I LOVED the first 2/3 of the 1986 show. On The Waterfront was driving and intense. Not sure what they were trying to accomplish with the closer though.
Per the dci.org writeup for their "Spotlight of the Week" feature for this show:
"Originally, word among drum corps fans was the rest of the show was going to be Bernstein's "Prelude, Fugue and Riffs." However, that piece was put on hold until the corps' 1991 show and was replaced with "Christopher Street" from Bernstein's score to the musical, "Wonderful Town," the 1953 Broadway production that won five Tony Awards."
It was a definite pivot from the first 2/3...

This show is on my list of faves - saw a lot of them that year b/c I was marching with 2-7. Just a fun show to watch and listen to.
Other shows on my list (regardless of how they fared competitively or where they COULD have finished "if only"...):
2015 - Power of 10: so much of it was appealing and very well done
2013 - Side by Side: loved the design idea - imagery, staging, movement
2011 - Between Angels and Demons: just spectacular, may be my favorite 'recent' show of theirs
1992 - To Tame the Perilous Skies - so well conceived and executed
1986 - the outlier for a lot of people, but I simply adored this show, especially the fast-paced portion with the fabric "frames" weaving amongst the rest of the corps.

It’s on YouTube. Remove if not permitted. Never much thought about Garfield until I saw this and I was mesmerized every year afterwards.

The Oprah tarp and saggy Capitol building? Lol the show was about Presidents. The President only goes to the Capitol building once a year. Maybe they were out of saggy White House tarps. Oh and the stage where section 140 could see nothing but the pit. Fun stuff.

Yes, it was. I had a sold rule of not drinking alcohol in the hot sun but my friends didn’t. I almost felt sorry for them. Almost.
I was 18 that summer and my Dad bought one for me; how could I refuse? A lot of water was also consumed as I recall...

McGill stadium in Montreal had old splintery benches like that.
...but they DID have Labatt's 50 for sale in the concession stands...and the drinking age at the time was 18...and prelims in '81 was very sunny and hot...

The first time you saw 1996 BD. Club Blue, Gangster Chronicle. Tell me you didn’t jump in your seat on that first hit!
Ok here’s an obscure one. 1978 27th Lancers. If I remember correctly they started at the corner of the field and the first move (with the color guard out front) was a “head chopper”. Rifle toss / flags sweep over the heads of the rifles as the rifles are still in the air. Hoo boy that impressed my teenage self!!
Not the best angle for the start but here you go:

"Kids and life" started happening after the '92 season, so "live" viewings disappeared for essentially all of the 90s and 00s...shows that I REALLY wish to have seen live?
- '96 Phantom and BD, Finals
- '99 SCV and BD, Finals
- '03 SCV (watching the video just gives me such cool, powerful vibes)
- '08 Phantom and BD, Finals
- '09 SCV
- '11 Phantom (they were rained out at the Massillon show, but got to see SCV)
- '22 Troopers
Shows that I'm REALLY thankful for HAVING seen live? Too many to count, but:
- Every Finals from '74 to '82 (marched '75 and '82 so only saw parts)
- Every SCV show from '74 to '92

Hopefully their budget has been limited enough this year that the sound system and electronic instruments had to be cut and props scaled way back. It’s time for today’s DCI fans to see and hear what Old School SCV can do in a new era.

That was quite a night in Madison. An embarrassment of riches.
Ahh, 1987! I was a grad student at Michigan State. Got it in my mind to "just drive up to Madison to go to Finals"...fortunately, one of my friends grew up near Madison (he went to U-W undergrad) and his family still lived there and offered overnight lodging. I drive up, find a spot to park on a side street somewhat near the stadium, and on my way up to the stadium find someone selling a single ticket. I vividly remember all of the above and attending the show, but for the life of me can't remember where I was sitting 😂

I would like:
- a device that allows me to shrink by 50% any big pickup truck that, when parked, extends two feet into the lot or garage lane,
- all vehicles programmed so that a turn cannot be made unless turn signals are used an appropriate distance in advance,
- to obtain that college minor required to understand how DCI (especially Friends of DCI) makes Lucas Oil seat assignments,
- AI-generated labels for DCP posters, such as "Pretend Lawyer" (or maybe "Plays a Lawyer on Social Media"),
- to have my windows cleaned by the next five people claiming props are the reason drum corps have financial problems.
I used to dream about having a car that had either 1) a vehicle-sized pancake flipper that could be deployed to "remove" the car ahead of you, or 2) some type of grappling arrangement whereby the car ahead of you could be lifted up and over your car and placed on the road behind you...

I think it was 86 that the Cadets had a very small color guard. That was a strange show imho.
I've always REALLY liked their '86 show. The whole middle part with the "ribbon boxes" that moved around / highlighted / wove through the rest of the corps was fantastic.

yeah. i was up at 6:45, ate, got the 6th grader on the bus at 8:03, got Dunkin, logged in to work, so far have made about 22 calls and got about 30 mailers ready to go, read and or replied to probably 45 emails, fought with an underwriter, conferred on marketing strategy with my boss, sent regards to a title company since i can't make their annual holiday party due to a wedding commitment this weekend, triple checked the work calendar for the afternoon, confirmed the garage door company is coming out tomorrow to replace the broken spring, chatted quick with the wife as she travelled between schools, and am now contemplating what leftovers to eat for lunch.
need an update later?
If it's something good we'd all appreciate a pic...😎

I love going to Benedictine. The Bavarian Lodge is right down Ogden, too.
Wow, you were in Finleyville in 74. Why did I miss that in your signature? I remember Dave Hill (rest in peace) telling me that he worked with your brass.
Dave was a great guy. I was in the cadet corps in '74 which was - by and large - "absorbed" into the main corps starting in '75.
