  1. Pretty sure I saw a band catalog years ago (almost certainly Fred J Miller) that had the classic cavalier uniform in multiple colors including red. The princess Ann fabulous marching cavaliers is the closest real world example I could find. Generic red jacket with a sash and black Aussie. It’s my day off and I’m bored.
  2. I keep hoping for a vintage steampunk machine-esque type of show
  3. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=932875491834080&set=a.519193453202288&type=3 they just changed their Facebook photo. Curious…
  4. Obscure fact of the day: my high school band may have been the first to march on the old RCA (Hoosier) Dome turf. It was so springing that a dropped rifle had a fair chance of bouncing high enough to catch it. show was a cadet style west side story opener with classic Santa Clara guard uniforms and a cavalier step over and a When You Wish Upon a Star closer arranged by Richard Saucedo. This was 1985 Star of Indiana’s first season but I’m sure it was just a coincidence (wink)
  5. Any thoughts on this? Would like to here from those who marched on the different turfs if it makes that much a difference https://fox59.com/sports/turf-at-lucas-oil-stadium-to-be-replaced/#:~:text=The Indianapolis Colts' home dome,be completed by July 2024.
  6. Yeah, I keep wanting to call it the meat grinder but pretty sure deli slicer is the “official” name for the move.
  7. I love that they brought back the deli slicer but I don’t know if the will ever get it clean the way it is written this year. The original was a wide open full field formation. This one is compressed down to the front hashes and has the mellos and tenor drums right in the middle of the circle of rifles. Hopefully they will come up with a way to give it some more clarity cause it was an epic move back in 2003 and deserves so love and recognition
  8. A lot of holes last night. At least one in the color guard and 5-6 in the brass. Really hurt the clarity on a lot of the visual. Lots of cleaning to do with the color guard but the writing is a huge improvement from the last couple of years. I loved the guard uniforms when they revealed them before the show but was afraid the bright pink and purple accents were a bit too garish and would look cartoonish on the field. It was actually quite the opposite (at least on video, couldn’t make it to the show this year) very subtle and had a more “formal” look of an actual jacket and pants rather than a spandex bodysuit lots of potential with this show both visually and musically. A lot going on at times, maybe too much, but show clean up nicely
  9. Cavaliers 1992 always stands out for me. Most company fronts are about building up the tension as the front comes come together for the big resolution. But this one just pushes the tension and anxiety to a higher level Around the 8 minute mark. The second front about a minute later is pretty awesome as well
  10. They also seem to be using a stylized version of the plume instead of an actual plume. It matches their show graphic and I believe they said that their props would be incorporating that same stylized plume.
  11. Those photos are using their new uniforms as backdrops. The first set is of the brass and shows part of the main uniform, the second set is of the guard and their uniform, the last is of the percussion and uses the white Aussie ok the last set isn’t just the percussion, my bad
  12. Now that we have an idea of at least the structure of the show, what other familiar tunes do you think we might hear? And what part of the Rutter Gloria will they use? My money is on the opening fanfare they created from mvt 2. along those same lines, what visuals do you think they will bring back? Diamond cutter? Dragon? Step over? Kaleidoscope geometric shapes? Whatever they called the gear fan thing from Machine and Secret Society? Or maybe the full field form compression?
  13. Awesome! Way back when I was a junior in high school (1985) Our show that year featured a cadet style west side story medley where we high stepped over the color guard. we did not have much exposure to drum corps. We were a track show band (it’s an Indiana thing) so our season ran during the summer. I didn’t know the cavalier connection with the step over till much later. another cavalier connection to that show was our closer. It was When You Wish Upon a Star that morphed into a jazzy version of twinkle twinkle little star. Arranged especially for us, by Richard Saucedo.
