  1. ‘The Shows Must Go On’ YouTube Channel Will Give You Free Andrew Lloyd Webber Musicals Posted on Monday, April 6th, 2020 by Chris Evangelista https://www.slashfilm.com/the-shows-must-go-on/ If you're missing some fine musical entertainment, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Universal Studio's have teamed up to air some of Mr. Webber's musicals for "FREE". Are you missing seeing musicals on the big stage? Well, here’s the next best thing: a YouTube Channel. Okay, look, watching something on YouTube isn’t going to really compare to the theatre experience, but we all have to make do with what we have. In an attempt to bring a West End and Broadway experience to viewers, here comes The Shows Must Go On YouTube Channel, which features free productions of some of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. We can only hope this is all building towards Cats. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Official Announcement | The Shows Must Go On - Stay Home 1,197,454 views•Apr 2, 2020 Youtube Channel: The Shows Must Go On! Above you can find a very casual looking Andrew Lloyd Webber introducing The Shows Must Go On YouTube Channel, which hopes to provide “theatre lovers with a West End and Broadway experience in their own homes, online for free.” Each show drops weekly at 11:00 A.M. PST/2:oo P.M. EST for a limited 48-hour period online – no charge or sign up required – giving fans of musical theatre an opportunity to enjoy beloved shows, from their living rooms. So you better watch them when posted because they will not be repeated when they expire. Future productions will be announced soon. Webber has a ton of hits to choose from: Phantom of the Opera, Evita, and of course, Cats, just to name a few. In addition to the full-length shows, there will also be “clips of famous performances and behind-the-scenes footage will be uploaded regularly to the channel, so fans can continue to get their theatre fix at home.” And while this is all free, you could also make a charitable donation to the organizations listed on the channel, which include Acting for Others, Broadway Cares and Actors Benevolent Fund. It would be a nice thing to do! If you can afford it. Last Friday April 3, 2020, aired the 2000 adaptation of Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, starring Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough, and Joan Collins. Next up this Friday, April 10, 2020 Jesus Christ Superstar, the arena production featuring Tim Minchin, Melanie C, and Chris Moyles will air. 5. I can attest to this. the junior corps I marched with had very similar jackets to 1972 Anaheim Kingsmen only ours were red. They were a "West Point" style uniform modeled after the United States Military Academy West Point uniforms and were constructed out of ripcord type fabric which is extremely hot to wear because it did not breath well. Most of our shows were always in the central valley of California which is extremely hot. Even VFW Nationals in Seattle Washington was a bear. Inspection was done next to the large fountain at the World's Fair and it seemed like inspection took forever. Thankfully, the competition was in the cool of the evening. Marching in DCA, my uniform was the Bolero type blouse which was much cooler to perform in.
  6. A Comparison; The Representation of Male and Female Musicians You are correct but you miss the point of these posts. In no way were women being disparaged for their roles in playing an instrument previously considered as "male dominated". They are being honored for their contribution to music which is worthy of respect and admiration. Women who have previously participated in "drum corps" have gone on to successful careers in music but the number is still small for those who have gone on to be a successful brass or drumming instrument performers. Consider the following: Santa Clara Vanguard on Twitter: Eliana Yamouni "I'm here to be a snare, not a girl snare drummer." "While the numbers of female drummers are still low, these modern women drummers and their forerunners like Karen Carpenter of The Carpenters or Moe Tucker of Velvet Underground are making their own way and inspiring others to pick up the beat." "According to different Native cultural legends, while the drum may have been an innately female instrument, women handed it over to the men in their tribes as a way to help the men connect with earth, much in the same way the women felt connected. With the influence of outside cultures, it became easier for these tribes to adopt the same practices of male dominance, even in drumming, and today, many Native cultures still keep drumming as a male-only spiritual and celebratory practice. However, with the popularity of drumming on the rise, the number of women who are participating in drumming or drum circles outside of cultural boundaries is also rising, recreating this important connection between drums, spirituality and femininity and bringing an equal perception to the role of women as drummers." _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Orchestrated Sex: The Representation of Male and Female Musicians in World-Class Symphony Orchestras https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.01760/full#tab1 Original Research ARTICLE Front. Psychol., 16 August 2019 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.01760 This study examines the representation of male and female musicians in world-class symphony orchestras. Personnel of 40 orchestras of three regions, the UK, Europe, and the USA, and distributions of men and women across the four orchestral departments, strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion, are compared. Data Collection Orchestral Membership Modern symphony orchestras list an average of 100–120 musicians; though regional orchestras tend to be smaller than those based in major or capital cities. Overall, across all instruments, a