  1. People are aware that The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive drum and bugle corps. based in Santa Clara, California. But what they don't know is the history of the corps. The corps began on the evening of March 6, 1967, when the parent-boosters of the Sparks Drum & Bugle Corps, unhappy with the corps' artistic direction, voted to shut down the corps and return the unit to being a drum and bell corps with majorettes. After the fatal vote, three dissenting adult staff-supporters met with concerned corps members and asked them if A) they would rather continue as a drum and bugle corps, or B) become a drum and bell corps. When the members resounding chose "A," a new corps was born, and a new booster club was organized on the spot. Gail Royer, who was a music instructor for the Sparks, a local elementary music teacher, and an American Legion music judge was picked as the director for the new corps. The naming of the corps was delayed until the new group's first scheduled rehearsal, a week later. At that time, after discussing several possibilities, the members and staff named their new corps the Santa Clara Vanguard. You can read the full history of The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps at: http://www.dcxmuseum.org/index.cfm?view=corpslist&CorpsID=3 written by Steve Vickers, 2002-03 [Vanguard Music and Performing Arts; A History of Drum & Bugle Corps, Vickers, 2002-03; Drum Corps World, multiple issues; Drum Corps International] A recent post on the VMPA website celebrates WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT: MARY SHIFFER CREATES THE VANGUARD IMAGE March 26, 2021 by Richie Rodriguez. url: https://www.scvanguard.org/womens-history-month-spotlight-mary-shiffer-creates-the-vanguard-image/ This is the story with pictures of Mary & Gail Royer and how SCV adopted their iconic Red Jacket from the previous green & red satin blouse. For two years, beginning in Jan. 1971 through Aug. 1972, Mary selflessly devoted and dedicated herself completely to creating the now iconic look of the Santa Clara Vanguard that we know today. 2. What will corps do at the shows? Jeff Ream has been the most 'Financial" Creditable Hawk in this forum regarding organizations's finances and all organizations have suffered huge losses. Drum Corps International posted: Schedule of 2021 events leading into Indianapolis https://www.dci.org/news/schedule-of-2021-events-leading-into-indianapolis 03-31-2021 12:05 The outline of the article is weak in content factual information. I expect we will see some current music programs. But as others have said like (Poppycock), It's basically a dog and pony show to keep the brand/Name alive. It may be streamed, but the content will probably be a lot of virtual video clips, some new video clips but, basically it's a dog and pony show just to keep DCI alive in a sea of debt and commitments. I stated in a previous post that in my state of California, things are so screwed up that it's near impossible for any group to travel, due to bus companies gone out of business because of COVID. We still have state/counties dictating whether HS sports can resume yet HS cheerleading is restricted. While some are optimistic about a 2021 season, I am not. Too much government interaction/ control. Dr. Anthony Fauci accepted the job as Joe Biden's chief medical adviser and he has continually flip flopped daily as Joe Biden's chief medical advisor regarding COVID precautions, vaccines/ general interaction/ and COVID population control. Additionally, we have government federal/ state/ local wanting to mandate some type of COVID vaccination verification to attend mass events and we have a population that does not trust the government and refuses to get vaccinated. Final Notes: I agree with Poppycock This dog and pony show in Indy may be about supporting the individual groups performing whatever groups can assemble to perform, but it’s more about re-funding DCI. I applaud those organizations who decided to sit this one out. Looking to 2022 as a return to the 'marching arts activity'.
  3. Not disputing what has happened in your state/ county/ or school district but that needs to happen in every state/ county for these groups to even travel between competition/exhibition locations. You have been a 'Financial Hawk' regarding each organization's finances. Are you now saying that contest/promoters or other promoters would take a financial loss just to have a drum corps show? I don't think so. That makes no business sense. Your estimate of 6000 fans concert side at Lucas Oil Stadium could barley begin to cover the costs of the the stadium rental ( power/ security/ medical response teams/ police presence/ aux parking subsidies/ advertising/ tv promo's/ advertising/ and so much more that I cannot even imagine what an Indy budget would cost. We have'nt even included TV rights,/ permits/ transmissions for FLO or some other company to transmit/stream the event. I believe that If DCI management manages to create some type of gathering at "Indy", it will be at a huge cost with limited return and will not be even a 'break even' event. Can DCI continue or will DCI "the organization" be another financial idea "Gone" because of the pandemic? Time will tell, prove me wrong, but I'm not optimistic that a return will happen soon and it is more to likely happen over a following season or more due to the current confusion and current history.