  14. I agree completely. The visual problems with the Cavaliers have been building for the last few competitive season. I think everything just imploded last season. 2022 was the first time since 2015 that they didn’t end the show by breaking formation and rushing the sideline. It was a pitch perfect end for the propaganda show, but after that it just seemed like lazy writing (although I didn’t mind it as much in 2019). The guard unfortunately made up for that last year by ending almost every section of the show by throwing down their equipment and posing dramatically. when I saw “Live from the Rose” I thought it was great for a shorten exhibition season. A show that seemed more about having fun and playing to the crowd than putting a well thought out, detailed concept on the field . It was extremely frustrating to see that lack of design carry over to 2022. The designers seemed like they just had a piece of music they wanted to use use (sign of the times) and just backwards engineered a show around it by throwing in some time references here and there and calling it a day. I agree that the brass was under scored all season and I think that goes back to the visual. GE is king in DCI, and a lack of GE visual can drag other captions down. The guard added almost nothing to the show visually. There were so many bad choices in the guard design. there is a lot more that can be said about what went wrong the last few years and last year specifically but I have always loved the Cavaliers and I don’t like being negative so I’m going to end it here with some more positive remarks. My issues are with the staff not the members and I think they performed last year at such a high level of achievement that they were able to elevate the show beyond what was designed for them. The guard in particular were able to take a poorly designed guard book and make it more than what they were given. I’m excited to see what the corps brings to the field this year. I have no concerns about the brass and percussion and I think visual has no where to go but up
  15. I liked last year’s uniform too, I just don’t think it worked well on the field. One of the big complaints about last years show was how most of the visuals were between the sidelines and the front hash marks. While I agree with that, they did actually use almost the all the field at times. But whenever they were backfield they faded into the green of the turf. Especially when facing the back stands
  16. I was excited when they revealed their look for 2022. I thought the half skirt was maybe a bit too Blue Devilish, but it had enough nods to the Cavalier’s traditional look that I was onboard with it. About midway through the season I was done with it. Other than the fake watch on the left gauntlet it did nothing to compliment the show. The show was so bland visually(sorry, it was) that I couldn’t help but wonder if the traditional white aussies could have elevated the design. I’m all for seeing the performers expressions when the performance is what brings out the emotion. When facial expressions are programmed into the performance it looks fake to me. Seeing pictures of the guard this season with big smiles during practice is kinda cringe for me.
  17. Cavaliers 2014 Immortal was a great show that I don’t think gets enough praise. Music selections were spot on perfect for that show. Some great visuals, awesome gimmicks, a guard that really sold the program. A “dark” show that they manage to pull off that was still fun without getting too cheesy (just the right amount of cheese). Not saying it should of placed higher, just don’t think it gets the love it deserves.
  18. How about a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, where Juliet is vampire queen with an army of vampires and Romeo is the leader of the alien mercenaries sent to eliminate them. The music is a mashup of West Side Story, malagueña, Appalachian Spring and ABBA. The setting is the old west and the vampires sparkle.
  19. I’ve always wanted the Cavaliers to do a steampunk version of machine or a superhero show with music from the incredibles when the unveiled their uniforms in 2019 I thought we might be getting the steampunk machine but it was not to be. I’ve been searching for some good music for that but haven’t come up with anything solid yet
  20. Nobody talking about the new ending? Not sure if that’s a good sign. I thought it gave the show some nice symmetry and made the use of the corner tarps make a little more sense. A nice call back to 2003. But not sure it was needed. There are other parts of the show that could use some attention A good soft ending needs to flow organically from whatever came before it. This just feel’s tacked on
  21. An interesting point, but would you also add multiple judges for brass and percussion? Those sections also make up large percentages of membership and have multiple demands. At first glance multiple guard judges sounds like a great idea. I agree that the demand and responsibilities of the guard as increased but again the same can be said for brass and percussion. Does performing high speed drill maneuvers or body work while playing a technical passage get taken into account on the brass or percussion sheets? I’m all for more judges but how many is too many, and how many of these skills, be it brass, percussion, or guard overlap on the GE and Visual captions
  22. As someone who marched in a good small high school band in the 80’s, that is pretty accurate. You used what you had and replaced pieces as needed. A full set of anything was rare. Budgets were small.
  23. My guess is the blue green variation is the horns/percussion after the black comes off. Similar to last years mid show change.
  24. This is just speculation on my part, but since Phantom’s uniform reveal didn’t include helmets, I assumed they were just wearing them for the parade and would not be part of their show.
