  1. Just a reminder: the 2021 DCI's Performers Showcase deadline for registration AND video entry is in two weeks! August 1st at 11:59 PM PST. This is open to ANYONE, ANYWHERE, on ANY INSTRUMENT! No corps affiliation needed. You got talent? We want to see it! Go to dci.org/showcase for rules and registration. (Spread the word!)
  2. Maybe the over 22 vocal? :# We did have one entry in 2018 who did a sort of 'slam' poetry reading.
  3. Hey! Wanted to put up a reminder that DCI's Performers Showcase (I&E) early bird special ends tomorrow July 1st. The cool thing you can pay now, save some money and turn in your video later, before August 1st. A couple of other changes: it's now open to everyone, everywhere, with virtually any talent. There are categories in String, Piano, Electronics, and even World Music. (Bagpipes anyone?) This opens the field to people of any age or country to participate. And no affiliation required. I'm keen on seeing corps staff create their own virtual ensembles. Or past I&E winners reclaim their crown in the over 22 category. You can see all the information here: dci.org/showcase And sign up here: https://dci.formstack.com/forms/2021_performers_showcase
  4. That humor. That connoisseur of all things pageantry. The smile and friendship. The wisdom and snark. I first met Mike as he performed his hysterical rendition of Karnac (renamed Boo-nac) at a Drum Corps World party. 26 years later, through decades of working side-by-side for DCI, we chatted and mourned the loss of the season over the phone this past summer. And now I mourn your passing. You were one-of-a-kind, Mike. And we all loved you for it. You will be missed: your expansive knowledge, quirky humor, and, of course the dedicated passion.
  5. Thanks, guys! Great job. Almost felt like I was there. *internal visuals* Christina
  6. "Triumph of Time" by Peter Graham Don't know if this has been brought up but wow. For Crossmen or Bue Devils for the jazzy feel. This is the full version of the piece (18:14 minutes) Performed here from a brass band championship in Belgium. (with trombones!) Love that the video is by Evil Penguin Productions. https://www.youtube.com/embed/xk4TCmwFbZ0 And here is Black Dyke Band with the world premier of the piece. Just a taste Looks like more percussion. And it's only the last part (3:39 minutes). https://www.youtube.com/embed/qJgaRYlTLAQ

  11. Yeah - we tried four times to get Myron into the HoF. He was so humble and just so grateful for the outpouring of support each time. That's what makes it so poignant that it came too late for him to appreciate this moment. Good call on these. I would add Bobby Hoffman for the 70s and Steve Brubaker to the 80s. Hmmm...current ones? I'm a fan of Peter Weber (SCV), Sylvester/Sacktig (Cadets), Ron Hardin (Crown), and Sly Sybilski (Blue Knights) work.
  12. A wonderful class will be inducted this year into the DCI Hall of Fame! Myron Rosander - Visual Designer, Santa Clara Vanguard Denise Bonfiglio - Color Guard Instructor, Staff Coordinator Frank Dorritie - Brass Instructor and Arranger, Audio Producer Dan Farrell - Program Coordinator, Phantom Regiment I am rather partial to Myron's inclusion: saddened that it will happen posthumously, but grateful that his name will be remembered in the activity. As Ron Hardin said: "Myron, as a man, was one of the most humble, altruistic people I knew." Many people who wrote letters in support of his nomination - which sadly could not be included due to space limitations - spoke of his sheer dedication to not only his craft but the members of the corps he worked with including: Santa Clara Vanguard, Phantom Regiment, Madison Scouts, Mandarins, Seattle Cascades, Blue Stars, and Vanguard Cadets. So happy for the other inductees. And how cool is it that Frank - who wrote a wonderful article on DCP about Myron - will be included in that company. And Denise - "You go, girl!" With much love to all!
  13. Those in attendance: Be sure to check out BK's 'wispy' s-rifles toward the end. Great visual effect.
  14. Thanks for the review! Just to add - mind blown when BDB started playing "I am the Doctor" from Doctor Who. So fits the concept (Prismatic) and Murray Gold's music work for corps charts. Also, congrats to Nick, the guest snare drummer, who fulfilled his dream of being part of the BD line that day. Finally - lush is an understatement for "Children Will Listen." I can see this being the ballad of the season. With their K-Pop number being an audience participation number as the guard pulls fresh pop/hip hop dance moves. Mav...off to figure out K-Pop
  15. A couple of comments: First, congratulations Madison! Wonderfully entertaining moment with spine tingling sounds. Next, welcome back cymbals! You are definitely back where you belong. I counted 8 - were there more? Finally, did I spot a bass drum stick flying in the air at the end of the concert piece? Quite the unexpected but joyful surprise. What a great way to spend Thanksgiving. Cheers! Mav
  16. Just some highlights off the top of my head: All the corps shows looked completed - although all shows looked like more could be added. Santa Clara Big Band sponsored by SCV played some cool jazz in their premier performance. Most were alums including the set drummer who marched Cadets. The wind was brutal for most of the guard - but only a few drops. Blue Devils B - wow. Very impressed with this high energy show. Their show now has street lamps which move around the field. I wonder if they will add illumination like BDA has in their spotlight props. Vanguard Cadets have one of the most beautiful guard uniforms, both of them. (They pull off the first one to reveal a gold tops). The story line is engaging as we following a couple on their journey. The green metallic silks at the end are brilliant both literally and design-wise. Very impressed with Mandarins' brass both sound and visuals. Real pristine horn 'snaps'. Ballads: Crossmen have an amazing ballad along with Blue Knights. Crossmen's soloist really nailed it last night. Crossmen's show is so engaging - the mix of Caravan and Carmen is cleverly written. Their 'rock out' section had the audience buzzing. Blue Knights show grows on me every time I see it. The story is intriguing, different, without being maudlin. We know now where Vanguard's yell is located in the show (near the end). Wondering if there was a way to keep the deep shadow cast by their backfield conductor onto the large 50-yard line prop. Also, their opening impact - that WALL of sound - could peel paint. What a moment…trombones et. al.! Time & Content: Loved the early start and early ending, but disappointed that we didn't get an encore or at least "Clowns". Lots of SCV alumni in the audience who would have enjoyed that. Full house - I heard they actually had to stop selling tickets as there wasn't enough room. Great intimate venue, though higher seating could have provided better viewing for drills. (I was in the last row and couldn't see the formations.) Overall a wonderful night. With only six corps, it was not too long and just right for the older and younger sets.
  17. Brent Crocker is announcing. And the national anthem was performed by Vanguard alumni. On deck? Blue Devils B.
  18. Did not know Santa Clara had a big band: Santa Clara Big Band They are performing now for the very first time and are sponsored by Santa Clara Vanguard.
  19. Three generations of drum corps ladies will be in attendance! I'll be there with my daughter Emily and granddaughter Lilly. (Pic from last year. Don't you love the old school uni?) Look forward to seeing the changes and completed ending.

  21. Exciting news not only about JW (excellent choice, btw) but Tom Andrews. Tom actually created the San Jose Raiders WGI dynasty from nearly nothing. At one time, the organization had nearly 100 performers in four winter guard categories: World, Open, A, and Novice. Always cutting edge or innovative shows.
