My memory is still pretty good and I have been thinking of what our schedule was like in the 1970's. In the summer we did two days of rehearsal (Tuesday and Thursday). Saturday morning we would meet at the parking lot (where we practiced) load up the buses and go to the show. These shows were either in NY, PA, Ontario (Canada) sometimes OH. We'd get to the show and maybe rehearse at a field. Get dressed and do the show and then return home. It worked back then. NOw I know there were more corps and shows so today it's different.
The NHL has teams put in three regions...maybe DCI and DCA can do something similar. I think the bigger issue is WHO can put on a show these days?

The geographical center of the activity is, theoretically, Indiana. In the case of any combined shows, it may shift to PA, or anywhere within a day's drive of say, Jersey City. (How ironic.)
There may be 3 discrete regions for a while, or even 4. Any "National Title" might be determined by stats and a panel of experts, without a "championship" event.
This, of course, would be temporary, and we would eventually "return to our regularly scheduled program".
"Think globally. Act locally." may become the new mantra.

Maybe.....Corps should bring everyone in 2 weeks before camp so that they can quarantine at the camp site. Keep track of temps daily and make sure everyone is healthy before the camp starts. Continue monitoring throughout camp and every day into the season.
However, will school districts around the country allow outside groups into their facilities? If I can't have a camp in my school for 2 days for my students then my district sure won't let a drum corps come to our facility!
Fauci tells the public that even if you get the vaccine you should still stay masked up until (at least 2022). So I think many school districts will say NO to outside groups using their schools AND facilities!

I know I sound like Mr. Negative but just trying to be realistic.

Other question ..... Will members pay additional fees to tour IF corps have to pay extra for housing (maybe in hotels)?
Personally don't think that this year will be successful and any corps that does participate could lose money and potentially lose members if they get sick.

So weekend drum corps may be the best way to keep the activity active until we get back to normal...if we ever will.
-
With all that has transpired the past year...Is it possible, to save the activity, to go back to the way contests were done in the 1970's? Local/regional shows from June to end of July and then a 10-14 day tour leading up to DCI Championships.
Is there still a DCI East/West/MidWest/etc? Maybe that would help
-
I would suggest that DCI/Corps find out the extra charge school districts will charge for extra cleaners to disinfect and spray. Our district is constantly spraying after school and on weekends and I believe the costs are high.

The End of DCI?
Will DCI eventually give over total control to Varsity?
If so, then do rules change to what THEY want or what the Corps want? My guess is that it will be ALL Varsity!
DCI with $0 is probably going to hand it over right?
What corps are in bed with Varsity already?
Just a few question!

I was just speaking on the US Open in Marion.

I think going back a bit farther to 1971 as the start of the Golden Age. 1972 was an amazing US Open in all 3 classes!!!!

All GREAT choices!!!!
Some Non-Finalist Favorites in no particular order!
1970s & 1980s Boston Crusaders (it is stunning to think they did not make finals until 1999!)
New Jersey Saints 1977 - not like they were going to make finals but it is a spirited and enjoyable performance( I was surprised to see that the 1977 UOEC Championships audio is not on YouTube)
Avante Garde NY - some quality entertaining performances in late 70s early 80s
1980 Long Island Kingsmen - So I never actually saw this group but heard from many of my drum corps friends that they were a strong up and coming corps. I went on YouTube and there is a 7 second clip !!?? Not much to go on, but I will throw them on here by reputation.
Memphis Blues Brass Band - a group that had a lot of potential and played some great music!
Royal Brigade - another group from the East Coast that had some strong performances.
Offensive Lions - a great Canadian corps that had their own flair with show design. Check out their 1978 opener of American Overture.
Ventures & Les Chatelaines - If you ever thought girls were not as tough as boys then you clearly never saw these All-Girl groups. I remember walking through the parking lot after a show and hearing the gnashing of teeth and expletives of some top 20 corps that lost to them in brass. Impressive!
Mighty Liberators - I saw this group at the 1977 US Open Class A prelims and I know it may not have been the most polished performance, but those performers cranked out as much energy as some top 12 corps. They definitely left it all on the field and I remember the early afternoon crowd going crazy.
Academie Muscale - some eye opening impressive moments in brass playing with this group. I remember hearing them play John Williams Olympic Fanfare and my jaw dropping when they hit the double tongue section.
Cool stuff!

Saves on travel but the excitement of a live competition is gone.

MAYBE (and I'm not sure it was an ego thing.
DCI starts up and we lose how many corps? I know St. Joe's of Batavia folded and probably because most of the members aged out (my guess). What about others?

"...non working teachers can eat and stay on zoom."
Permit me to help decode something here. I must assume this comment is meant in all sincerity, but I would point out that teachers are not on vacation, eating bon-bons and watching The Simpsons.
Virtually all of them are continuing to do their jobs, remotely, with almost no administrative support. The vast majority of these people had to improvise like mad over the past several months to meet state-mandated specifications in the education code while inventing new ways to deliver curriculum as effectively as possible.
Their work loads have increased exponentially. While they are fortunate to still have jobs, to describe them as "non working" is to be tragically misinformed.
So V !ERY true!!!!
I do 2 jobs at once now. When I was home teaching from March to May, I taught theory and history because we didn't have the technology to do Virtual Choir which takes a lot more time to put together besides class time

I am 60, been teaching for 21 years. I am not depressed but seem to be stressed! I can't do a concert so I have to video a concert. The kids are not learning as quickly, we can't do a live Music Performance Assessment. So we just learn sight reading, some theory and sing as much as possible. It's not going to school anymore....it's going to work! Teaching face to face and also distance learning. It sucks! I hate it!!! Nothing I can do but my best!!!

This post is going nowhere LOL

Bridgemen 1976 was a gutsy move to go from traditional uni's to their hip banana coats and wide brim hats. Also the style of show was so very different than any one ever saw.
Add Velvet Knights with their "Cool" look and shows.

St. Joe's wasn't involved in DCI as the folded after the 1971 season.

I think breaking DCI into regions would be a great idea!
Northeast, South, Midwest and West