  4. We are in uncharted territory. Until every state/ county/ school district/ school agrees on a COVID return policy, I doubt we will see a return of the activity as we we knew it for quite some time. Professional Sports are trying to make a comeback and they will probably be the best indicators of returning to some form of 'normalcy'. Just my 2 cents.
  5. Let's not get too excited here about the return of "marching arts" and drum corps. I have refrained from posting for months because every topic thread evolved into a COVID discussion and the thread was closed. In my state, California ...... we have approx 58 counties, all dictating different and conflicting covid guidlines, ..... and none of them agree, and now embarking on vaccinating the population. The parents in the San Francisco are currently suing the SF School district, (The largest district in California) just trying to get their children back into the classroom because the teachers won't come to schools to teach. The judge has yet to render a decision. As ridiculous as it sounds, some HS have been allowed to resume practice and compete in football, yet the cheerleaders cannot participate because they are deemed unsafe. This pandemic has hit hard and fear and politics have made the situation worse. Jeff Ream has said many times that much of the activity is dependant on the finances within each organization and he is spot on, but there is much more beyond each organization's control. It's not just a case of the finances of each organization but now whether a state/county will comply or allow various 'school activities'. in California. Currently we have many transportation companies that would have (Provided Bus Transportation) for hire like school choir groups, sports teams, and others who have simply gone out of business because of the shutdown. We are in the midst of a terrible mess, a pandemic threat, over reaching government, fear and more. Professional Sports are trying the recover and they will probably be the best indicator of what events can be attended. Just my 2 cents.

  7. Would be wonderful to have her unbiased reviews to whatever competitive drum corps are still available on youtube as a series of videos. If someone one set up a Go-Fund-Me Page, we could all contribute. 84BDSop already did far more than was expected. I would contribute to such a fund/program.
  8. In my opinion. Woodwinds have no place in the marching arts if we are are debating/discussing "Drum Corps"/ and traditional Drum & Bugle Corps type shows (which have been primarily brass and percussion) but as I eluded to in a previous post, I foresee the forces driving this change have already happened (and the genie cannot be put back into the bottle". In the pursuit of winning, arrangers and design staffs have and will continue to develop show themes which dictate the sound to be scored by the arrangers which could include woodwinds to add to that additional sound dimension. There are those who will argue that this would greatly enhance the ensemble's sound. I know there will be those who will disagree both 'Old School" & 'New". But, we are seeing the transformation of competitive "Drum Corps" as we know it now, progressing yet again to a newer format which will be more musical, more entertaining, and encompassing and probably the basic skeleton of a drum corps show like "Blast" from 2000 or the performances that are performed by, Black Dyke Band - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Dyke_Band or Top Secret Drum Corps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Secret_Drum_Corps Top Secret Drum Corps,a drum corps based in Basel, Switzerland. With 25 drummers and color guard section, the corps became famous for its demanding six-minute routine performed at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2003. It's clear that the current competing units have long been moving towards a more musical, more theatrical type show with props, music, instrumentation, etc. Will the 'Next Generation of Drum Corps Performances' be accepted of rejected?
  9. Seems to be a lot of critique about New Zealand Girl and her reactions to viewing various clips on youtube about 'our activity' drum corps. I think she has done an outstanding job as a "new recruit" introducing her to the exposure of drum corps. Everyone is being far to critical of her and her reviews. What if? every response from her was a response from a member of your family for the first time viewing this activity, would you still feel so critical and the same way? Cut her some slack! We should all be glad that she is interested enough to look at the activity, review performances of corps and spend her time to create a youtube review. You all are being far too critical of her. She has no obligation to do this and waste her time to make all of you feel good!
