap from the VFW Finals in 1970. I had completely forgotten that back in those days, along with the regular captions of GE, brass, percussion, and marching & maneuvering (visual) there were also captions for Inspection and Cadence. Yep, the "good ol days"!
Btw, you younger folk might recognize the top corps: 1. TROOPERS
2. BOSTON
3. CAVIES
Yep. Inspection was always fun. <sarcasm off>

The sleeves of wind breaker's work well to store several beers or other drinks. A sleeve with elastic cuffs does it best.
I just need water but that sounds like a plan.

Yes, I was in that mess with one gate (Gate 3). The next year they opened another gate & it went much smoother but the concessions are still congested. I drank a bottle of water before entering & also took a bottle in my pocket. 😁 @Terri Schehr
Maybe I’ll stuff water bottles in my clothes like the Animal House guys at the Food King.

They didn’t. I stood in line sweating for about 1.5 hours (no kidding) with my wife for two hot dogs and two bottles of water. Thought I was likely to get arrested defending my wife who wasn’t having the line cutting by the kids. I was never so glad to get to my seats. After that, my blood pressure, view, and show were terrific.
Oh no. That’s terrible. They really should at least have water accessible because some of us aren’t as young as we used to be.

Great show and venue. Went last year and only complaint was the concession situation. Blazing hot, hundreds of high school folks cutting line, and hours in line. Avoid the concession stands.
I hope they allow you to bring in your own water because I get dehydrated easily.
