Is it too much to ask for 2024 to be the year that Bloo Brass is finally good enough to win the Ott?? Please, I'm literally begging. I've wanted to see them win high brass for years now.

Their hornline is criminally underrated, and I know I'm not the first person to say that. While they haven't been the cleanest or most technically proficient on the field, they have had one of the most characteristically unique sounds in the activity for more than a decade at this point. That's what makes Bloo Brass so special, in my opinion.

I recently came back to this video for the first time in a while, and my goodness it's getting me excited for 2024!

I know you didn't mean it in this way, but I'd say Bloo's brass is good enough to win an Ott. They've had a few second place finishes in brass over the past few years, and just earned their highest brass score at finals last year, so they're more than knocking on the door 😀

But in full agreement with you, this group still feels a bit overlooked as a whole by the general consensus. I think this group has some of the most demanding environmental challenges on the field year to year. Still think 2019 might've been their crown jewel in brass so far but they've been close since then. Can't wait to see what they have in store this year!

I’m just astounded my age-out corps made this list at all; usually SCV ‘87 overshadows SCV ‘85. Then again, SCV had a lot of 2nds to choose from back then (82, 85-88). 😶‍🌫️

No bias here! SCV ‘85-‘87 made the list, I chose the top 34 highest scoring second place finishes and those 3 years were within that group. Both SCV ‘86 and 87’ lost in the first round to 89’ PR and 93’ Star of Indiana. Great show by the way!

  5. 16 corps left standing! Bracket is updated and voting link is live in the topic starter or below!

    Some higlights:

    • #1 seed has fallen in the first round
    • 1989 Phantom Regiment had dominate victory, winning 27-1
    • Blue Devils 2011 vs 2016 ended in a tie, settled with a coin flip, 2016 advanced!

We'll see what tomorrow brings us 🙂

Voted! '99 Cavies drill was killer. No one moved like them for a few years after that. The Cavies shows during that time were just on another level with regard to execution. I loved about half of the Cadets from 2007 but even though I didn't mind the narration as much as others it was just too much. The end of that show though is one of my favorite endings.

    Thanks for putting this together!

It sucks being a new(ish) fan of DCI sometimes, as I didn’t get to experience a lot of these shows or witness the impact some of them had on the activity. I like to do my research tho and am aware the beast the Cavies were in the late 90’s and early 00’s. Cadets 07’ is an interesting show to me. Absolutely love the music of the show, didn’t mind the narration until about 70% of the way into the show and even then I could put up with it haha. I really enjoyed Santa Clara 86’ for its time but always a tough battle comparing over a few decades.

Guess that’s the fun of it! Glad you’re enjoying!

  7. Hey all! It's that time of year again! March Madness DCI Edition. There seemed to be a decent amount of people who enjoyed this last year and I did as well, so thought I'd bring it back!

I did some digging through last year's thread for this year's topic and there were a lot of good suggestions, but the theme I decided on this year will be....

The Greatest Shows to Almost Win, a tournament to decide the favorite silver medalist!

The top 34 highest-scoring silver medalists will compete until a winner is crowned. The bottom 4 shows will open the tournament with a play-in round starting this Sunday!

I'm going to switch things up just slightly this year. I found a website that allows you to create your own predictions on the bracket for those who enjoy a little friendly competition. You can cast your predictions and follow along on that bracket as the week progresses. To submit a bracket, it seems you'll have to submit an email, but you can probably provide a fake one. I don't believe it asks you to verify it.

I'll post a google survey link starting on Sunday to vote for each round and will update the bracket accordingly with the results.

Voting for the play-in round will open Sunday (3/10) at 5pm est, and each round will start at the same time each proceeding day. Per usual, don't take it too seriously and let's have a good time!

  8. Not sure the likelyhood of this reaching anyone, but didn’t want to start a new topic for this question, and I thank you for any help in advance!

Okay so to my question, I’ll be attending DCI prelims this year and I’m looking for some advice on which tickets are good. I attended finals in 2017 and was roughly in section 636, which is the nosebleeds around the end zone so the sound wasn’t very good as I’m sure you can guess.

I was seeing if anyone had seats in the 600’s on the 50 and how the good the sound is there. Assuming it’s not terrible since judges are in the press box up there but just curious from anyone who has sat up there or around that area. Thanks again!

Wow, I did not realize that! That’s awesome!

I hope Kevin sticks around. Watching him in the lot with Bloo Brass, you can tell that he has a lot of passion for this corps and this horn line. I think he could really take their brass program really far in the next few years.

Also, I loved seeing Derek Gipson with them during finals week. He’s the one that got them where they are now, and I hope he will continue to be involved for years to come!

Agreed 100%. Kevin has done some great work, not just with Bloo so far but with his time with the cavies. Their 2019 hornline was phenomenal, one of my favorite of the season. And I understand he was on crown’s staff at one point as well. I hope Derek will be with them in any capacity for a long time!

I’d say Bloo will continue to be in good hands 🙂

  10. Not sure if this had been mentioned already in this thread or the previous but Bluecoats achieved their highest brass score ever on finals night! I think I recall asking after seeing their preview show that this brass line could be one of their best ever. I guess I got my answer 😉

I’d only expect them to be stronger in 2024. Truly one of the more underrated brass lines in my opinion. Can’t wait to see what Bloo comes up with this season. Alright back to lurking I go.