  10. This is the very same argument that occurred when we moved from 'Old School' drum corps to the 'New'. We have all been the frogs in 'boiling water' while the changes have already taken place around us. It's the evolution of the drum corps activity from what we grew up with, what we learned, what we knew and enjoyed progressing to the "NEW" in the spirit of competition and competition breeds ideas and change in the pursuit "To Win". We already saw what a staged drum corps could do in the musical presentation "BLAST" in 2000. Is it any wonder that we would not see significant changes in the seasons/years ahead. Blue Devils already used a Tuba and violin in last season's BD title. Why not other other instruments? I don't like the transition to other instruments beyond brass and percussion that has evolved, but that train has left the tracks and gone long ago. At least, if it is to be done, I want it to be done well and with class. While I still don't like the changes, the show designers will continue to strive to use all the particular instruments used in a piece of music; in the manner in which a piece is arranged for the instruments to produce the most effective, most realistic sound, and finally, the winning score. I miss that G-F bugle sound going to the Bb trumpet sound, it's not the same and will never be but, the Bb is now and it's what is used to compete now to win. My critique of amplified sound to date is: few corps know how to use it effectively. You have corps with arrangers with little or no experience arranging for the front pit and the the amplification ends up in excess and in the wrong places or just plain overbearing. "The Commandant's Own" The United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps still do a current drum corps show as we recognize it with amplification and they maintain a proper balance to produce what we recognize as the new "Drum Corps" sound. What is required is for the front pit arrangers/show designers to have more music backround in arranging as they add a significant part to the total sound that we hear. And while we're talking about the the performance/show. We have already had a taste of props, smoke, lights, tents with uniform changes, tents with performers appearing and disappearing, movements depicting stories and more. With all that has happened, is it not any wonder that we will see "Drum Corps" evolve to become more like "Musical Stage" acts like the top touring musical acts that are touring internationally and here in the USA. Like it or not, change is ahead and the past will never be.
  11. Here’s how Marching Music’s Major League™ will return to marching music’s greatest stage this summer by Drum Corps International "Offical Annoucement" Bringing dozens of ensembles involving thousands of performers and a massive, dynamic summer tour back to life after a forced hiatus of more than a year is no easy feat; but more than 20 Drum Corps International-affiliated groups from across the country are enthusiastically planning to take the field this summer—if positive public health trends continue and professional advisors and consultants confirm all necessary guidance that it is safe to do so. “The easiest thing for us to do would be to stay dormant and cancel all summer activities again this year,” said Dan Acheson, DCI CEO. “We’ve instead opted to explore avenues for safely restarting and have invested wisely in gathering comprehensive information and creating a detailed action plan for a safe return. We now have such a plan in place, which will continue to evolve as the environment warrants. We are enthusiastic about the prospects of providing outstanding – and safe – opportunities to our performing groups in the summer of 2021 and to all those who will take the field in their ranks, as well as those in supporting roles.” Since the start of the pandemic, DCI has paid close attention to the numerous public health and safety issues which would affect participating ensembles, their members, and the organization itself. “As we continue to proceed with cautious optimism about the current trajectory of statistical trends relating to effective treatment and prevention of the COVID-19 virus, we have turned our attention and focused all of our resources to provide a safe environment for reengaging the remarkable performers, instructors and support teams who desire to be a part of the Drum Corps International experience this season,” said Acheson. Acheson continued, “We owe it to these young adults to provide them with every opportunity to thrive in the pursuit of their personal best, with newly adopted policies and procedures designed to ensure their safety without compromise. Although we realize that the situation is constantly changing and there is a risk that a severe downturn could require us to abandon our 2021 plans, we are moving forward with the confidence that a team of extraordinarily talented and highly qualified professionals are guiding the decision-making process to minimize exposure to risk and to maximize every opportunity for success. We are looking forward to once again creating the greatest stage in marching music, and to doing that this summer!” Here’s how DCI will help participating organizations to safely navigate the return to a fulfilling—albeit abbreviated—summer of outstanding educational and performance opportunities: TRTF Calls the Shots Last fall, the Drum Corps