I feel very similarly about Phantom Regiment that I do about Cadets.Ā  They are starting to REALLY sell this show and are in way better shape performance wise than June had indicated.Ā  Really solid percussion and musical performance overall.Ā  They've made some really smart changes too, I'm so glad that they got rid of the I AM JOAN bit and the like.Ā Ā

That said, I think the performers are way better than the show they're being given.Ā  I'm glad they're not in the state a lot of people thought they'd be in at this point, but I still think they need to take a really hard look at their placement trends and overall design/programming and make some decisions.Ā  Not going up in placement since 2012 is a pretty stark trend.Ā  They might maintain or go up one or two this year, but I still think they can do so much better.Ā  And I say that as someone who PR made fall in love with the activity about ten years ago.Ā  I want them to have a show that fires on all cylinders so badly!Ā  Do something bold and different but in a PR way!Ā  2005 sticks out as a show that did that.Ā Ā

But that all said, congrats on really kicking it into high gear to stay in finals and then some.Ā  The show has grown immensely since Detroit.Ā  Just wanna see them given a product that they're not fighting all season.Ā Ā

    Well said,

Couldnā€™t agree more, itā€™s time to update the brand but keep the DNA. Show design and pacing really is bizarre in this program. Lots of head scratching amidst much better performance achievement from June.

Nice to see twelve pages of comments on the Open Class performances in this thread. Don't think anybody noted this, so in case it's of interest, here are the corps sizes per my quick counts, for which I welcome any corrections. Abbreviations: b=battery (snares/tenors/basses/cymbals), h=horns (i.e., brass), p=pit, g=guard, dm=drum major(s).

    Vessel: 8/4/5/4b 39h 11p 21g 3dm = 95

    Incognito: 3/2/4b 13h 6p 17g 1dm = 46

    Impulse: 7/5/5/0b 17h 7p 6g 3dm = 50

    Watchmen: 7/4/5/0b 20h 8p 6g 3dm = 53

    Golden Empire: 8/4/5/5b 29h 14p 18g 3dm = 86

    Gold: 9/5/5/5b 81h 15p 26g 4dm = 150

How many open corps march a full corps? Anything north of 110 members Seems pretty large considering the field tonight, isnā€™t this a training division?

I'm calling it right now. One of the effect judges will go WAY out on a limb tonight and PR will beat Spirit, tonight only.Ā  Just like what J Bell did at the Madison show.Ā

Judges need to judge. Not show biased.

This should never be allowed to happen and be reprimanded or at least questioned when it does, unless they truely have gotten better than Iā€™m all for it, as long as it is reflected be the performance. A home show shouldnā€™t be an inflation gift.

I have Crown in 13th right now. There show is great, wonderful design, but there is no way they are beating the Bluecoats who have much more sparkle. Because we all know Sparkle = GE. And GE wins championships. Based on the fact that all of these bandosĀ like their show, and the fact that they are two points behind Blue tonight, and a full point and a half behind BAC, there is no way their lack of Sparkle can recover from that. SCV, BD, BAC, all of the Bā€™s, Crossmen, even BD ā€œCā€, they all have Sparkle. All Crown has is shower curtains, No Sparkle, no ring.Ā

so they need Neely O'Hara is what you're saying?

Other countries have their own quirks. One province in Canada is a half-hour different than the next one over. That province was the subject of recent Broadway musical. I haven't seen it; I wonder if any of the songs would translate to drum corps.

Ā Your taking about Newfoundland. They are a half hour before Maritime provinces. Iā€™m in Ontario. Eastern standard.Ā

That was a terrific show! Ā The weather was perfect, too, but Ohio has about 16Ā hours of daylight at this time of the year so no one truly played ā€œunder the lights.ā€ Ā Also, this part of Ohio is on the western edge of the eastern time zone which extends the daylight as well.

Still canā€™t get over how in the US they cut time zones in the middle of states. Must be so hectic if you happen to travel between those geographical areas for work or family.

    Well done.

Ā I was thinking coffee but it was that time of the day for me šŸ™‚

    Beiges are tough.Ā

A beige shoe would really just clean and modernize them as a juxtaposition to their repertoire. Also it cleans the leg in marching and movement more than the harshness of just black at the bottom. I personally like the get up with out the safari jacket. Looks more ā€œcoolā€.

Well, the numbers would point to an obvious suspect, but ...

Itā€™s just way too early to tell who that is. The maturity of a season is as always completely out of any kind of prediction.Ā

Things happen, good and bad to all groups. That can make a season or not. Pretty sure we have all marched our fair share of seasons to know that sometimes it hits and sometimes it splits.

  9. After now having seen videos of Spirit I am really onĀ that midnight train guys.Ā

Show is aggressive to the point of saying donā€™t forget about us this year. Lots of more beefy exposed content and thatā€™s what they need to stay with the pack, achievement and execution isnā€™t the worst either. (This will obviously mature over repetition as it does with everybody who hasĀ a great team in place).

I think we have a return finalist on our hands but Iā€™m still in the air about at what cost?

I remember competing in the U.S. Open in Marion, OH.Ā  I think it was '77.Ā  It started pouring on us while we performed.Ā  We kept playing.Ā  Judges kept judging.Ā  We got a score and came in 2nd to the Toronto Optimists who performed after us with no rain.Ā  To this day, I remember (1) the rain drops furiously bouncing off of my horn (2) how heavy our pants got when they were soaked (3) riding to our next stop overnight surrounded by wet uniforms.

Would have been the Seneca Optimists if it was 1977. Mellow Yellow.
