  1. I think that's fantastic! But I didn't mention Scott Boerma at all. The name I referenced is Robert W. Smith. EDIT: I now see the confusion... I was using the "demeaning" use of "ripping." You had unflattering things to say about RWS's arrangement in 2011. And you did so not as a fan but when you were the brass arranger for the Scouts. Just seems like a weird choice in that capacity.
  2. Isn't that webpage for the media organization he founded?
  3. What a ballsy choice by Daniel Montoya Jr. to maintain a drum corps staff "in" and "out" page. Bro doesn't want friends in pageantry? He ripped Robert W. Smith's Scouts arrangements while employed as Scouts arranger, so I guess this is part for the course.
  4. *Could I think Jeremy Hunt is good, and he should be able to land somewhere good. The entire Cavies design was a mixed bag (outside of percussion), so it's kind of hard to pinpoint one guy.
  5. Again, continuing off topic, but we won't get anything until Labor Day... This statement from 1987 is 🤣😂🤣-inducing in 2023: "A valuable lesson was learned this year--props are difficult to utilize and they detract from practice in other areas"
  6. Getting off topic, but... it's pretty wild to think back on the decision to hire Jim Mason. He may have been an up-and-comer, but the Colts weren't what they are today - not even close to sniffing finals. Bill Cook hired him because Cook's kid marched Colts. It goes to show that folks at smaller corps have what it takes to run competitive corps (especially if they have $$$ to do it).
  7. I don't know if it's "not good," but it's definitely weird.
  8. I interpreted this post differently until I looked at facebook... Mark Richardson posted about openings for all three of the above roles - program coordinator, brass caption head, and corps manager.
  9. This is routinely brought up. Not everybody has to be treated as adversarial. Hopefully that message sticks.
  10. Not EVERYONE takes EVERYTHING too literally. I did I just take that too literally? (Words have meaning, unless you don't want conversation)
  11. The BAC designers described the white whale as the elusive DCI title, not necessarily BD. And I'd guess they changed the ending on finals night just to throw a curve ball, similar to what that design staff did at Crown with the redemption ending on finals night in 2016 (I think just finals night - unsure). I'd bet it had nothing to do with BD winning.
  12. More likely a total inability to grasp humor by the reader
  13. A few consolidated thoughts in anticipation of 2024... Despite the tremendous improvements in competence with a show that I liked a lot, general issues that I had with the 2022 Regiment show: - The props were lame - The story (i.e., why we're doing what we're doing) was muddled - The closer seemed slapped on and didn't fit I think they took care of all of these issues in 2023. Props were off the charts, used well, moved well. What I was seeing and hearing made sense relative to the program. And the music and pacing was perfect. If I had a wish list for 2024, it would be: - Somehow splitting the difference between "what music GE judges want" and "the Regiment of 10-15 years ago" with regard to music design - I'd love to hear some more "classical" music but not to the detriment of creativity - A couple big drill moves - Keep improving the guard - I noticed the Regiment guard for the first time in years, and I hope they can take on more difficulty/exposure - If the Rennicks become available and they were to consider involvement with Regiment, I hope it's only in a consulting role - let the Rennick proteges continue to lead - Don't listen to me
  14. Baby's firsts... First DCI broadcast: 1993 First live show: Tulsa in 1996 (rained out, with standstill performances by Magic, Crown, Cavies, and Regiment in the school's PAC) First live finals: 2002, and I've only missed 03, 11, and 20 since for a total of 19 Favorite: I really liked 2002, probably because it was the first
  15. I'd say it's also possible that, if SCV doesn't return next year, those particular designers mentioned won't necessarily be elsewhere in 2024. - Gaines spent several years out of drum corps and got back in only at a corps in the town where he lives - Van Doren has arranged in DCI for only one season, though he might be sought after now - Rennick(s) would be the most likely of the three to be in a new role next year given that he's been in it for so long, though he could also say "arranging for Troopers is enough for me" Otherwise - Koter, Toth, and Woodley were presumably encouraged back into drum corps by Gaines, so they may not be itching to go elsewhere - Rosales would probably be sought after and could go anywhere
  16. There's usually someone who posts the notable outcomes that are possible during finals week, but I didn't see it this year. A few that I've thought of... Colts in back-to-back finals for the first time since 98-99 Troopers in back-to-back finals for the first time since 85-86 Blue Knights avoided being left out of back-to-back finals for the first time since 01-03 Crossmen out of finals back-to-back for the first time since 10-11 Mandarins are the first new corps in the top six since Crown in 2007
  17. I thought they were good. And they clearly aren't there anymore. That pretty much wraps up my point, so I guess it was stated matter-of-factly. And I don't even need to brag about "scoop" (I mean, really, LOL).
