  1. Muncie was so messy crowded in the middle I left my aisle seat and moved to an open area on the 20. Still good view of shows and less of a mess.

crowds are tough for me. DCI crowds especially so. Many nice folks; many rude, jerkish folks.

  2. Didn’t post last night. While watching the premier on Flo, I regretted so much DCP attention while the shows were ongoing. So promised to keep the phone tucked away during Muncie’s live show. Quick opinions:

Phantom was good to watch and hear. Very appreciative crowd. Colts sounded good to my ears, but felt like a lower tier show and execution.

Crossmen, I’m not sure about. Nice sound and show. Why the dramatic change to their look? Any of they’re recent looks, including the Aussies, would fit the show fine.

I am as tired of posting that blue Stars are over-propped as people here are are tired of reading it. It’s junky to my eyes. Fine corps and music and efforts. I just don’t like so much stuff that has little productive value to the performance.

Cavies were improved. I’m a fan and often biased. Love the field without the junk, especially following Blue Stars. Guard seemed off from recent years, but better than the Premier.

Crown stepped onto the field to lots of excitement. Crowd anxious for them. Sounded very good. Guard work made me wonder even more about Cavies. But the show is not my thing. In fact, on the drive back from Muncie this morning I began to realize the Bluecoats and Crown shows are nudging me away from much drum corps. The kids must like it all. Good for them. Many of you dig it. And drum corps needs to adapt to new interests and new fans. That adaptation always means shedding old things. Even old fans.

Fortunately, there are several corps that will keep me satisfied. I will give Crown a chance to grow on me, which may well be what happens.

BSU has changed SO MUCH from my days though it seems. There’s that bell tower (twice built over.  Lol). And I heard they brought down my old dorm complex, The Gulag..I mean LaFollette.

I should have sprung for a ticket and made the trip since I’m in the state. It’s just that dad would want to come and he’d be really taxed at going on 83 by the end of the show and drive back.

Any idea how many students enrolled at Ball State?

In the past at some other venues, they've had a stand still in a gym.  (Not sure about this venue; think it could also be up to the show sponsor in conjunction with DCI.)  But I kind of doubt it with COVID & all of it's many gifts.

Think they did that in Muncie in 2017 or 2018. Storms were so obviously going to hit whatever year it was, I didn't make the drive up.

  5. Just watched the replay on Flo. Very rough stuff. There’s some nicely uncommon movements, though, that don’t rely on props or silly dancing everyone seems obligated to do.

Gotta say the guard seems disappointing that first night out. I’m used to much more exciting stuff. Maybe yet to come? (And did the guard score well? Might just be my amateurish observation.)

I’m really, really hoping Colts can grab 12th this year. My opinion, I think they have something special happening. Whether that produces a finals night spot, we will see.

Colts have a well-run organization, too. Still supporting a cadets group. I’d like to see that rewarded.

Oh that’s a big, stressful job.  Even with a contractor doing the work.  But, I’ll bet it will look great.  The decisions were the hardest thing for me when we built this house.  Right down to towel racks and toilet paper roll holders.  Sweated them all out.  I’m so glad that’s over.

Funny you mention this. Yes, things I never thought about like towel racks and whether the old inserted-in-wall toilet paper holder should stay or covert to just a wall attachment. Plus, sconces pointing up or down?

  8. Hope I am not duplicating anything, but couldn't find a Muncie forum yet. Also hope to be there in person. A complete bathroom renovation is due to be completed by noon Friday. That's what the contractor said, so I should plan on it, right?

Holiday inn express was $350 a night when we stayed there in 2019.  Maybe it is less now.  You had to fill out an application the year before (2018) and give them your credit card number. I wanted to kill Jim just on general principle. $350:a night for a Holiday inn express!?!   We’re staying at the Omni this time.

    That's awful.

I don't think that it was ever relevant. They're all tremendously strong organizations.

I didn’t think it was relevant, though I always know I might be wrong. Some early comments throughout DCP suggesting it would matter.

Hoping to see things live at Muncie.

  11. The Omni is my favorite. Older but classy, and a lot of DCI visitors around. Plus, the bar is open late.

Find hotels via DCI's web site for good rates. The Omni is usually around $280-$300 per night, but $191 through DCI.

Others are good, too. Sheraton, JW Marriot (a Vanguard favorite), Hyatt Regency...all good and about the same price. Super close is a Holiday Inn Express, though it is $189, essentially the same as the Omni.

Nearly everything is within walking distance of LOS and restaurants.

  12. I like Bloos show. First time in last three outings. Cavies a clear 2nd for the show. Boston was good, as expected, but underwhelming. Some over-the-top hype about them prior to tonight. Maybe I’m reacting to that. All three will be fun to watch develop.

Blue Stars, Phantom I liked, too. Not so much Crossmen, except for their colors.
