  1. Before anyone gets a wrong idea, there never was an under 21 rule far as DCA was concerned. Some corps had a policy of 21 or over but that varied by corps. Westshoremen opened the gates wide to minors when they reformed in 1974. That's how I started at the grand old age of 16. And heavens knows Central PA had a bunch of 'Senior' corps at the time but no 'Juniors'. So if we wanted to do corps it was either go 'Senior' or drive a scary stretch of I-81 to do Class A Belvederes/Black Diamond Regiment in Schuykill County. Edit: Just see Tom lives in Doylestown... LOL as my sister is a Delaware Valley College grad.
  2. Wow, my last day of playing a horn on the competition field. Thanks to both of you. Now having said that... Misprint in Westshoremens horn execution scores for Finals. #2 has 1.6 instead of 11.6, the average is OK but placement should be 8th. Man did these breakdowns jump around.... Our horn line must have peaked at Prelims and one side kinda sucked that evening. Wonder which horn judge did which side of the field.
  3. There used to be a Jr Buccaneers out of Hamburg, PA but no idea if they were affiliated with the Sr corps. Back when the Muchachos were around, Cabs and Sky had a 21 years old or older membership rule (not sure if 100% followed). They did this because they could still field a full corps with over 21ers. Today I don't think any All-Age/Sr corps could field a full sized corps without allowing people below the "age out" age. And man would the Buccs be gutted if they were 22 and older. :(
  4. Just watched the clip over lunch..... Oh my... Some 50 year olds DO get better with age.... (Gotta keep reminding myself of that. :sshh: ) Jami: Thanks, not surpised but good to know for sure Jim: Trying very hard NOT to draw that mental image.
  5. <turning on Chico Marx voice> "Hypothetical... Ain't that what the doctor uses to give you a shot... You know, a hypothetical needle" Since you responded Jami... Any rough idea of percentage of Buccs still elegible for Jr corps? Jes' tryin' to keep up on things and know there were a bunch on minor Buccs back in my day.
  6. Reading who? ^0^ :P (Just getting ready to play some early DCA on my headphones. ). Don't know enough about Div I to know how the Buccs would be received by the judges. No amps but a clean, complex show that shows why they are the repeat Champs. Heh, park 'n bark it ain't. B) Just glad a DCI fan likes one of my old DCA rivals... :)
  7. Asked a while back what would happen if a corps did an old style non-pit (aka "if you play it, you have to carry it") show. Bunch of responses said that a subsection of the shore sheets is for the pit. May not say "pit" on the sheet but think the term used was "pit effectiveness". Ooops just saw Adams response of : "Un-amped pits can not compete in Music Effect and Music Ensemble." Pretty sure that matches what I got before.
  8. And Jaysons going to mine Congrat to the grads and congrats to Bush for saluting them. And All Age means All Age. B)
  9. Oh my. :P Let us know Jeff, only thing that could keep me away is time conflicts and the ability to learn two shows at the same time. Wonder if Empire Statesmen still have their bubble machine from the 1980s.
  10. Sister was in the cast when the High School did it. Still can't get that #### Clam Bake song outta my head. ".. and them oysters we et(sic)...." :sshh: My dad slept thru half of it so he enjoyed it. <Turning on Comic Book Guy voice> ...most depressing musical ever..... Oh yeah, Never Walk is also corps song of Hanover Lancers parade corps and is our closer for stand stills. Great song at parade or stand still tempo.
  11. Just as background where I got this idea from (and without giving my opinion)..... One DCPer stated while back that he only finds a few top DCI corps entertaining and does not pay attention or care about the rest. I just kept going with that idea to "only care about seeing good corps/shows" (and nuttin' else).....
  12. Figure I better throw in the choice descriptions from the other thread.... Audience - best shows are presented to the audience, number of corps active not an issue Members - more options to join a corps, or make it easier to join DC Activity - Drum Corps continues as a viable activity well into the future (IOW - it still exists) Other - have no idea what it could be but better throw it in
  13. Cool, thanks.... and never thought of instructors.... Back to remedial Internet Posting Jimbo.. Mods - please close the thread I started.....