International board of directors empanelled the “Tour Restart Task Force” (TRTF) to provide ongoing research and guidance for the safe return to performance activities. A multi-disciplinary team of highly qualified medical, legal and public health experts along with other healthcare, logistics, risk management and administration professionals, the TRTF has published a continually-updated set of recommendations based on the latest available scientific data and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. The focus of the TRTF is to assist participating organizations in the planning and execution of their respective pandemic protocols, keeping safety at the forefront of a successful return to rehearsal and performance activities later this year. Beyond all else, the mandate is to keep members, staff, employees, and volunteers healthy and safe and to avoid the risk of inadvertently creating adverse outcomes. One of the first tasks of the TRTF was to create a set of “minimal viable conditions” which would be acceptable for an in-person restart, based on a number of factors including infection and hospitalization trends, new case trends in event locations, access to affordable and readily-available testing, interstate and intrastate quarantine orders, vaccine access, rollout and efficacy, sanitation/disinfection, group size restrictions and other public health requirements and best practices. The policies and recommendations continue to be updated as the best available science evolves and the pandemic dictates. Since establishing the minimal viable conditions, the task force continues to refine definitions and clarify specific approaches to vaccination requirements, testing options and contact tracing protocols within the unique requirements of drum corps’ standard operating procedures. Considerations include vehicle seat assignments, housing and sleeping arrangements whether in a hotel room or in a school gym or other large area, and other characteristics unique to life within the ranks of a touring drum corps. Corps Safety Managers – Defining a New Role New for 2021 will be a corps-designated Safety Manager for each participating organization, who will serve as the primary point of contact on all matters of health and safety between the corps and the DCI headquarters during the various phases of the abbreviated summer season. This will include the period of preparation prior to arrival for training camps, as well as during those weeks of rehearsal, on into the tour and post-tour activities. These officers will also oversee the successful implementation of their multi-tiered, corps-specific plans. Guidelines include guidance on self-sequestration prior to departing for “move-in” day, as well as pre-travel testing requirements, considerations while traveling to a corps location, potential need for quarantining when staying with the corps during training camp, testing during and after encampment and input on day-to-day lifestyle and hygienic functions such as showering, food preparation, nutrition and meal service. “Bubble” Life on the Road – Highlights of a Different Look for 2021 Although the scope of travel for participating groups will be considerably less than the standard 10,000 mile adventure of previous summers, the need to pay attention to fine-line details are arguably at an all-time high. DCI officials know that the drum corps touring lifestyle doesn’t necessarily lend itself well to the simple creation of a true ‘bubble’ as we’ve come to know the phrase from other sequestered environments. Although the corps will spend the first portion of the summer in a relatively stable and controlled environment, the days leading up to their arrival in Indianapolis pose unique challenges. Their goal is to thoroughly address potential vulnerabilities and provide guidance and resources to assist the corps with the successful planning and execution of procedures to effectively mitigate these challenges. Special attention will be paid to local and regional differences in mandated guidelines and regulations. Cooperation and situational awareness will be key components to a safe and successful summer. – Training sessions for tour policies and procedures will commence this spring so that each corps can manage their teams and address questions and concerns prior to arriving at their training camp locations. – Testing protocols for corps performers, instructional staff and support personnel will be implemented to ensure that everyone participating in and traveling with the corps is provided with weekly Rapid Antigen COVID-19 tests during the training period and for the duration of the tour. DCI has secured the thousands of tests necessary to perform this function at a per-test price that is very manageable for the participating ensembles. – Masks will be a way of life. – Corps will be strongly encouraged to recruit volunteers and support staff who can serve for the entire duration of the season, reducing the risk of having someone bringing an illness into the group. – Bus travel is the backbone of the drum corps touring model. Corps are working with motorcoach operators to ensure that sanitation, cleaning and sanitization of the vehicles meets or surpasses the CDC and American Bus Association (ABA) industry guidelines. – Additional operational guidelines have been created for truck operators, food and grocery pickup drivers, potential rideshare