  1. Really looking forward to seeing this one on the field after last night! The corps sounds great, I think the show is a good direction for Phantom musically.
  2. I'd love to see someone play some of Hildegard's music! Origin of Fire could be adapted as a great ballad (although it'd obviously need some changes from the original to make it work on the field)
  3. 4. Hmmm... the last corps that managed to beat BD multiple years in a row also had Michael Gaines designing their drill...
  5. Very true. I think we might start to see them place 3rd occasionally and lose their "winning after losing years" streak that they've maintained since 2007, but they're definitely going to keep winning regularly for a very long time.
  6. That's true, but it's also been forever since they won a total of just 2 caption awards over the course of 3 years - none in 2016, 2 in 2017, and none in 2018. To compare, the last group of three years where they didn't win twice was 2011-2013. They won at least one caption award in all of those years — 1 in 2011, 3 and a tied 4th in 2012, and 1 in 2013. They also haven't won the Zingali in the last three years after winning it every year from 2006-2014.
  7. I don't believe they've posted all of it yet but they did confirm FOEG after one of their weekly videos.
  8. That's fair on 2014, admittedly I haven't seen 1987 so I can't compare it to that.
  9. Apart from Fires, their repertoire this season is very original. And they have successfully repeated pieces in the past (albeit with better overall designs) — Elsa's in 2011, Nessun Dorma in 2012, Swan Lake in 2014, etc.
  10. I disagree — corps are going to use ideas that have been used before. SCV performed a show this past summer about an inability to communicate after Cadets announced (and didn't perform, but I'd assume SCV had at least a framework of the show concept if not more before The Conversation was scrapped) a show about the same thing for the same year... but the design was quite original anyway. Cadets' 2002 show, although inspired by their 1995 show, was an original and distinct design. BD 2012 was another abstract, artsy show just 4 years after Constantly Risking Absurdity, but many people think it's one of the best designs ever. Phantom's show design may not meet that standard, but it won't be because it's a repeated show theme — it'll just be because Phantom's design isn't at an incredibly high level right now.
  11. Les Mis Cadets - 1989, BAC - 2011, SCV - 2013 Regardless of whether it's good or not, it won't be the fact that Pio did a Joan show recently that makes it good or bad.
  12. That's not really a fair statement... did you call out SCV in 2013 for doing a Les Mis show when Cadets and BAC had done it before? What about Cadets the same year for Barber and Bartok when Star had done the same? If the show is designed differently, it's original. I can tell you that this show is definitely going to be VERY different from Pio's Joan of Arc show.
  13. It would behoove them to have a really mooving ballad this year...
  14. Only thing I can find is linear (and other words related to linear). Could be that, or the last word of the title could just be "near".
  15. Let me rephrase, because I didn't explain what I meant very well... each piece in Crown's show was arranged very well on its own, but they didn't fit together at all thematically or musically. The individual pieces in Phantom's show were arranged rather poorly for the most part (at least for brass), but there was a consistency to the style that made it flow and feel like one unified show.
  16. To me Crown's music overall was almost as much of a mess as the visual — everything sounded great on its own of course, but the book as a whole had no cohesion and the shifts between styles were often really jarring. If I Fall was a beautiful ballad, but... did it really belong in Beast? The front ensemble stuff in between the Bruckner and the double tongue feature sounded cool, but did it have any relation to the show? Phantom's music, on the other hand, felt connected throughout the show to me. It wasn't incredible arranging, but for the most part it had a sense of unity.
  17. A positive move, but not a good announcement... it's the same as Oregon Crusaders' announcement regarding Mike Stevens, thanking him for his time at the corps and not mentioning the issue of having a known sex offender on staff.
  18. For me: 2015 2018 2010 2016 2011 2014 2013 2009 2012 2017
  19. Hoping to make it to Indy and/or Allentown for the first time!
  20. Missed them at Allentown but saw them a few days earlier in Chester... I've never seen another performance with that much energy (besides maybe Dudamel conducting CSO)
  21. Just going with the years that I know well, so ignoring 1972-1997 because there are finalist shows from those years that I haven't seen: 1998-SCV 1999-SCV 2000-Cadets 2001-Cadets 2002-BD 2003-BD 2004-BD 2005-Phantom 2006-Phantom 2007-BD 2008-Phantom 2009-BD 2010-Crown 2011-Cadets 2012-Crown 2013-Crown 2014-BD 2015-Crown 2016-Crown 2017-Crown 2018-SCV