significant majority of the musicians of the orchestras reviewed were male (56.7%, p < 0.0001), but there were highly significant regional differences in male-female proportions. In the following sections, we present an objective analysis of the current representation of male and female musicians holding tenured positions in orchestras across the world, and the instruments on which they perform. Violin: women were numerically predominant in the violin sections (p < 0.000), but assignments of men and women to 1st and 2nd violin positions were not significantly different (χ2 = 0.73, not sig.). Flute: A majority of flautists were female (57.04%, p < 0.021). Almost all harpists were female (p < 0.0000). A number of orchestras do not list contracted harpists, engaging players whenever repertoire necessitates. Males predominated in all brass sections (p < 0.0001). Where women were present, they were typically found among French horns. In two orchestras, principals in the trombone section were women. In one orchestra, the principal tuba was a woman. No tympanists were female, and only 12.5% (p < 0.0001) of other percussionists were female. Principal Chairs Across the 40 orchestras reviewed, 83.2% of persons occupying Principal chairs were male, and 16.8% were women; 64.82% Length of Engagement Men typically serve more years than women (mean duration for men of 19.3 years compared with 16.65 years for women, differences significant t = 6.26, df = 9, p < 0.0001). Women’s Presence in Orchestras in Relation to General Labor Market See Table 3. Order of sex typing of orchestral instruments based on proportions of girls and boys receiving instrumental tuition on each instrument (ordered from data of Hallam et al., 2008). Relation of Pre-conservatoire Students in Tuition to Representation of Sexes in Orchestras See Figure 5. Growth trends in women’s orchestral membership during the period of 1970–2015 compared with growth trends in women’s presence in the overall workforce. See Figure 6. Percentages of girls and boys receiving tuition on each orchestral instrument. Instrument Choice A prominent feature of young students’ choice of instruments that has received considerable attention is the characteristic preference by girls for higher-pitched, smaller and lighter instruments, and boys for lower-pitched, larger, and heavier instruments (Hallam et al., 2008; De Vous, 2011), and this phenomenon is sharply evidenced in Figure 6. Review, Commentary, and Questions for Further Research The comparative representation of men and women in professional orchestras is an issue of considerable complexity in which many disparate variables intersect. On prima facie evidence, our review of 40 world-class orchestras shows that overall male musicians have a greater numerical presence, significantly outnumbering females by a ratio of 60% males: 40% females. Regional Differences in Sex Representation Adjustments to the overall balance of sexes in orchestras can therefore only take effect over a relatively extended period of time.
  7. I remember the woman snare player from SCV 2018. I am wondering about the weight of the instruments and the current movements while marching. It must be very hard for them to play and march There is a 4 page thread entitled "Girl in Blue Devils Snareline" By Triple Forte, July 12, 2011 in DCI World Class Corps Discussions https://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php?/topic/146971-girl-in-blue-devils-snareline/#comments tja273 Posted July 13, 2011 Kelly and Carla were in the snare line in the 80's, but the first appears to be Bobbi DelCastello in 1975 (based on the BD rosters and an old forum topic at the BD website). Her profile says snare in 1974 and 1975, though another post (apparently by Kelly Houpt, based on the info she gives) said she marched "trios" in '74 and snare in '75. 18. I Agree. It's kind of a Love/Hate relationship with BD. On one hand, they do everything consistantly better than every other corps, on the other hand, I do get tired of constantly seeing them in 1st. I said in another post Blue Devils and Santa Clara are like Brother/Sister corps because they do everything similar, they share expenses and staff to sponsor DCI West, and they attend each other's functions, BBQ's, etc. I like Santa Clara and before SCV started do the "weird" stuff I actually like their music shows better. Their brass has always had that choir like sound going back to when Gail Royer was at the helm. As I said Blue Devils are consistent and I characterize Santa Clara as inconsistent and that would explain why in DCI's history, Santa Clara been a solid fourth place.
  19. In the blog post by Steve Riley, he states that he is a California Licensed Attorney, Show Choir Arranger and Former Combo Drummer. He also states "Disclaimer: This article is an opinion piece. License Status: Active. Address: Riley & Associates, 2608 Victor Ave Ste C, Redding, CA 96002-1447. County: Shasta County. 20. IMO it does not matter whether Blue Devils get the elusive three peat, They are the most decorated corps in the history of DCI, and have finished in the top five for over 40 years and have won the DCI World Championship title more than any other performing group. That says it all.
  21. Thank you for this post: It is very well written and it fully explains the case and ruling. Just for fun went to Tresona's webpage and right there at the top, it says it all: Smart Solutions for Licensing, Distribution and Monetized Display of Your Musical Performances I am not a fan of Tresona and their licensing policies for any school, band, or group who performs music for the enjoyment of others and does so for non-profit.
  22. Sorry for the late post, just finished working back-to back 12 hour shifts. This is absolutely beautiful. Looks like some very intricate in-lay work. And nothing beats the natural color and grain wood especially the exotic hardwoods. Nice work.