situations, as well as staff and performers utilizing air, rail and ground transportation. “Quarantine vehicles” will be established as necessary within a corps caravan. – The longtime tradition of sleeping in school gyms and simply heading outside to the practice field will be different and in some cases will be replaced in part this year by a shift to more use of hotel and dorm rooms and other creative solutions which meet health and safety guidelines. In many circumstances, rehearsal facilities may not be adjacent to lodging. Each circumstance will be supported by separate guidelines covering specific operational areas such as setup, distancing, sanitation and hygiene. – Laundry facilities will be screened and reserved in advance in order to ensure compliance. Special arrangements will be made whenever possible to minimize contact between corps personnel and members of the general public. – Full corps trips to big box stores will be minimized. Individual corps will create plans for acquisition of essential supplies to minimize exposure to risk. Corps personnel will be required to remain on-property while at housing sites and show sites and will not have the opportunity to depart or participate in other activities. – Post-performance interaction with family, friends and other performers will not be possible for this summer. Performers and staff will not reenter the stadium after performances. Family members, fans, alumni and sponsors will not be permitted in “backstage” areas. This includes parking lots, warm-up zones, corps entry/exit gates and tunnels. – Pre- and Post-performance “huddles” will be eliminated, and will be replaced by socially-distanced corps meetings when necessary. – Additional time will be budgeted for logistics before, during and after rehearsal and performance sessions. – Food service operations will also increase sensitivity to interpersonal interaction beyond the traveling group. Whenever possible, delivery services and curbside pickup will be utilized and strict PPE and washing/sanitizing procedures will be required. – Enhanced handwashing options will be incorporated into mealtime routines and schedules adjusted accordingly. Hand sanitizer will be provided in addition to required hand washing. – Management of touring drum corps food service staples such as the ubiquitous “PBJ Station” and “Drink Stations” will be reimagined, as the self-serving of food and beverages will not be permitted. Social distancing and use of masks will be enforced while waiting in line during mealtimes. Group jug washing stations will be replaced by individual sanitizing kits and procedures which will be explained to members by their respective corps safety teams. \"This list shows just a few of the elements which demonstrate that the unique 2021 season will undoubtedly be filled with challenges, but also with opportunities,” Acheson said. “The later start to the 2021 performance season will certainly help us to ramp up to an exciting summer over a period of months, ensuring that our relentless focus on safety is guiding every aspect of the restart plan. – Audience members will also be a part of the safety plan. As the summer performance schedule draws nearer, ticket holders will receive the most up-to-date information and guidelines as determined by local, state and federal agencies, as well as individual stadium requirements. Acheson continued, “We’re looking forward to a memorable and extraordinary summer for all the right reasons, and we have every expectation that everyone involved will do their part to help Marching Music’s Major League™ to restart with renewed enthusiasm this summer… along with an eye toward the exciting lead up to our 50th Anniversary season next year.” My Analysis: It appears that DCI, (The Governing Body) is following the direction of the individual drum corps organizations and their specific county/state requirements regarding when acitivites can resume and will only make official announcements as they are able due to the individual states COVID restrictions and timelines as that is the way it shoud be. Until COVID is past, every state/county will be different in it's regulations to open up. In California, we are experiencing a dilemma because the governor tried to install Blue Shield (A Health Organization) as the scheduling vaccine coorindinator and all the the county's fought back wanting to retain they own way of scheduling. California is slowly opening up now but has a long way to go. Jeff Ream has best commented on the cost's associated with producing a drum corps on the field in competition. Aside from trying to find any type of housing at schools for travel for the various Drum Corps, In Califorinia the Teachers Unions in California are still bickering about whether to teach students in classrooms in or do Virtual teaching, or a mix in California so a sizable chunk of housing which was previously contracted and used is still unavailabile. Lastly, nothing has ever been mentioned before about Bus Transportation. A number of transportation companies in California have gone out of business, never to return. The few that remain don't have drivers on payroll so there is limited means for any of the California drum corps to get around even within the state for any type of regional competitions. We just have to wait further for the activity to open up but it's looking like a 2022 full competition schedule.
