  1. Because most of us were local to Anaheim we did a TON of pay-for-play gigs all year; Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Angels Baseball, a couple Hollywood jobs, and local parades. Less glamorous jobs were car dealership and shopping center openings. We all hated those but it kept the money flowing. I understand in modern drum corps most kids are not local to the community? That's too bad as it eliminates a significant revenue stream potential.
  2. News to me we ever had money. DCI was formed to cut the American Legion & VFW out of the gate receipts and to give lower tier corps some money when they were getting nothing to appear.
  3. Wow! What a horrible shock. Feel bad for the current marching members, alumni, everyone. Makes me wonder who is next.
  4. I'm glad there are outside organizations around to call out abuse against marching members. And looking on MASSIN's website they are also "anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, & anti-colonialist." Not sure what that has to do with Drum Corps and I find it disappointing as I assumed they were apolitical. That said, they have the right to be whatever they want.
  5. There was a time when this task was performed by parents of corps members that went on tour and it was done effectively. I assume those days are gone like G-bugles? That's too bad because this would add yet another expense and make the cost to march even higher. And if a kid can't be spoken to by a corps staff member one-on-one without some sort of "representative" present should the activity exist anymore?
  6. I don't ever remember order of appearance, or day vs. night performance as having anything to do with motivation, confidence, or excitement, but I marched a thousand years ago.
  7. Love their mission statement and the picture of them practicing marching in a basic block. This is what Drum Corps used to be about. I wish them the best.
  8. Bobby Hatfield was sick with a cold and super nervous because he knew his mother would be in the audience. It ended up being one of the greatest performances of all time. I get why there are reaction videos to it, my favorite being from the young female opera singer.
  9. An attractive woman watches Drum Corps, emotes, gets paid, and Drum Corps gets a little more exposure. It's a win-win all around.
  10. Hard to believe he has no Drum Corps background, but maybe that's exactly what is needed. Welcome to the fam Nate Boudreaux.
  11. If Ron Nankervis won't do it did Don Pesceone have any kids?
  12. I had a different experience and observation. I saw basically the same ethnic make-up as existed in the general population at the time and our corps even more, perhaps because we were based in Southern California. I do agree the cost of participation is too high but I don't see how that can be avoided. As long as everyone has equal opportunity to participate and all are treated with dignity and respect that's what counts in my book.
  13. Drum Corps is and always has been the most diverse and inclusive organization I can think of.
  14. It's nice to be remembered and we were lucky to have made it on the field every year including 1972 once our founder resigned.
  15. If what they say is true in that "they hope to be in compliance by January 2024" I also hope the CA FTB & DOJ are willing to wait that long. They've received two warnings already and there won't be a third. Perhaps they're in communications with both agencies(?) I was hoping to hear they've already submitted past due filings.
  16. Ron Nankervis. Current CEO of W.G.I. and Anaheim Kingsmen Alumnus. Knows how to run a large "pageantry of the arts" organization and more importantly how to grow it.
  17. This article is a cut & paste of what Mr. Lesher has been saying here the past few months. When and IF SCV catches up on their delinquent filings, it would be nice to see a follow-up article about it. But that would never happen.
  18. The NFL just finished paying off a billion dollar settlement for CTE injuries. They should make the switch before having to pay a similar settlement. It would be a lot cheaper in the long run. Thankfully the football team I care about already plays on beautiful Bermuda natural grass. And did someone say "less props"? 😀
  19. If SCV actually fields a corps in 2024 and they tour nationally, they will place comfortably higher than 12th. My clock is ticking. I don't care who Pacific Crest "knocks out" as long as they make it to Finals - SOON.
  20. Any list that doesn't contain PACFIC CREST in the Top 12 of 2024 ain't right.
  21. Another positive step. Doesn't make sense they would make these hires and that accomplished people would accept without intending to get right with the CA FTB. RIGHT!!?? 👍 😬
  22. They've received two warning letters and there won't be a third. If they don't comply the next notification will be from the CA DOJ informing them their non-profit status is suspended. How long to get to that point I don't know, but I do know it will take the state at least 90 days to examine their back filings. The fact they announced an intent to field a corps in 2024 and a staff - a good staff - tells me they intend to catch up, or maybe have already submitted their back filings. If not, well, then they're beyond hope.
