Show Title: Rebirth of Funk
Repertoire: Earth Wind and Fire Medley (September, Getaway, Reasons, Boogie Wonderland, Shining Star)
Fantasy
Birdland
Vision Elite was established in Brooklyn this past November to serve youth in the Tri-State area. The corps is part of the year-round program of the Brooklyn Music and Arts Program.
The inaugural program takes one on an exploration of the origins of funk, including the bebop era that passionately reflected the African-American experience. Though we think of funk today as referring to an aggressive dance music with a heavy groove, its origins were very much rooted in the harsh realities of an earlier era.
Music selections include, “Earth, Wind and Fire Medley,” consisting of “September,” “Getaway,” Reasons,” Boogie Wonderland,” and Shining Star, “ plus the selections “Fantasy” and Quincy Jones’ contemporary arrangement of “Birdland.”