  12. Checking In From The West Coast Analyzing the Latest News From VMAPA, SCV has no official announcements regarding 2021 beyond "more" fundraising activites, Introducing the 2021 Vanguard Hall of Fame Class, Ticket’s for Vanguard’s Virtual Birthday Dinner now available!, Executive Team 2020 Year-End Letter, VMAPA Announces 2021 Board of Directors Leadership, and various virtual clips. Further, VMAPA has adopted a "political position" in the current political climate which I personally do not like. The activity Drum Corps's evolved from an era of patriotism by The American Legion and The Veterans of Foreign Wars along with various Church sponsorships. I do not like that 501C3 youth sponsor ships have to interject or be part of the "Me Too" movement and become political. They should just remain "neutral" and stay out of politics and do what they do best; prorvide programs for youth.
  13. Jurassic Lancer just posted a compaison Let’s see ... $1750 for Switzerland or $3500+ for Indianapolis ... 🤔 A 3 week trip to Switzerland for $1750 vs $3500 + for Indianapolis plus a 2022 contract spot for 2022. What a Deal! It's sad for the regular age outs that would have been in line for a spot but hey, Covid has changed everything for everybody.
  14. Checking in from the West coast. Analyzing Blue Devils announcement of travel to Basel, Switzerland, I am unable to find a links to rules regarding performances. Clips have been posted on youtube of prior performances, and it appears the groups do perform some kind of program and drill but on a much smaller field of presentation that we are accustom to in DCI competitions.. Blue Devils certainly have decades of music charts to pick from but, I'm going to guess they will test some program ideas and new music looking foreward to the 2022 competition season. You can read about the Basel, Switzerland music event was started from the founding: About Top Secret Drum Corps which is a drum corps based in Basel, Switzerland. http://3rcf.org/occupy-in-bpwtpi/top-secret-drum-corps-members-02e267 And the following link offers some description about the Basel Music Festival: Basel Tattoo: What you need to know about Switzerland’s biggest military music festival. https://www.thelocal.ch/20190712/basel-tattoo-what-you-need-to-know-about-switzerlands-biggest-military-festival/ Facts from Article Extract: More than 60,000 tickets were sold to the 2019 show. What happens during the Tattoo? The daily two-hour show includes around 1,000 participants from all over the world. This year’s event features the Hellenic Navy Band from Greece, dancers and acrobats from China, a police motorcycle acrobatic troupe from Germany and a Dutch orchestra. And of course, given its Scottish links, spectators will also enjoy music from ‘bagrock’ band the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, the International Highland Dancers and The Massed Pipes and Drums, a marching band formed of 200 players from around the world, an annual highlight of the show. Add to that an appearance from America’s Got Talent contestant Johnny Manuel and you can’t say Basel Tattoo doesn’t offer something for everyone. What else goes on? Each year the Tattoo also stages a parade through the streets of Basel, featuring the international marching bands who are part of The Massed Pipes and Drums, along with other groups. For the kids, the performers, this is a trip of a lifetime to perform in a music venue and I am so glad that these performers get this rare opportunity not only to perform but to perform abroad. Checking https://bluedevils.org/programs/international-corps/ The BD International Corps (BDI) is a seperate and distinct extension of the Blue Devils organization The BD International Corps (BDI) is made up of recent performers of the world champion Blue Devils as well as other world class corps throughout the United States. The show, designed by the same design team that creates productions for the world champion Blue Devils, is a 7-minute feature specifically designed to showcase the amazing performers talent and bring to life the uniqueness of American drum corps. The corps also performs a variety of iconic BD music as well as other unique productions. Where: Countries include Germany, France, Italy, and The Netherlands. The exact itinerary is still being decided, but will include a performance at the 2020 Basel Tattoo with tentative free days in Paris, Amsterdam, Florence, and Basel. Who: Approximately 100 performers made up up of Brass, Battery Percussion, Front Ensemble, and Guard – ages 18–30. It appears that the unit that will perform in 2021 and prep for the 2022 competion season are members not from (BDI) but the unit that will field a 2022 competing DCI corps.
