  1. I don't think they necessarily have to bring back the drum corps nuts, as they now have different drum corps nuts. The activity is, and should be regardless of our personal preference, geared towards what the marching members want. Today's teens and early 20's members don't want to do old style shows, they want to do what is done today. And based on the attendance at shows each year which keep increasing, it's working. As for everything in your first paragraph, different story all together. I think the "survival" of this activity depends largely on $$$$$$. And moreso, corps able to support taking a corps on the road each summer. I know some of this may be off the original topic, just replying to some comments in this post. Like you Keith, I love what the performers do today. Looking back even after typing this, I think I agree with everything you say, just confused on the bring back the drum corps nuts part. There is a huge fan base, and social media is making things more accessable for the younger generation.
  2. Apologies for what might be an obvious answer to many byt unknown to me, but what is Glass Door that keeps being spoken about?
  3. I have on good authority that high temperatures for this years Texas Triangle are only forecast to be in the low 170's.
  4. I'm not sure why this hasn't come up, but 2021 showed in many ways that a shorter, more local tour, can work. This lends to the regional model for sure and probably eliminates a three-regional format. But I imagine this to be more sustainable than what is happening today financially. OK, you perform less which is a bummer, but you perform. It sure seemed like the kids who performed in 2021 had a blast doing it and it was certainly appreciated by the crowd. Yes, the crowd was smaller (Covid, lack of scores, less corps), but if that model took place with scores, I think they could be on to something. An acquaintance of mine who shall remain nameless told me in 2021, they asked for some judges to do files for the corps in Indy, no numbers, just feedback. The overwhelming response from the judges was that things were at a high performance level even with a shorter season (and thus, shows were probably planned that way). What I found more interesting is what he said happened after the show. In past years, judges would have to steer clear of staff members afterwards with more judged shows during the week, but whatever watering hole they attended were being frequented by many of the staffs of the corps. In this situation, they talked, had a few drinks together, and talked about the shows a little more. But what I found interesting is how many of the staff members said they loved the schedule for the season and thought it was very rewarding and a great experience. (Yes, this is secondhand information and may not be the majority, but I feel like we could've learned more from that 2021 season). My wife has said many times, we had a great opportunity after Covid to do a restart on many things, and instead, we just went back to doing everything the same exact way and wondered why we had the same exact problems.
  5. Terri, I stayed about 15 minutes east of downtown at a country inn and suites, it’s the same hotel I stay At for dci. Cost about $100 a night, which is less than half the cost of a downtown hotel. If you don’t mind driving back and forth and dropping $20 to park each day, it’s not bad. Got a rental car pretty cheap as well. Guessing the car would cost more in summer but for this trip it was worth it.
  6. I'm a high school band director, and I've been attending DCI and DCA shows live since 1991. I regularly attend Finals for DCI and DCA every year. This was my first year ever attending BOA and it was fantastic. If you like drum corps, I'm sure you'll find plenty of enjoyment out of these performances. Yeah, the finalists are well advertised, but there are 91 bands that performed over Thursday and Friday. The nice thing is the prelims are spread out over thursday and friday so you can basically show up anytime you want and there are performances going on, minus a small number of 15 or 30 minute breaks. Two judging panels for prelims so the breaks are few. Tickets were $35 for each of the first two days. $40 for seminfinals (top 33 bands) and I think I paid $50 for finals The crowds are appreciative, many standing ovations for almost all of the groups, whether they finished 1st or 91st. All but finals are general admission seating so you can move around for different vantage points, or park yourself in the same place for a while. All in all, not knowing what to expect, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Indy, and I also played two round of golf on Friday as it was warm enough (50 degrees for me is warm enough to golf in November).
  7. Saw somebody with this quote about the cross to cross on a facebook thread: "32 years and we are still searching for a better drill move." I suspect we're going to be looking a lot longer than that. 🙂
  8. I'm 47 years old, and I am quite certain that more were older than me than younger. Honestly speaking, I felt a little bad for the performers. Not necessarily for the size of the crowd, as finals had a lot more people there than last year, but the lack of applause moments. There were some moments from some of the drumlines for example where some serious stuff was being played, and I almost felt wrong for being the only one clapping. I think the age is too high for some to appreciate what exactly is being presented. Not a dig, just an observation, I appreciated it. I am excited for the Indy venture. I think there are more pros than cons, and wish everyone luck in making it a success. I'm more excited at the prospect of a few northeast shows where you get 5 or 6 DCI Open Class corps with a helping of 5 or 6 DCA corps. I think that potential is exciting!
