they're well fed, traveled, and cared for infinitely better than generations before have been.  "starving" refers to those who've stated they'll not support the corps in any way until they see a revamp of the board, admin, coordinators...etc.  Turning your back on your family when they're down, to me, means you don't need to be welcomed back only when things are all sunshine and rainbows.  You dont get it both ways.  You can't walk away, and expect your voice to be heard.

I think my point is, yes, there should be one voice for the show design, and if it's not up to par, you change that person and their team.  (except Boerma... his arrangement to me, is what Madison Sounds like)   You take the good with the bad.  The good, they're not folding, and some budget aspects seemed way better than years before.  The bad, the show design isn't placing how we'd like.  One thing is much easier to fix next season than another.  I don't believe anyone in the admin would sit on this years competitive success, and then say "yeah, let's do that again".  But they would say, what do we need to do, as an admin, to provide all the tools necessary to  put a team in place to put the corps at back where they should be, without sacrificing how the members are treated.

You finally admit this show was terrible! You have been one of the head cheer leaders all year long saying that it had potential. Just wait it will get better, Chastising all who said any different. Now you say that the show is crap?? You have been spouting all year now this. what a beauty!

It is almost a bizarre strategy for a big anniversary. If folks in charge wanted the radical change of Heart & Soul, you’d think they might have passed it to next year.

Not sure anyone’s mentioned that we don’t even get that cool Madison DM salute for this 80th.

Because that would look too masculine. They need to beige things up a bit, preparing for that participation ribbon.

Well, you are just as wrong about me as everything else.  I posted my opinion of the show design earlier today (keyword: cringeworthy).  I just have not yet chosen to extend my armchair quarterbacking to demand they fire the staff, fire the admins, fire the BOD... speaking of fire, what happened to my hair?

    What?

    1.  As long as your corps wins, all is well.  If your corps loses, the sky is falling.  Thanks for illustrating my point.

    2.  Among all the hair-on-fire accusations in this protracted thread, the most flammable of them all is nowhere near the depth of the financial hole the 2003-4 admin dug the corps into.

    3.  Was Madison never any good with Scott Boerma arranging?

    4.  What replacement staff do you expect will jump at the chance to work for a corps with such loyal and appreciative supporters as yourself?

    1. Not Wins, entertains and strives for excellence. Loses??? Thanks for,  illustrating my point place or worse is not even in the running for losing.

    2. Financially they are in a huge hole. Is borrowing funds from Alumni to finish tour oK? Does that sound like fiscally sound? What is the current debt right now, How much has been paid down?

    3. Madison was great with Boerma, never said they were not. He had just a big hand in writing the dumpster fire. Did he just throw in and say fine, here is your baby, I only was paid to write it?

    4. I have done plenty for the Scouts. Right now a change is needed badly. By standing by and saying all is good is for fools.  You are probably one of the people and there were many, that said that with a few tweaks and some great work this show would make finals and probably still believe that. That is fine. From day one, I and many other said it would not come close to finals. So put down the koolaid, I have listen to you drum corps experts all year, guess you are not.

Sorry to single you out as the example... but here is what irks me about the tone here.

    1.  First, the elitism.  You are not entitled to competitive success in perpetuity.  A corps BOD cannot "ensure competitive results".  If the mere fact that X number of other corps outscore you is sufficient cause to declare your otherwise constructive program a failure, you failed to learn one of the most important life lessons of drum corps.  Some people here post as if the Madison Scouts would be better off dead than alive if placing below 16th... while the majority of corps programs place below 16th.  Should we tell the majority of the corps performing in the prelims today that they are better off dead?

    2.  Not doing anything?  This is the same corps that spent itself into oblivion circa 2003-4, and has recovered to build not only a financially viable operation, but a good-sized, multi-program arts organization similar to those of other big DCI names.  They have adopted the expanded tour of DCI world class; they are equipped, housed and fed like other WC corps; they have retained and acquired staff of legendary reputation and proven success.

    3.  Of course it is frustrating that this same staff of past proven successes came up with this cringeworthy design.  Then again, I have cringed at 16 of the past 19 Blue Devils offerings.  I have noticed that corps supporters are far more willing to keep their cringing to themselves when the corps is placing as expected or better.

I hope the real "men of Madison", alumni of the corps who must number in the thousands by now, are not accurately represented by the few here who cry because of the present corps ranking.

    1. Elitism, hell yes!! Elite, The Top, The Best, UPPER echelon. I expect my corps to be the top Entertainer competing for a title, or at least striving for it. I want to walk away from a show and say, I gotta see that again!!! not hold my head in disgust, and feel bad for the members who have to perform this joke,

    2. Spent money into oblivion in 2003-2004?? RECOVERED?? Are you insane or just ignorant?  The corps financial problems are worse than ever. Borrowing money to finish tour from an Alum is not financially stable. But you seem to have a good grasp on the books.