  15. Checking in from the West coast. Checked VMAPA regarding the Santa Clara Vanguard 2021 Season and found this article from December 2020 by Michael Gaines (Interim Director of Program Operations for Santa Clara Vanguard posted December 3, 2020) VMAPA & BDPA: THE FUTURE STARTS NOW – OUR ROADMAP TO 2022 December 3, 2020 by Michael Gaines "For more than 60 years, Blue Devils Performing Arts (BDPA) and Vanguard Music and Performing Arts (VMAPA) have lived by one mission: to enrich lives by providing opportunities for excellence in the performing arts. As we face critical decisions through this global pandemic, this North star has guided both organizations well and has provided us a clear and future-focused vision for the next 18 months. During this time, our first priority will and has always been to keep our members, staff, and community healthy and safe. Expectations for those participating in a world class organization is the ‘grand experience’ that participants at both BDPA and VMAPA have been able to count on. Although this experience will be different in 2021, we are committed to keeping that promise. In order to deliver this experience, we must prioritize and focus our attention on four key areas of our organizations’ roadmaps for the next 18 months: Building a fiscally responsible future Providing opportunities in the Spring and Summer of 2021 to participate in our organizations Addressing gaps in education of the pageantry arts during the pandemic at a national level Shaping the path to an unsurpassed 2022 Drum Corps season that meets and exceeds the expectations of our community We are emboldened by the talent we see amongst students in our current and prospective membership and are confident in the roadmap our organizations have built. For this upcoming 2021, with the current state of the pandemic, combined with the distance and limited performance opportunities that DCI has planned to date, BDPA and VMAPA have jointly decided not to travel to Indianapolis for the showcase events on August 12-14, 2021. Although we will not be in Indianapolis, both organizations will still plan exciting talent development and educational opportunities for Summer 2021. Our intention is to use next year to help us bring the highest caliber programs to the field in Indianapolis in 2022 – DCI’s 50th anniversary season. To that end, planning for 2022 has already begun. Look for further information on auditions coming soon! “With 2021 not being a normal Drum Corps season, each participating corps has the burden and responsibility to set the best course of action for their organization to achieve the long-term success of fulfilling their mission,” said Drum Corps International CEO Dan Acheson. “We appreciate The Blue Devils’ and Santa Clara Vanguard’s commitment to this activity and support the plans they have made for their organizations this coming year. We all anxiously anticipate the return of the 2022 drum corps season with these two world class corps competing at the highest level during our 50th anniversary season.” Next year, BDPA and VMAPA are focused on recovery. We believe it is fundamental for us to begin that work by developing and strengthening our future members and supporting music programs around the country to build a strong future together. We are committed to supporting performing arts education nationwide both virtually and with in-person events to positively impact as many students and programs as possible during this time, while exploring all accessible performance opportunities for our membership." No official announcements have been posted regarding season 2021 activites for SCV beyond various virtual videos and more fundraising campaigns.
  16. Checking in from the West coast. Opened my email and received the following email from BDPA regarding the Blue Devils 2021 Season. Join the Blue Devils this summer as we travel to Basel, Switzerland for an unforgettable trip of a lifetime! We're honored and excited to have been invited to perform at the 15th Anniversary of the Basel Tattoo, and we still have open spots available in our membership. You definitely don't want to miss this chance to be a Blue Devil and travel internationally to perform on one of the world's largest stages! Oh, and the best part is... you'll only pay $1,750 for the entire experience! That's right. 3 weeks, all-inclusive, and a final show-stopping production for less than what a normal season of drum corps would cost. Plus – if you audition now, you'll also be considered for membership with The Blue Devils in 2022 as we return to the field for competition. That's 2 amazing experiences included in one audition! Of course we will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and work within international travel guidelines to ensure this trip is possible. But in the meantime, we still have open spots available. Don't miss your opportunity! Submit a Blue Devils audition video by our May 3 deadline to be considered for membership. CLICK HERE TO JOIN US IN BASEL, SWITZERLAND!
  17. IMO the "Jury is Still Out" on this one. I have researched the alleged post by Kathy Ho (Drum Major) on Reddit, videos on Innovative Percussion regarding Ike Johnson as well as his history and starting as a performer in the Blue Devils leading to his position as a percussion instructor for many various organizations. I do not condone mis-behavior by any educator/instructor, and I would expect and demand any instructor who works with younger age students to conduct themselves as a "Professional" at all times. It seems that at times, Ike Johnson may have over-stepped this line. It's a human condition of trying to be better than you were yesterday - and teaching that to others in a positive way is a developed skill. As an educator or instructor it's imperative to do this with skill and finesse which is the mark of highly demanded teacher/instructor.
