  1. I had the same experience.  They charged me $150 on June 22nd for the whole year.  I contacted them on June 27th and they tried to offer me 30% off.

Stick with it, and don't let them stick it to us.  They agreed to refund $120.01 to my credit card, and "only" charge me $29.99 for the five days of NO service.  I hope that you at least got that concession from them Mello Dude.

I know that DCI has other issues, but I think that they should get involved and discourage this treatment of their loyal fans.

  2. Crown - They blew the walls down. Very cool moments laced throughout the show...The ballad is pretty cheesy. I haven't hear such poor dialogue since Sara Jones told us her life story in '08.

Nice review, guy. I appreciate your taking the time to share.

Musically, I believe that the ballad is the emotional climax of the show, and it might prove to be one of the most beautiful moments of this drum corps season. As far as the dialogue, it's straight out of the source material; Phillip Glass's "Einstein on the Beach".

Enjoy the rest of the season!

  3. You're right. Let me right this wrong.

Les préludes has been played by numerous corps, including The Cavaliers and Southwind. In 1974 it was performed by both Phantom Regiment and Velvet Knights.

Phantom Regiment has played John Corigliano TWICE over the past few years.

Corps too numerous to mention have played Beethoven.

    Thank you for paying attention.

  4. The San Diego Symphony has a very special program coming up in early April. Renowned percussionist DAME EVELYN GLENNIE will be performing John Corigliano's percussion concerto, CONJURER, with the San Diego Symphony.

The weekend will start out on Thursday, April 7th at 7:30 pm with a SYMPHONY EXPOSED program focusing entirely on the Corigliano piece. Join host Nuvi Mehta, the composer and performer as they analyze the piece in-depth and perform it as well.

Then on Friday, April 8th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, April 10th at 2:00 pm the Corigliano piece will be performed in the Symphony's JACOBS MASTERWORKS CONCERT along with Beethoven's 2nd Symphony and Franz Liszt's Les préludes.

This will be a very exciting weekend....one you DON'T want to miss!

  5. Working at the San Diego Symphony, I take time away from my desk to listen to the orchestra whenever I can. This morning, while watching a rehearsal for Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) I sat upright in my chair, hearing the opening fanfare from Phantom Regiment's 2008 Spartacus pre-show. Can't wait to hear it three more times this weekend!

  6. Just got an email from DCI saying 2009 the DCI CDs will start shipping in the next week (the week beginning Oct. 5th) and that the DVDs are still scheduled to start shipping in mid-November. This is typical of when they usually ship CDs and DVDs, as I recall.

What is NOT typical, is that they already ran our credit cards through. Usually that hasn't been done until the items shipped....

  7. Probably just a urban myth, but I heard that Madison was involved with two judge fatalities back in the day. One the result of a rifle strike and the other was a heart attack (captured on the judges tape in the box).

    Any validity to these?

From the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame:

    ROBERT JACOBS

Robert "Bobby" Jacobs played in the percussion section of the Reilly Raiders prior to taking over as Captain of the Color Guard from 1946 to 1953. Bob assisted in the formation of the National Judges Association in 1960 with Windy Wildemore and others and Judged with the organization until his passing in 1980. Bob suffered a heart attack while judging on the field at a DCI show in West Chester, Pa and unfortunately died that night

I was there that night...Madison had taken the field and was just about to start their show when the judge collapsed in front of the corps. The ambulance that was standing by came right over. After a few minutes, the Scouts left the field, and the announcer said that the show would resume in something like 15 or 30 minutes. I remember that the little kid behind me let out a loud BOO, and his dad slapped him in the head.

We found out later that night that Mr. Jacobs had passed away.