    3. This staff has not had any proven success. They acted out a selfish indulgent, to satisfy  their own needs and egos.

4 Wake up! time for a change. Duggan, Boerma, Tomsa, Naherniak, komneck and peterson, this what you do to the so called brotherhood that you claim to be a part of on the 80th year anniversary?? Shame on you for driving a once iconic brand into the ground. As well as the rest of the BOD for letting this abortion see the light of day.

Not sure I want to reply to any of this specifically.  I will just say that if the Madison Scouts were in title contention, it would be interesting to see how much more tolerant you all would be regarding costuming, female performers, "the haaaaaaaat", staff/admin personalities, and whatever other complaints are lodged here.

Well they are not even close to contention or relevancy. The show picked for an 80th anniversary of an iconic Drum and bugle corps is embarrassing.

  7. The season is over. not a good show, not a good concept. Thanks to Taras for bringing in his trophy for his little singing group. Ill conceived at the expense of the Madison Scouts and their brand.  The staff so full of themselves that they are sooo creative. Well Chad, you are not. The other staff that are supposed to be MEN of Madison enabled this fiasco come to life. The administration for letting this folly see the light of day shows that these guys need to bow out. Drum corps is clearly over their head. This is the MADISON SCOUTS !

How many amazing Scout alumni are teaching and running drum corps today at the highest levels?  Why are they not working with Madison? Most of these members will prob go to other corps next year, Brotherhood you say? You don't get better by replacing 75% of your members. Its the returning members that make a corps strong. What is peterson and komneck saying to persuade the members to comeback to Madison. Next year to gain continuity?

On that note, are those two and the board of cronies returning as well? if so, it will be more of the same. But yet people blindly say its ok! we are trying, We are to change this, tweak that??? Those people have been singing that song all year. And chastising anyone who disagreed with any of it. well, It did not happen. It wont happen with this group. Complacency is a warm fuzzy sweater only non achievers and non competitors wear in a competitive activity. Out of the top 12 you are an afterthought, 16th, not even relevant in the drum corps world.

  8. Its AUGUST!! Have not cracked 80, that says the show is not good at all! It also says the corps is not good enough to out perform the show. That all points to management. For its watered down, all inclusive gelding philosophy, which uses solid words and philosophies of tge past and twists the to fit thier ajenda that just ring hollow.

The Scouts basically did this in 2010 to much success. Doing it again in 2019 could be an even bigger success.  As many corps have entered the jumpsuit-spandex,no-hat, here’s my face look, Madison would look pretty darn fresh in the old Scout’s  uni’s and a more traditional show.

If any corps  could get a lot of mileage by returning to their roots, it is Madison. 2019 will be ripe for tradition.

Apparently, staying the course put them in 21st place next year. I love when  the experts kniw so much!

  10. The show is bad, yes. But what of the talent? Yes these guys are working thier tails off and I totally agree! Could SCV members be winning with this Madison show? And conversely, would the Madison members be winning with SCV show? You guys are saying the show is bad, which it is, where would they be with the concencus best show of the year?

  11.  At this point and it is a waste of time energy and money. The corps has changed with the blades of glory costumes,  with uninteresting onr non excitement type of shows. All of this to conform to wgi.  By conforming and being a me too,  all in the name of following the crowd to make the finals show. Evidently that is not working, so why not just go back to the Superman suit with the balls in your face Type of show Madison is known for.  What is the worst that could happen? Not make finals, oh yeah it seems to happen a lot as we play follow the leader with no heart or soul.

The brand that Madison is and has been. The Madison Scouts were what drum and bugle corps embodied! The type of show Madison is known for. The brand that Madison is and has been. The Madison Scouts were  The face of drum corps , what pure unadulterated passion and excitement we’re all about. I do  not think that the Madison Scouts running around without the Aussies So the crowd can see your cute little expressions , running around in the pink and red costumes. I want to see the Madison Scouts marching onto that field blowing that stands down with a scowl on their face saying hair I am, this is bad azz!  Why not be the leader and bring drum Corps back to what it was meant to be. And by that, I mean entertaining.

Todd, you're certainly not looking at the track record of the current regime and Board through the lens of proper business and performance standards.  How much worse does it have to get for you?

Well, komnick and pererson we both at the madigras with the alumni. A whole room full of Alumni, they were asked about the show with no real answers. A captive audience of engaged, Madison Brothers. They chose to not have the balls and get up in front of the Alumni and discuss the upcoming show. Always asking the alumni for money and giving nothing back. Isnt that what every other top tier corps would have done? The costumes are an embarrassment. There is a thread on DP with whi has the worst costumes, its Madison hand down. The show is terrible, the soloist plays 1/8 of the show and runs around like she is lost. Show = Big Fail! Narration , drums and brass ok but the guard is in feb form.

