There are all sorts of factors that go into it, like retaining staff (that the members like), designing a quality show, providing an enjoyable experience for the members, etc. But mostly I think it's just a question of on-the-field success. Bones had its best retention in recent years after 2008, which was also their highest placement on the field since 2004. I don't think that's a coincidence. The people that stuck around after 2008 did so because they liked the staff, they thought the show design was decent, and had a good experience. But mostly they stuck around because the corps did well and they wanted to build on the progress of the previous year. Momentum cannot be underestimated (just look at Glassmen/Bluecoats/Crown/Blue Stars's meteoric rises to the top). But then the 2009 season went less-than-well, so those people jumped ship. You can talk about a lot of off-the-field things, which can certainly make people that might have stayed otherwise leave, but in order to keep people that would leave otherwise, you need to see some success score-wise.

At some point I counted the number of Bones vets that got medals (as in 1-3) this year and it was somewhere in the 15-20 range.

Crossmen Announce New Visual Coordinator
liebot replied to Xmen79's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Ed writes good, smart, effective, achievable drill. Aside from the standing around during the drum solo, 2001 is one of my favorite Xmen shows from a drill standpoint. This is a good move. -
Keep Those Horns Clean....Or Else

I'm assuming this is the same basic article? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...=1128&sc=tw -
Also, I don't think Goldberg, et. al. resigned. But I suppose that is the parlance of most leadership changes in today's society, so it kind of makes sense.

New arranger coming to the Crossmen!

The corps will miss Aaron Goldberg. He was the heart and soul of the Crossmen for so long. Thanks, Aaron, for years of dedication. -
New arranger coming to the Crossmen!

Whether people loved or hated your arrangements, I don't think anyone really thought they were mediocre. It'll be interesting to see if Crossmen can bring someone in that can write a show that's not average in the same way that so many other shows in the 12-24 range are. I really hope they can rise above the rest and design a show that's both interesting and achievable, but it will be a challenge, and I look forward to seeing how they take it on. -

Epiphany of the century. Don't really think it has that much bearing on this discussion though. People didn't like Guidry's arrangements. He is leaving. These people are not upset about the change. -
You know drum corps is dying when.............
liebot replied to Glenn Loving's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
If they saw and didn't enjoy Crown, Bluecoats, Blue Stars, or Madison, they probably weren't going to enjoy a drum corps show anyway. -

You distinguish them by saying "This marching band participates in DCI, has a unique instrumentation - which you could then explain even further - and is not directly linked to any educational establishment such as a high school or college." Or if you wanted to be even simpler you could say "I'm going to go see a marching band that has decided to call itself a drum corps." Because that's really the only way to differentiate between the two. If I was a band director and decided to have a field band that featured two-valve G bugles, mylar drum heads, and no electronics or woodwinds, would it be considered a drum corps? What if I still wanted it to be called the East Sheboygan High School Marching Band? Would that be acceptable? I don't understand the confusion. Saying "I like rectangles that are squares" wouldn't really clarify anything to anyone if they didn't know which characteristics were exclusive to one or the other. -

Well, is drum corps not a band of marching musicians? I think it's fair to call them a marching band then. It's like the whole square/rectangle thing. Every drum corps is a marching band. Not every marching band is a drum corps. -

Somehow I knew this would turn into a "Kids these days. . ." shtick. Hey, look outside. I think there are some young people playing PSP on your lawn. Go shake your fist at them and yell. Take your dentures out first. The whole "old and weird and wrinkly looking thing" really freaks them out. -

Yes, that was sarcasm. I bore the brunt of the criticism, however. Trust me, I did. Edit: that old quote wasn't intentional, but it is amusing to see how much certain people were hyping the design team last year. . . -

I wish people involved with the Crossmen knew who you were. It would make my crusade of the past year seem less ridiculous and take some heat off of me. But they don't, so it's okay. I'm cool with them continuing to hate on me. bc i was clearly the only recent member to complain about this. . . -

Things I forgot: Boston's hop-step The pose Bass 5 holds forever in Bluecoats' show.

1. Crown's pre-show 2. SCV accel./drill craziness 3. Last 2-3 minutes of BD's show 4. Crown - Danzon 5. Crown - Enigma impact 6. Some part of Blue Stars' show where the hornline got on their knees, played a loud note and then slowly leaned back (pick one) 7. Bluecoats' Bari solo 8. Bluecoats' contra feature 9. Crown - Mahler 2 restatement at the end 10. Tuba fill-in during the opening "Slaughter" impact for Madison's show . . . . . . . 998. Crown's ending . . . . . . . 99999. "This is my rifle."

I'll say this, and not in reference to Star '93 because I never saw them live, but you should be wary of judging a color guard's attractiveness from the stands. A lot of them are fifty-yard fake-outs. Everyone's tan and skinny in the summer, so when someone says a guard "is hot" they often just mean that their uniforms are particularly flattering from the stands.
