  1. TWO missing for the show with Boston/PR and ONE missing for the show with Blue Stars. Wow, that's a lot.
  2. Thinking ahead here: those endzones and field logos are going to perfectly match Mandarins' color scheme. Members just might briefly disappear on some parts of the field! 😝
  3. Staff conducting on-field warmups is totally old school though. You don't see it very often anymore since most hornlines don't even get to warmup on the field--they're setting up props.
  4. There are no penalties at most shows anyway--only at the major "regionals" and championships.
  5. So is this formerly the Ogden show? That was the show last year with the crazy gusty winds that carried away Academy's exercise ball props for their Willy Wonka show.
  6. I remember hearing Rios for, I think, brass. And Madden on Vis, I believe.
  7. For those who are there, how's the crowd size so far? Love that so many of the sections have individual seats WITH seat backs!
  8. Interesting. There are several judges today who were NOT in California either weekend, so we may see some interesting score swings one way or another.
  9. Bad sign when high cam is already on the struggle bus just during the National Anthem. I'll trade a jacked up high cam for good audio though. Fingers crossed!
  10. Yeah, as it stands scores are scheduled to be announced about 2/3 the way through BK’s show. So if anyone ever wanted “proof” of slotting, there ya go: the score was already set before BK could even finish their performance. 😂
  11. Also, the placement of the scores announcement in the official DCI schedule is definitely incorrect. If I had to guess, I’d bet it’s supposed to be at 9:49pm.
  12. You beat me to making this thread, which is fine. I was having a bit of a morality crisis over the thread title I had in mind: Corps Encore Action. 😏
  13. That was my first year marching in drum corps, so all those shows that season left an impression on me (OBSESSED with Sky Ryders’ WSS that year). To this day, I melt every time I hear Autumn Leaves because I loved hearing Bluecoats play it.
  14. As much as I LOVE Mandarins, I think Boston is far better positioned to win a championship before Mandarins break into the top tier.
  15. Just got home from the show, and I’m still riding high on Mandarins breaking 80 before leaving California. The cool thing is that the corps was still on the field (having just finished their encore) when the scores were announced, so they got to let out a huge celebratory yell in front of a very appreciative hometown crowd. Some takeaways/final thoughts: 1) BD is unreal. I mean, when you’re a consistent champion, you’re going to get the best of the best clamoring to join, so clearly BD knows how to pick their MMs from among all their auditioners. 2) Mandarins have a confidence and swagger with this show that screams “we are to be taken seriously.” I love it. I’m so proud of them and the step up that this year’s program has taken in just about every way. 3) PC, BK, and Academy all had enjoyable shows that I MUCH preferred to any of their 2022 offerings. So bravo to their design teams for that. 4) I will always have so much respect for Open Class (having grown up marching in Div. II/III), so bravo to Impulse, Golden Empire, BDB, and Gold. California has so many wonderful programs for students to choose from if they want to march drum corps. 5) I don’t know what it’s going to take, but the quality of audio that we get from Flo streams not only doesn’t do justice to these corps—it almost feels like the stream is deliberately lying to us. Stick-outs, thin and unbalanced sound, and all the other stuff that makes a corps’ performance sound extremely rough—that is NOT what it sounds like live. I mean, there was never a question that live would be better. But right now, live isn’t anywhere close to how these corps are being represented audio-wise on Flo. It’s really a dang shame.
  16. Sorry, forgot to take a pic of Mandarins! Felt like a really solid and settled run for them. That show is just so dang cool. The writing, transitions, pacing are all SO top-notch, and they seem really solid across all captions. We’ll see if that performance was enough for an 80, but I wouldn’t argue with it if that happened.
  17. Blue Devils: HOLY ****! They’re impossibly good. I mean, what else can I say? They’re in late-July form on July 10. It’s crazy. I’ll be shocked if anyone catches them.
  18. Blue Knights: if the entire show felt like their intro, I think they’d be a shoo-in for finals. As it is, they are LOUD, but at many times they’re pushing just a bit edgy. But that volume definitely generates some excitement (if not ear fatigue). I don’t care for the narration, as there doesn’t seem to be any type of arc happening (it seems to be saying the same thing throughout the show). I actually heard the bass drum pitch change although not being a drum guy I’m not sure I can appreciate what it may have added. Great job, BK!
  19. Pacific Crest: I don’t quite know what that show was about (besides being called “Goddess”), but they’re really starting to sell and perform the show nicely. Like Academy, this is a corps whose sound is REALLY diminished on Flo. They have a much fuller sound in-person. Really nice performance and so glad to see them improving so much.
  20. Academy: I enjoy this show SO much more than their recent programs. Really enjoyable arrangements of a great repertoire. They didn’t use their big stage today, and I’m wondering if it’s because it didn’t fit down the very narrow entrance/exit ramp. They were also down to only 8 tubas (not sure how many they normally have). I can’t help but think that the crazy California tour of the past four days took its toll on the MM’s health (not enough actual floor time to recover from each day). Anyway, Flo does NOT do Academy (or any corps) justice. What a great performance from them!