  13. I love all the non Scout guys throwing out their opinions as to what Madisin show be doing. My question is, is it worth raising $1,000,000 to keep in an activity that is mainly a bunch of well to do pretentious young people just padding their resume and typically dont care about the history of the activity. Drum corps has jumped the shark move it to indoors where wgi belongs

  14. This show is a very bad design, Sorry Chad you self indulgent wasting of money the corps does not have, you should be ashamed! All you koolaid drinkers need to wake up. 15th is not the place for Madison. Wonderful, has so much potential, enough!!! You do realize that all the other corps are not gonna stand still. You are slotted. The experiment with the beginning of females is an epic fail

yup. Mirror mirror on the wall, whats really the reason for the fall

It obviously management. Specifically komnick and perterson. The board is just a bunch of yes men. He has surrounded himself with lakies and has taken thus corps down. With out the infusion of Mr Mason a few years ago. This would have crashed sooner. Right now sittinf at 14th could be worse before the end.

    1. You don't know me.

    2. It was not back-peddling. I expressed my opinion. He thoughtfully responded in a courteous way, and gave an explanation that made sense. An explanation that contained something that I hadn't thought about. An explanation from someone who brought a corps from nothing to a world champion to a fan. A fan who has not nearly accomplished as much as James Mason.

    3. I'm the biggest Star homer you would ever meet. Especially Star '89 to '93.

I am sure you are, but had Mr Mason not replied you would have moved on feeling superior, having critiqued his shows and not in a good light. Unable to sustain ......... just what i read

It's just not that easy anymore. The talent level in DCI is higher than it's ever been, and you have to be so consistent, and make consistent improvement each year in order just to make finals and stay there. To stay 14th-11th each year is extremely difficult. You've got Blue Stars who have been perennial finalists for about ten years, Crossmen who over the past five/six years have really established themselves as solidly in the 12th-11th spot and then about four corps, including Academy, Mandarins, Colts and Madison, which REASONABLY can expect to contend for 12th or 11th.

To be in contention to win is a ten-year project. You have to understand where you are in that time frame. You need a solid administration with a vision and a young, smart staff that wants to stay around and build. The models for that are Bluecoats 2004-2016, Crown 2004-13. Boston and Cavies are on that road now. I am also impressed with what I am seeing so far out of Crossmen this year.

Madison is at the VERY BEGINNING of that process. Why, how, doesn't matter now. If Madison's staff/admin is not on the right track to become a consistent finalist corps in the next few years, perhaps the changes need to be made. But ranting about how they should win and contend to win now just because of the name 'Madison Scouts' is unrealistic and simply undercuts credibility. Madison fans, RIGHT NOW, should be hoping for 12th or as a long shot 11th. if they fall out for the next two/three years, it may well be time for a change. But you need to think for the long term.

I am looking forward to seeing Madison tomorrow night. I am sure they will be in the mix in August.

No, i said that should be the goal, to win. First compete with the goal of getting to the top. The current administration is complacent to sit 15-10. But thanks for your verbal vomit

Wow! Thank you for writing such a thoughtful response. I really appreciate it. I never really thought of it like that. It makes a lot of sense - yes, sometimes you do have to go backwards to move forwards. You certainly left us with several Madison shows we can love for a long time.

I really hope you will see this comment because I've always wanted to meet you just to say, in all sincerity, thank you. Thank you for those great shows you gave Star ('89 through '93 are amongst my favorite shows ever). Admittedly, I did not like '93 during that season (I'm sure I'm not alone), but now I consider it the single greatest show ever and it is my absolute favorite. Back then I just liked - rip my face off loud and fast music. I didn't get what you were trying to do.  Years after '93 I saw the show in a whole new light. I learned that drum corps could be brilliant, exciting, innovative, and very musical without having to rip my face off. I heard such an exposed brass line playing to near perfection. I saw a design that worked on every single level - from the uniform colors, to the flags, to the drill, to the music. Just perfection. THAT show, 10 years later when I finally woke up, taught me to look beyond what I know and think beyond what I like, if that makes sense. Not just in drum corps, but with music in general. <- That, as a music lover, was a huge gift. Thank you.

I'm sure you are very proud of what Star accomplished. Taking a group from literally nothing to world champion in 7 years is certainly remarkable, but you left us with a show that is legendary. A show that will be talked about as long as drum corps exists. That is pretty amazing. I honestly listen to the 1990-1993 Star shows more than any other shows (except maybe '87 Vanguard).

I sure do miss Star. All the time. Like many great artists, Star left us far too early, but it also left us with some true masterpieces. It must have be amazing to have been part of that. I always say if I ever met someone that marched '93 Star I would kiss their feet.

I wish you the best in the rest of your life endeavors. Thank you, again, for chiming in.

Nice back peddling. Oh, his shows died, sees response, ohhhh you are so wonderfull! xxxxxxxxxxx