  14. Edit - #### this was SUPPOSED to be a poll but ran into problems..... Fairly easy unless you've never really thought about it before. When you discuss or think about the directions corps has taken or when discussing corps future whos' side do you usually take? Noticed the differences in some threads so thought I'd bring it into the open. Quick description of choices... Audience - best shows are presented to the audience, number of corps active not an issue Members - more options to join a corps, or make it easier to join DC Activity - Drum Corps continues as a viable activity well into the future (IOW - it still exists) Other - have no idea what it could be but better throw it in I side with the members no matter how good or bad the corps is. I started with a rebuilding corps that sucked and ended coming in 6th at DCA. Know first hand coming in last (did it enough times) beats the stuffin' outta no performing at all. Feel we should have more corps so more people can participate.
  15. Agree here and with GGarett on the changes to corps over my decades of following. And feel the changes are part of the magic being lost to some people. Back in the day part of the excitment and fun was following corps with their different styles. You kind of knew what style the corps would do but wondered how and what they would present. If you didn't like 'Corps A' style usually the next corps would be more to your liking. And before someone squawks, it is harder to tell the difference in the styles today. Today the different styles aren't as different as the past and unless you follow very closely over the years the styles do seem to blend together. Does seem that tighter execution and more complicated shows have pushed uniqueness to the background. Sooooo, apples = different styles and oranges = execution/complicated (or is it the other way 'round :P ). Question is do you like one and not the other, like one more than the other, or both equally........
  16. singing (badly) "Tiny Bubbles in my Wine......" You do know Mr Tiny Bubbles himself (aka Don Ho) passed away last week. I'm bummed as we shared a birthday. There's another celebrity I share a B-Day with who is still around... kinda... last I heard... (Fidel Casto). Mahalo.... A Don Ho Tribute Show. B) Fran can supply the shirts. :P
  17. Just read a bit on this on NanciDs DC History blog. White Roses used to be Senior then changed to a Junior corps around 1964. When I marched in the mid 1970s it was back to the Senior world as they merged with the Hersey Chocolatiers for 1976. Only know the last bit because we competed against them in the RCA. Any history on the 76 (and 77?) merger corps is confusing and contradictory.
  18. Is that similar to band is 2000s or bands back in the 1980s? Haven't watched MB since my sister graduated in 1984 so have no idea what is being done today. (IMO) Gap was still there in mid 1980s but a lot smaller than the mid 1970s when I was in HS. And closing the gap ain't a surprise as HS bands in my area were hiring corps people as staff members since at least mid 1970s if not before. By 1980 almost all the top bands and lot of the not so top bands had corps influences. LOL, at my sisters last competition I got B-worded out by a band parent for yelling at some ex-corps mates who worked for another band. "You sould cheer for YOUR band". My response was "I cheer for MY friends". Then the drum tech for another band sat with us during their show 'cause I knew him from corps. Grumpy band mom turned around, saw us and --->
  19. Shazaam <$1 to Gomer Pyle> now they're idiots on both coasts.
  20. Thoughts out to Ray and his family as can't put it into words right now....
  21. And Boys of 76 Sr corps (Racine, WI) a year later. Now THERE'S a piece of trivia for ya.... (And I got the recording) Far as mallet instruments being "foreign" to corps I was told by a drum instructor "If it can be hit with a stick it is a percussion instrument. That includes snares, bass, tymps (when did they start being used in corps) and bells".
  22. Wow, love types of articles like this.. Three Sr corps within an hour drive of my hometown (Westshore, Chocolatiers, Hanover) and guessing York White Roses had just folded as they are not listed. Plus Milton Keystoners, Yankee Rebels, Buccs, Emmaus, Archie and Reilly within a two or so hour drive. Wow, just wow...
  23. Whadda wearing for unis Bill?? ^0^ I hoping something loud, red and loose fitting, circa 1977...
  24. Blue Rock Jr Corps early 1970s did Baby Elephant Walk that started with a contra doing an elephant call the same way. Haven't heard a recording yet but told it will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. And the guy who did it, Chuck Quackenbush(sp?) is still around as he was at Harrisburg last weekend for the Serenade in Brass standstill show. And Sunrisers (yeah I know Sr corps) had a contra do a closing run on Ol Man River in mid 70s. Think it's on a mid-season recording and has a rrrrrriiipp tone that only low brass can get across. <again>
  25. Great news you're back in the pulpit Jeff as you're in my prayers with a lot of other people recently. Some of my extended family members have had health problems with slow recoveries over the last few years and sounds like your attitude is really helping. Next year I'll have to stop by and introduce myself. I remembered what you wrote in the Westshore thread but did not bring it up here as it is part of your personal life. Just having some fun with you and Einstein. Oh yeah, as a 3rd Bari I don't have fun playing high.... I have fun playing low and LOUD. B)