  9. 94, 95, 97, 99, 00, 01, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23 That looks like eleven total. Favorite is tough, though I will say 2021 is up there just for the sheer emotion of having so many back after Covid. 1999 may be the standard for me though, great trip and great corps!
  10. If it's 2013, we eloquently refer to it as drunken ET
  11. Renegades are returning. New slogan, "Drum Corps is Pleasant"
  12. Attendance was much lower than any other Rochester year. Downstairs it seemed the center three sections had a pretty good sized crowd but beyond that, not much. Crowd extended a little further out upstairs. Also need to take into consideration that in some of the 2006-2011 rochester years, that finals crowd and late prelims crowd would be filled in with corps who didnt make finals, which made the crowd bigger. Weather was a factor depending on what you liked. If you didn't like the heat, Saturday was rough as it was sunny and pushing 90. If you didn't like fall weather, Sunday was rough as it was low 60's, breezy, and rain towards the end.
  13. If we go by number of corps, there were 12 in 2019, Skyliners and Buccaneers didn’t go out so that would be your 14 from 2019. Of the 14, southern Knights and Sunrisers won’t be competing, so down to 12 at the moment. So much to be said here, and let’s face it, it’s all speculation or opinions unless you’re on the inside. I hope The other 12 corps make it out, but only if it makes financial sense to do so. In 2019, many corps were pretty full with guard and percussion, but brass lines across the board (top 3 being the exception), were noticeably smaller than the year before. I think The Wild popularity of indoor and WGI has contributed to this to some extent. But again, that was three years ago now, and the three years that just happened were unlike any other. good luck to the remaining competitors!
  14. Looked like upper level had more seats sold for sure probably based on those who ordered tickets for Williamsport and didn't get to use them. Lower level was pretty much choose your own seat at this point. It's early, but we'll see what happens with regards to crowd size as time goes on. I am sure there are many who are going to wait just to make sure that the event will be taking place after the past year and a half, and who could blame them. Big difference from the debut up there in 2006 (at that stadium anyway), but without being accused of asking people to get off my lawn, for better or worse, a lot has changed in 15 years. Hope they get a good crowd when all is said and done.
  15. Mandatory flub lines for every corps was an addendum to this proposal. 🙂
  16. Not trying to create turmoil where there isn't any, but in any of the announcements for the DCA Championships moving to Rochester for 2022 and 2023, I didn't see the traditional Labor Day Weekend dates mentioned. Honestly, I didn't hear any dates mentioned. Can someone in the know advise as to whether the dates are being discussed as a possible move away from Labor Day weekend at all? It seems that has been an often discussed change over the years, but it always stays in the Labor Day Weekend dates. Thanks in advance!
  17. The allegations are bad.......but the response from the organization????? Good heavens, that's a terrible response.
  18. I don't think weekend warriors exist as much now. DCA is full of younger talent looking to get experience to do DCI in some cases, or perhaps can't do the time commitment of DCI (so mildly a weekend warrior). I think the survival of the corps will determine DCA's future. The bodies may be there to do DCA, but the corps may not if this keeps up. Corps in good financial standing may be more apt to survive this, but if the number of corps that survive is small, will the need be there?
  19. Did the Allentown double header and was happy to do Semis and Finals in Orlando. Though Carolina Crown ended up ultimately in 12th, corps 13-16 were something to see. Colts were super fun with BS&T, Kiwanis treatment of Evita had some really cool moments. One of my favorite Boston shows of that era, lots of emotion throughout. Academie Musicale in 16th, but I think the guard was 9th at Quarterfinals, and rightfully so. Spirit returning to the Friday show to kick things off was a great start. Magic of Orlando on Friday is one of the all-time great rain hype shows you can see. Tons of rain, tons of hype, hometown crowd, what a treat! Personally liked Cadets more but BD was flawless. Thought Madison did enough to beat Phantom but oh well. Crossmen was a treat. I was starting to grow up a little more intellectually. With that, I loved SCV, and at the moment I wasn't sure I knew why, I just did.
  20. 1991 was my first year seeing drum corps live. Attended Drums at the Meadowlands in late June. Fell in love with Phantom Regiment's show that year, so beautiful! They won a seven corps field over the Cadets, Crossmen, Spirit of Atlanta (one of my all time favorite shows of theirs as I love the movie Glory). Boston, L'Insolite and Dutch Boy were there also. Next show was DCI East in Allentown, the first time I got to see a full corps retreat. Boston started up Conquest (didn't know that at the time), and I couldn't imagine why the audience was going so crazy, but I liked it! I was about to be a Junior in High School, so to say these two shows were life changing would be an understatement.
