  1. One thing about the Mandarin's - had the opportunity to hear the brass line from field level a couple of weeks ago, and I feel they are significantly better than a year ago, but not sure we're seeing that yet on the score sheet. A more complex show flow this year, so maybe they're a little slower out of the gate as a result. Will be interesting to see how that develops.

  2. Okay couldn't help myself. 5 WC corps competed in this event last year and this. Here is the movement in their scores year over year.

    Blue Devils: -0.45

    Vanguard: +0.65

    Blue Knights: +0.65

    Academy: -2.1

    Mandarins: +2.45

Certainly that does indicate significant movement for the Mandarins relative to the other 4 corps from last year to this, right?  Still a large gap between them and BD, SCV and even BK but maybe they are closing ground somewhat. Although that's only a starting point for the season, and how each corps moves from this point will be the real key.

Side note: Ike Jackson told the squad last weekend that they are "one of the big boys now". Not sure if they're fully there yet, but at least knocking on the door.

  3. Making Trek for this one for first time. Any advice on where to stay? What area? Specific hotels?

Also we grabbed a relatively cheap set of tickets on ticketmaster in Sec 110, row 4 (30 yard line). I know the general drill is higher up, however other options were near very top of Alamodome at center field or towards front of upper level (300's) but around 20 yard line. Given that we want to see all the shows, but our primary goal will be to see our son, do you expect we'll be happy with these seats?

  4. Really proud of the Mandarins. They had a disappointing run yesterday but REALLY cleaned things up tonight.

I've established I'm biased but I think this should be a very close score. Scouts do a great show. It really is quite striking and their music is strong.

I know nothing about scoring, but one thing that surprises me is that the Scouts brass plays very little during that opener. They also play less overall than many of the corps. When they do, they're very strong. Does this volume of playing impact scoring at all? If so, which part of the scorecard is affected?

Wonderful night tonight.  i loved every second of it.

    One mans opinion.

Mandarins were woulds better than Madison.

I agree with this (although not sure about world's better), but I admit to being very biased. I know nothing about the technical side of scoring, so I'm sure I'm missing alot that differentiates the scores in the minds of the judges. However, from a pure "likeability" factor it's hard to see a 2-pt difference in scores. Luckily for all involved, I'm not a judge.

Very impressed by all of the corps who performed. The dedication required just to get here is amazing, and every participant should be proud of themselves.

    Just home from the theater.

Some thoughts:  I don't know if it was the theater's surround sound or the feed but the EQ was WAYYYY off.  Sub-woofers rattled the floor and dominated brasslines, esp. when synth had a heavy role in the bottom end.  It really affected some of the performances.  Like Mandarins for example.  Sound of Silence is one of my favorite ballads this year and it was all but drown out by overblown base.   When interviews were happening, all I could hear was the audience.  In spite of all of that, I had a fabulous time.

The corps that blew me out of my chair was.... the Cadets.  I absolutely fell in love with their show tonight.

Sounded glorious at my theater - Lucas Oil Stadium -  must have been a broadcast issue.
