Wowwwww thanks for telling me about this show. Went and found a video... that is one of the coolest openers I’ve seen. I’d love to see something like that with today’s design capabilities. With the move toward more dance-like colorguards, and the choreography SCV accomplished this year, I fully expect nearly any corps member could pick up more than basic flat work in a season!

I had a dream (the other post reminded me of it haha) of an alternate opening to Crown’s show this year. Instead of having the brass awkwardly dancing around with horns, the entire hornline had flags and were literally sprinting around, mixing all sorts of insanely fast drill with some awesome flag work, all while the tension built with the percussion and electronics. Then they threw the flags away to pick up their horns, and immediately blew everyone’s brain everyone’s brains out with Bruckner. Way better!! At least in my head... haha. But it got me thinking has anyone put the hornline on guard equipment, whether during a solo musical feature or percussion break... it could make some awesome visual moments.

I'm not saying Weber to Cavies is a definite. But I think Weber to Cavies would be a better fit than Weber to Phantom.
Well why not change? The same argument that Will Pitts presented (during the season premier broadcast) for getting rid of the helmets could be applied here. Why did they not use helmets? “Well we asked ourselves ‘what is the purpose of the helmets? Or are they just there for the sake of being there’ “. Obviously they decided that the helmets had no purpose. The same could be said about marching technique. I don’t seriously think that vanguard would gain or lose points by switching techniques, why not Phantom??? Heck, even changing techniques halfway through the show could add points for difficulty for the corps members having to learn and clean two techniques. The gist of it is... why not??

Scrolling through stuff about SCV... there was discussion about whether or not Pete Weber will or will not return to replace Michael Gaines at Vanguard. Gets me thinking, Vanguard’s drill with Weber was awesome!!!! Imagine if Phantom was able to get him on staff! Thoughts? Is this foreseeable or not likely at all?

What was the original intent of I&E? Relatively new drum corps fan here, I just wonder what the reasoning for having the contest is! When so much time is dedicated to the corps’ show, why would an individual want to put even more time into perfecting a solo/ensemble piece? That being said, I have seen videos of Crown’s “Creamsicles” (if you haven’t, look it up!) and that was super fun to watch! But I&E definitely seems like something that wouldn’t be encouraged because of the investment of time and possibility of overplaying. (At least coming from a brass guy, working on a solo after hours of block rehearsal would be very fatiguing.)

I’ve always been curious, what if a corps design team let the mm’s play a larger role in the creation of a show concept? They could do things like have a brainstorming session with campers for possible show concepts/themes, present a number of ideas and vote on it, heck, even have a suggestions box (or email) all season! I feel like this could lead to a design in which the members are more committed to, while the staff is still able to refine it and keep it to a realistic level.

Speaking of closing moments, one of my favorite shots was Phantom’s conductor leading the last chord of City of Light gives me the chills every time I see it. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing more of those types of shots. I think that closeups are awesome for showing the emotions and intensity that can be lost from the high cam.

I don’t know what they’re currently showing for Vanguard, but when they performed here, at the very end of the dance break, one of the mm’s on the side 1 high platform does a fricken backflip!! Just that dance number in general... oh MAN it’s good.
Also, if they were able to get a camera INSIDE one of the cubes, maybe at the beginning when they’re all together in the center, or just set GoPros around the field/in the cubes at certain points, they could feature some unique views. (Also they risk the view of the guard changing equipment...)
Speaking of cameras inside props, getting a audience view from inside BD’s cafe, especially when the soloists are standing on the counter, while absolutely insane, would be stunning.

Heard some rumors that there are big microphone problems again this year regarding the hornline. I didn’t see any mics other than for solos during the tour premier broadcast?! Discuss!!

Sooo report! Just yesterday they began learning drill for part 5. I counted about 9-10 minutes on the field, with just less than a minute having been learned that day. But, sounds amazing!!! I can’t wait to see the show in costiform!
Brass: Oof. Rite of Spring is tough!!! Definitely playing tough music, and they’ll get it down. Intonation-wise, they’re killing it and have no problems there. Balance and blend is good, but they’re kinda dirty rythmically in the hardest parts. Trumpets/mellos have a cool double tonguing feature in the opener that’s pretty sweet, but definitely needs to be worked on. Trombones need to play a bigger part than they are, it doesn’t really feel different other than some small glissandos. However, the loud parts are still loud, and I still melted a little inside every time... :):)
battery/pit: not a percussion guy, but they sound good!!! Particularly the bass drums caught my attention! I love BK’s drumline because they sound so unique!
Guard: I think the color guard may have been using practice silks, the colors seemed too random at times... but IDK. I’m DEFINITELY not a guard guy. Seemed pretty clean though. There’s some cool moments in which they interact with the props. (Won’t spoil those) Also, they brought back the “Eye of Horus” airbladeish weapons from last year.
Overall, I think this show will be a little less “out there” than last year. I think they will have one guardmemeber that is playing the part of the Pharaoh, there was one who was consistently featured. Opener seems to just jump around musically though, not enough phrase connection I think. Then again, it’s Rite of Spring! Looking forward to where this is going!! Much more than last year.

I was able to watch a little bit of brass rehearsal yesterday, and I’m going again tonight for full ensemble. Goooood stuff happening!! I’m definitely liking this vibe more than last year’s show, that was kind of a miss for me musically. Rite of spring is pretttty cool. Still not quite clean, and it’s hard for me to say a placement guess because I’ve only seen a little bit of the show, but I love the music I heard!! Can’t wait to see a run through tonight.

Only thing that is mildly off for me is the antenna-like plumes bending backward. Gives me an alien-insect feel, not a beast. Would have been pretty cool if they tried a double plume, Kinda like a beast’s horns maybe. However, the rest of the uniform is FIRE! Absolutely love the attention to detail, I hope that they release a video explaining their decisions for each part.

Has anyone found any reliable sources listing Blue Knights housing sites? The Ascend Performing Arts website only has show sites, and the calendar has housing through the end of spring training.

Woah. Found the video of the show... wow. So much cleaner compared to last year at this time... and I actually FEEL something. After listening to Turandot this morning, I knew that emotion is what last year was missing, at least the regal and powerful emotion that is signature Phantom Regiment. This music is fantastic, and while I definitely think it’s not going to be anywhere close to medal contention, I’m happy with this show. I’m sad about the loss of the helmets... but I’ll get over it. Music is (mostly) why I really enjoy drum corps.
Also. I found a recording of Amazing Grace from Saturday night. No intonation issues to speak of... now attacks weren’t nessecarily together and the arrangement seemed SLIGHTLY different than what I’ve heard before, but I think the worries are blown WAY out of proportion.
[edit: whelp, DCI pulled the recording of Amazing Grace even?! Dang. Harsh.]

While I don’t know much about Gino, I had the opportunity to march under Dr. T. Andre Feagin (the Brass Co-Caption head at BAC) this year in the US Army All-American Marching Band. This type of playing is JUST the way he taught. Shaping phrases ALWAYS! Ahhh brings back good memories...
