  1. So, once DCI went to ESPN briefly and to theaters, is really getting out to the masses more than PBS did?
  2. Unbeknownst to us....when DCI stopped using PBS that was the changing of show ideas for DCI corps. If you watched DCI on PBS you didn't see a 'theme" but you did hear a lot of recognizable music. This is NOT "I remember when drum corps was drum corps" rant. I enjoyed listening to corps playing different pieces of music in their show. In the 80's we saw corps had to have a theme and even explain their concept (still do today). Who started this idea? Remember Blue Devils opening up with "Free" by Chicago and a concert of Mangione's "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor.' Later Mangione's "Chase The Clouds Away." Very entertaining! Today, although the musicianship level exceeds the level in the 70's and 80's (IMO), I find most corps boring muically and visually. I watched Crown do a "parade at Disney Springs a couple of years ago and couldn't believe the guard CAN NOT March!!! They walked and talked with each other and wavered at audience. I don't recall seeing a rifle section spinning the same routine at the same time in a section. Today I see more individual work done probably to avoid mistakes.
  3. The Corps staff go to DCI Meetings and propose judging changes. The corps vote on those changes. WHY visual is more important than Music? I don't know
  4. Royal Coachmen (NY)....1977 PARENTS! A group of parents banded together and made our directors life heck! He had left the morning we were to leave for Philly and returned to direct 2 weeks later. Winter did not see a great rehearsal period but we were a better playing corps. Then May 1977 he quit for good. The guy that took over merged with another local corps and handed the reins over to people that didn't have a clue. Never to wear our uni's again. Some kids left for Seneca and other corps. I wish I would have too. YOURS?
  5. I know many will hate this but. The End Is Near. Will corps be able to continue to tour as prices still rise? Gas prices will rise and the push will be on for electric (SMH), Tour fees will have to rise and there will come a point where there will be less kids that want to do it.
  6. Does anything last in Erie? I don't say that to be mean but corps seem to go away when in Erie.
  7. Goodbye (Garfield) Cadets! Sorry you had to leave and you will be missed.
  8. And a few years after Carmine Appice mentioned adding guitars....prophetic too
  9. No not at all! Spent 40 plus years in the activity. If you haven't noticed the activity is dying and there are only a few corps left who can afford to tour. I find NO joy in this BUT it is what it is!
  10. I can see a few corps going the route of Brass Theater, as I see it, the end draws near for drum corps. Finances, Pedophiles, Egos oh my!
  11. I wasn't that good to go anywhere else! I joined the Army
  12. Mine was......"Oh good you play trumpet? Here's a soprano!? I also got the finger chart because it was a Valve/Rotor Getzen. I didn't have a problem.
  13. Back in the 1970's, how many corps auditioned members? I would say not many since there were corps all over North America. Maybe Vanguard and Blue Devils? Today there are only a few corps left and since there is a cap on how many members you can have I would image for some corps, they are coveted spots! Thoughts?
  14. Cadets....Garfield, NJ to Allentown, PA to Erie, PA.......Why? Crossmen.... Allentown, PA to San Antonio, TX...Why? Others?
  15. I tried to get info on this show years ago, so I will try again..... Late season 1971 I went to a show in Batavia, NY for St. Joe's. I remember Boston, Mark Twain Cadets (replaced Blue Rock), maybe 27th and possibly Kilties. Only one person that I know remembers this show (sort of) but was wondering who else might have been there or marched it
  16. Motivation? Because there are scumbags out there that have gotten away with a lot and, back in the day, it was swept under the rug like "the old boys network." Saving peoples behinds because they have a name or title! There is a recent case in Florida (my neck of the woods) where a teacher was known for 20 years to be doing things an adult shouldn't be doing and he finally got nailed for it. I replaced a person in NY that was doing the same. I don't want to see the activity die but lets face it, they are shooting themselves all the time. If BD gets brought up in a case or two, would that then mean DC is done?
  17. I would like to see a National Ad go out to find all drum corps abuse victims, hear their stories because it would be a huge blow to the activity! I don't think that this post should be removed! Lets talk about what most of us have known for decades! Why hide it now?
  18. August 9, 1972 Marion Cadets--78.20 Cardinals--69.40 Grenadiers--62.45 Mello-Dears--59.60 Royal Coachmen--49.20
  19. I remember seeing Marion in 1972 at a show in Bellefountaine, OH. I remember Beverly Cardinals, Buckeyes, Marion Cadets, and Mello Dears there. Not sure who else was there
  20. Whatever happened to this show in Buffalo? I thought attendance was great! Jack Gaylord did a super job in making this event happen and now NOTHING! Did DCI pull away from Buffalo?