  18. I predict, there will be a 2021 season however, it will be unlike anything we are accustomed to DEFINITIONS to think/start to think that something is normal or natural because you have experienced it regularly over a period of time As a First Responder, I have seen how my county has adapted their county facilities to deal with COVID and how they have set up temporary tents outside their buildings to do limited COVID testing by appointment. Access to stadiums/crowd protection/spacing/ and housing at school facilities is the key for any of the Band/Drum Corps organizations to travel beyond an 8 hour drive. Drum Corps activity will resume as soon as states/counties/schools resume operation and figure out how to protect large groups of people massed together in their facilities and stadiums. Currently this is largely a political decision rather than medical decision, which seems to change daily. We just have to wait. For eastern based organizations, it is easier for them to do day trips to perform at competitions on a limited basis within an 8 hour drive. For mid-western organizations, the same applies to a lesser degree. For western organizations, they must travel long distances outside California, Oregon, Washington to compete because groups are largely located far apart and there are few regional events. It is imperative for these groups to travel. It's ironic, the current COVID situation almost recreates some of the hurdles that western organizations had to overcome to compete nationwide. Going back to Troopers '65 & Vanguards '67 through '72. This when the western organizations began to learn how to travel. We have currently seen virtual performances of orchestras, bands, and other performers streamed 'LIVE' and perhaps, this may be a format for competitions, which could be judged for content, general effect, and visual effect without a present audience through advanced sound technology and video technology. This would require membership voting by DCI and the membership organizations to institute. As a former performer, instructor, and now fan, we just have to sit this season out till all the bugs get worked out and/or a virus vaccine is developed to allow masses of people into stadiums and schools. Even the 2021 season may not be back to our former "normal" resemblance of the activity. It will be a long ordeal to bring the activity back to where it once was. Organizations still alive will make financial cutbacks to the shows that are produced, there will be less venue's to compete, and we may see a reduction in the size of the competing units without the huge audiences in the stadiums we once knew. Recently, news reported that some schools were discontinuing their band programs on the basis of students contracting COVID simply by breathing infection from the breath residue in a wind instrument, This is yet to be determined. Whatever the outcome, the activity will persevere as it has since it's inception and through the century.
  19. Sorry for not participating in forum topics till now, have been in COVID lockdown and working many crazy hours since I am considered a first responsder but, I have followed topic discussions. This is a warning regarding FloMarching! If you have used a credit card or multiple credit cards to purchase FloMarching subscriptions, be forewarned; FloMarching is charging a subscription to every credit card number they have in their database. I used my Discover card for FloMarching 2 years ago and First Bank for the 2019 season. I have not authorized a 2020 subscription yet FloMarching charged both of my cards which are on file. I am disputing both to my banks as fraud. You need to check your cc statements and take appropriate action as this SCUM outfit is attempting to collect any monies they can due to the shut down and season cancellation. Stay safe, and hope all continue to be well.

  22. Just a suggestion. I have found various audio recordings of corps doing a search on soundcloud.
  23. The 1990 Contest Season See the article entitled "Drum Corps Midwest celebrates 25 years" by Drum Corps International Dated 07-08-2002 https://www.dci.org/news/drum-corps-midwest-celebrates-25-years See the article entitled "Drum and bugle corps (classic)" From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_and_bugle_corps_(classic) Some corps managers, directors and instructors walked out of the 1969 VFW national rules committee meeting after their requests for major rules changes were not approved, and some of the protesting participants then formed the by-invitation-only (and short-lived) Midwest Combine in 1971 also called Drum Corps Midwest. Drum Corps Midwest was formed as part of a Drum Corps International plan to split North America into six geographical regions (Midwest (DCM), East (DCE), Canada (DCCan), Great Plains (DCGP), West (DCW) and South (DCS). The six geographical regions later evolved into one governing body known as Drum Corps International (DCI).
