In 2008 the Blue Devils got beaten by the Cavaliers at Allentown. This year is not quite the same.

Thoughts: - BD's show is, at times, a mess. There's simply too much going on for any amount of effect to be reasonably achieved. You can argue "complexity" all you want, but at some point, it just becomes mush. I understand the concept of multiple focal points, but I think at times BD just throws too much at you to really appreciate it. The opener and closer are excellent, but there are some parts in the middle that really lull because the effect that they're trying to achieve is so diluted by nonsense going on in the rest of the field. - I find it hilarious that the biggest crowd response the Cavaliers get is when they do push-ups on the field. This is the ultimate confirmation, for me at least, that Cavaliers shows are designed to the lowest common denominator. No real drum corps fan in their right mind would watch a hornline chant and do some push-ups on the field and be blown away by how "cool" the things they're doing are. It's not difficult and it's not really interesting. The rest of their show isn't bad, but this moment is just absurd to me. - Bluecoats and Crown have great shows. They are very enjoyable to me.

Did you miss the whole end of the show? I haven't seen anyone this year playing while doing more difficult drill. While I can understand your complaints about an inaccessible music book and too much going on on the field (which I think are legitimate critiques. . . I don't understand why people get so up in arms about this type of stuff), the quoted part is just absurd.

Hmm, that probably would have been fun. Oh well, missed opportunities. You're definitely right about the "so good at everything they do" part though. Immaculate performance and incredible energy at all times.

Sweet.

Blue Stars show was cool. Lots of crowd/bando-friendly moments, and the horn line is loud. First time seeing BD's show live. Watched them rehearse today as well. They're good. Very good. Definitely cleaner than anyone else, and they sell the #### out of their show. That said, there are moments in it where there's just too much going on, both musically and visually, and everything gets muddled. That's not to say that anything they're doing is made, and sometimes simultaneous movement is good, but at some point it just becomes clutter, which I think happens sometimes. That said, the end of their show is freaking bad***. Whole horn line jazz running while playing ff. Excellent. Oh, and a baritone came in really early and really loudly during the isolated stabs in the opener after they face the mirrors in the two arcs. Most of the crowd was dumb so they didn't notice, but it was baaaaaaaad.

F*** it. I don't care what place they come in. This is the best DCI show I've seen live since. . . ever? You really can't say enough about their hornline sound. Even if they end up in fourth or fifth, this will be a show that I will listen to and watch for the rest of my life. Thank you, Crown, for giving the fans this ridiculous music book and show.

Explain the Stories Behind These 2010 Shows

Haven't seen SCV so I can't really comment. BD's show seems to be pretty much "f***ing mirrors, how do they work?" and nothing more. Again, though, I haven't seen their show live, so I can't really comment. -

So how does the show tell the story of "Metropolis?" -

Interesting. Not sure I would have gleaned that from what was on the field. -

No, nor do they really need a theme. My point is just that most corps' themes and stories are so half-baked and ill-conceived that they don't make the show more enjoyable to anyone except for the most small-minded, easily deluded fans in the audience. Just play some music and move around on the field. Who gives a **** what your show is about? -
Are the judges anti-Spirit or what?
liebot replied to Carolina09Spirit's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Admitting that you're biased is cool and all, but it doesn't make your opinion any more valid. Maybe not everyone else in the world shares the same bias that you do? Maybe some of those people are judges? -
Ok, I could probably deal with that.

Maybe I'm late to this whole sentiment, but wouldn't you be really ###### off if a person sitting next to/in front of you at a show was on their phone posting twitter updates the whole time? What happened to just enjoying moments and experiences without having to provide play-by-play to some invisible audience the whole time? /b****iness

Meh, I guess I just disagree, but having watched a recent performance video, it just seems like the corps isn't quite maxing out the show yet. The arrangements are solid, they're just not being sold. The only real problem is that the arrangements might be slightly over the hornline's head, but I think it's a pretty entertaining book.

What beer goes best with drum corps?
liebot replied to kevingamin's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Word. There's no need to preach. Beer is good. Has anyone mentioned Left Hand Milk Stout yet? If not, they should have. -
What's going on with Crossmen?

I expect that the number of Bones vets' receiving medals this year will be ~10-15. -

Soooo, now the recaps say that BK had an 8.6 penalty and came in behind Crossmen. Are they trying to make up for last night when BK 2.7-pointed Boston when they actually tied, or does someone just like f***ing with BK's scores? -
No thanks. Here's a picture of a cat trying to eat a dog: Enjoy.

Bizarre Prediction Thread

cf. Cadets 2009 - drum line falls/massive disasters only put you in 7th in drums, and keep you in the same place you were in overall on Friday night. -
I hate the Cavaliers and every show they have ever put on a football field (except maybe 04). That comment served no purpose except to counterbalance the unnecessary, irrelevant BD-bashing with some equally irrelevant, unnecessary Cavaliers bashing. See ya later.
