  1. This should be fun. Since it's all about opinions I will take a few liberties that are likely to ruffle some feathers. 😉 My list will contain who I would believe to be the outright winners - no ties! 1987: Santa Clara Vanguard 1988: Blue Devils 1989: Santa Clara Vanguard 1990: Star of Indiana 1991: The Cavaliers 1992: The Cavaliers 1993: Star of Indiana 1994: Blue Devils 1995: The Cavaliers 1996: Blue Devils 1997: Blue Devils 1998: The Cavaliers 1999: Santa Clara Vanguard 2000: The Cadets 2001: The Cavaliers 2002: The Cavaliers 2003: Phantom Regiment 2004: The Cavaliers 2005: The Cadets 2006: The Cavaliers 2007: The Cadets 2008: Phantom Regiment 2009: Blue Devils 2010: The Cavaliers 2011: The Cadets 2012: Blue Devils 2013: Caroline Crown 2014: Bluecoats 2015: Carolina Crown 2016: Bluecoats 2017: Santa Clara Vanguard 2018: Santa Clara Vanguard 2019: Bluecoats
  2. It's especially disconcerting to think about this possibly happening. Especially due to the fact that young adults who would have aged out this year (2020) were just awarded a "bonus" year to finish their drum corps careers, and they may end up losing a chance to perform at all if their corps can't afford to go on tour next year. It makes me wonder – would these members be granted a spot somewhere else if they still wanted to age out? 🤔 It's certainly a conundrum and definitely not the most important thing to worry about right now. But the potential snowball effect of this is a little demoralizing. This all comes down to the importance of supporting the corps as much as we can (another thread, I know). Hoping for the best possible 2021 season.
  3. I could have used my words much more wisely. Forgive my careless rambling. 17 is young but he will have graduated high school by the time the summer 2021 tour starts. I don't believe that's too young for WC.
  4. What I read was anyone who had a contract for 2020 would be guaranteed a spot in 2021. Not just age-outs.
  5. This! And this is why I'm becoming more active on these boards as of late. This topic is now at the forefront of my mind going into 2021 due to the fact that my youngest son, and the only other musician in the family, who is 16 (will be 17 in summer '21) planned to march with a world class corps next year, and both of us are still hopeful it can happen. As we have been following these events closely, we are now met with an odd predicament: Will there be enough spots open in 2021 for my son to audition for a corps if most members who would have marched this year are automatically guaranteed a spot for 2021? I completely understand the difficult situation we are in. But my son is a strong trumpet player, has dreams of marching drum corps and following in my footsteps. What if he is good enough to get a spot, but is turned away because the roster is already "filled" based on "last year's auditions"? Are corps doing this guaranteed rollover now going to say to anyone who had hoped to march in 2021, "We only have "X" number of spots available due to the 2020 carryover" ? Or "I'm sorry but we won't have any trumpet auditions this year because we already have all 25 from 2020 returning". Are there any other parents of hopeful soon-to-be members who share concerns like these? I know that 'it is what it is', but it's going to be difficult to explain this to my son if, in fact, he is unable to even audition for the corps he wants to march with if there aren't any spots available.
  6. Isn't this already happening in 2021 for anyone who would have aged out in 2020? If all of this year's bonus age-outs (22yo) march next year (23yo) then are you implying they should forego their 'bonus' bonus year an move on with their life instead?
  7. I was just having a chat with a friend who works with WGI and does design work for indoor groups, and he brought up an interesting question. Why not use this as an opportunity to permanently extend the age-out eligibility to 22 (or 23 during the summer competition)? This will obviously not go over well with some people on here, but under the circumstances, it might make the most sense in order to avoid any confusion if/when it's reverted in 2022. Thoughts?
  8. Since this news is literally hot off the press as of this reply, do we know if there's a plan in place for how to handle this next year? Do they only allow age-outs who were already contracted to march in 2020? What if 100+ 22/23 year olds show up to audition for a corps next year? Is that fair for everyone involved? What if they were a bubble age-out or an age-out who was cut but close to a position and had an extra 9 months to practice/get better? 🤔 Etc. You know where this is going. Forgive the 20 questions. This is my brain on 2 weeks of isolation with my family and I don't even know what day it is. 😅
  9. There’s been a lot of talk regarding whether or not the season will or should be canceled. But what happens if a large percentage of the members themselves (or their parents) decide they (or their kids) will not participate in drum corps this summer? A lot can change in just a couple days but what happens members decide to bail at the last minute, regardless of contracts? I wholeheartedly believe this will pass and eventually become a distant memory — story time for our grandkids and new additions to grade school history books. But as we live through this today, it would behoove us all to also consider the possibility that some kids or parents will decide to not participate in 2020 under the circumstances which could greatly impact the decisions that are being made and discussed right now. any thoughts?
  10. Maybe something didin't click between Anthony and the rest of the staff or the director. Who knows? The reason is likely not going to be something that is ever made public on dcp. Coulda been the usual reason these things happen, though... "creative differences". It never means anyone was "bad". Just that the chemistry wasn't right.
  11. Ten years ago, the Bluecoats made history by breaking into the top 6 for the first time. Tonight, they are in the top TWO. What an incredible performance and show. Go Bloooooo!!!
  12. Ah ok. Well, you know how these things can go... people like to exaggerate things at times. I was just repeating the words I heard, but heard the same from several people. I always have to remember to take anything I hear second or third hand with a grain of salt. However, I still wouldn't think choosing mr. wiles would have been a "better" choice that Rogers, especially considering the circumstances surrounding whatever happened last summer with him. Apologies for my repeating an exaggerated statement about that. I have very limited experience with both of those mentioned designers, but what I saw that Rogers did for Troopers for the few(?) years he designed for them, he definitely is writing much better stuff than he did in 1994. By the way, why are we comparing drill someone did 18 years ago to today? I may be 20 years removed from the activity but how does a drill someone wrote that long ago have anything to do with 2012? My last year was 1992 and from what I heard, Rogers was one of several designers who had a hand in the 1992 Cavies show. Mr. Brubaker was still with us that year but I heard there were about 3 or 4 people who had a hand in helping out when he got sick. And didn't Rogers also write the 1993 show? I didn't find that show particularly appealing, but the drill wasn't terrible. Nor was the 1994 drill. I wish I knew more about drill to make a better assessment on this whole subject but seeing that the Cavies went with an alumni and former staff member/caption head, I don't see how they could go wrong with their choice. Cavaliers shows are hit or miss with me but have always loved their style of visual designs.
  13. that's exactly what cavies should do. hire a guy who has a meltdown and resigns midway through last summer at Bluecoats. and from what I understand it was Rogers that bailed them out of that debacle. good call man.
