  1. I think that we can glean that there will be an element of dark in this show, because that is what John Mackey excels at. Dark, intricate melodies. Percussion and low brass are going to have worlds of fun with whatever he writes for them, I can tell you that.

  2. John Mackey is one of my favorite composers so I can't wait to see how that pans out. Color me *very* intrigued for how this summer goes. Mackey is very well known for odd time signatures and very chaotic pieces, very very friendly to low brass.

Me thinks we see some trombone and bass trombone from Crown this season once again.

I thought it was kind of interesting. In 2022 at DCI I won a tour of the tornado center in Norman OK. The director of the center is a DCI fan and is the official DCI meteorologist.  I wasn't able to do it last year but theis year I plan on taking a break from the tour in OK and seeing how they track tornadoes and such

Ahhhhh yesssssss Dr. Kloessel is great! Love that guy, would love to go to a show or two with him.

  4. I was at a storm chasing convention in Fort Worth this weekend (I am a storm chaser and meteorology major) and happened to meet two film score writers from Hollywood that also happen to be prominent storm chasers and we had about a four hour long conversation about film scores and classical music. During that awesome conversation, I was able to introduce them to Crown and they were blown away. The very first show I presented them with was 2012! I also showed them snippets from 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2023.

Two of the husband's favorite pieces are Tristan and Isode and Gabriel's Oboe, so naturally he was very moved by what he saw. I will never forget about that conversation that I had with them.

If you want to go look them up, their names are Bill and Anna Stromburg! They are great composers!

I share your excitement.  Was just listening to some audio and was struck with the sophistication of the arrangements.  There's no one out there doing what they're doing.   Yes there are other excellent drum corps performances out there -- settle down people.  But Klesch's skill at arranging is aging like fine wine and the percussion writing last year was phenomenal.   Kind of scary to think what things could be like in 24.

I completely agree. Klesch is a musical genius and I hope he remains with the program for at least the next two decades. One of the really cool things about him is that he continues to evolve as a writer, he doesn't hold on to tendencies for too long, at least not anymore. This ensemble is really pushing the activity musically even now, and I am here for it. Music is the entire basis of this activity, after all, even over the marching.

The best part is his music almost ALWAYS matches what is happening on the field. I love that.

Crown could play Zippity Doo Dah, Camp Town Races and Turkey in the Straw and make it sound glorious.

There are some absolutely beautiful choral pieces out there that I would die to hear crown put on the field. Miserere Mei, Deus is just one of them. I would love to hear some of the Eric Whitacre choral pieces from crown too.

I want to see a return to campy fun Crown, circa 2007 to 2011, but refined. We need more lighthearted and whimsical shows. Dark and drab is so 2010s. Lol.

See I was going to to the other way around. I want them to double down on the dark shows. Not like beast…or like inferno. I know that war shows are done quite a lot in this activity, but I’d really like to see this design team flesh out a really dark, heavy, and emotional show about war and the human condition. The music they could do coupled with their ensemble sound and amazing knack for *really* pulling the emotion out of music like that could turn into a really, REALLY powerful production. Yes I love campy crown but I really want them to nail a gut wrenching show that pulls at all of the heart strings.

And I don’t want them to put on a gimmicky show about war, I want them to really dig deep into the depth of the human condition and the woes of war. The vast majority of war shows are very gimmicky and don’t take that deep of a dive into the sorrow, fear, and anger felt in such precarious times.

To get an idea of what I mean by really conveying those emotions and understand the kind of direction I mean, check out this song released a little over a year ago by one of the best singers and storytellers on this planet: Dimash Qudaibergen. The song is entitled “The Story of One Sky” and is linked below.

Such a consistent sound from this player and such an amazing tone with almost perfect tuning throughout. I love how intricate this tuba part is. Also love how he is thoroughly displaying the techniques that are taught by Harlof. The biggest thing I noticed (and this was especially evident in the ballad) was the breath out AND in with every staggered breath he took. Without fail. He went to no ends to make sure his tone was always centered and full and he sounded as if he could have kept marching another half hour with no problem. No loss of energy, no loss of tone quality throughout. He mastered the show.

I also noticed how clean the feet were in this headcam because as a contra they are often placed in the back of the ensemble and you get to see everyone in front of them. This corps preaches exclence from the traditional marching and playing perspective. Difficult show performed at the highest level. I love it.

  9. I will add to those requests.

Is it too much to ask for them to have another show with as much simultaneous visual and musical demand as 2012 and 2014? 2012 especially? I want them to push the envelope with simultaneous visual and musical difficulty like they did then. Spread the field. They totally have the chops to do it and even better than they did back then.

Where’s the 2024 thread?  I kinda still wanted to discuss 2023, but it looks like you all have already moved on!

The more I think about it, I believe 2023 might be my favorite Crown corps ever!

It is currently on page 2. will be bumping it momentarily. And I love this show, so I see your perspective here.
