  1. Echoes in the Valley revised and expanded 2nd edition now available. Echoes in the Valley is a 476 page/ 50 year history of the drum and bugle corps activity in Watkins Glen, NY. First published in 2004 this revised/expanded edition is more than double in length to include 477 pictures (167 in color) interviews and results from 271 contests dating back to 1933. The is a rich small town drum corps story, the history of Watkins Glen’s four corps: The Squires, Pages, Legion Cadets and Seneca Chiefs starting with American Legion and a dozen or so Boy Scouts in 1930 and culminating at the dawn and early years of DCI. The narrative includes first-hand accounts of the various corps activities from the 1930s, through the war years and into the birth and early years of DCI with special emphasis on the Squires “worst to first” run from a last place finish at the New York State Championship to 4 consecutive state titles and a near miss with a 13th place finish at the 1975 DCI championship in Philadelphia. Premium quality signed copies are available directly from the author by responding here or here: judspena@aol.com. 2. When I first heard this my gut reaction was....not so good. But let's face it. DCA is struggling. 12 corps at last year's championship. They did a great job but, with some exceptions, they were smaller and weaker, no disrespect meant to any of them. The crowd was sparse. Supposedly 1600 tickets sold but I don't believe there were that many people there. As the corps' membership gets younger Labor Day weekend is becoming problematic. College and high school obligations beckon. A Saturday morning championship contest in Indianapolis is by no means ideal but they have to do something. I'm skeptical but I say try it. Maybe it will work out for the better.
