  1. BD 93 always has a way of putting me in a great mood. -christopher
  2. Third... Yes, it’s a difficult issue, one that has us all up in arms. But what are we going to do with this information, organize a witch-hunt? "Burn them at the cross I say!!!" Get real folks. The current BOD is a majority of the same people responsible for the resurgence of this activity over the past 10 or so years. Had it not been for their dedication and hard work, God only knows if DCI would still be around. Its partially because of them that you have this message board and an activity to talk about. I am as old school as they come. I hate electronics, I hate b-flat instruments, I hate the fact that so much tradition has been swept away over the past 10 years, but these are the facts of life. Things change, people change, organizations change. But in their defense, people who run this show have many more years of experience managing non-profit organizations than you or I combined. I trust that they know what they are doing, and will make the best decision in the best interest of the activity. They love drum corps as much as you and I, and in some cases, more than any of us. They eat, sleep, dream about, and breath drum corps 24 hours a day. They are not only director, but almost all of them are vets as well. Jeff Fielder, for example, just gave up his career as a teacher to work with the Cavi's fulltime. He was the Cavi's drum major, and has guided the corps to an unprecedented run over the past ten years. He is 110% dedicated to this activity and the young men that become a part of the Cavalier family. Can you honestly tell me that he, or any of the other BoD's, are going make any decision that would knowingly harm the activity? Tell me why you believe they wouldn't give a tremendous amount of thought and insight into the issue before making such a vote. In Jeff's case, he has hundreds, if not thousands of people to answer to... alumni, parents, the Cavaliers BoD, the membership. Imagine that kind of pressure, that kind of responsibility... know tell me why he would make a decision to vote on a controversial issue that, in all fairness, he knows will not be the popular vote? The only logical answer I can come up with is that he, and the other board members (corps directors) see this has a critical decision that will advance the activity in years to come and create a stable, more competitive organization, along with a more creative palate for the corps and the designers. Do I like the idea... no. Do I support it? Not now. Do I have an open mind? Yes. Do I trust the current people in charge of running the activity? Heck yeah! And by the way, if the rule gets passed and a few years later we find out that it really was a bad idea... we can always rescind it. ::applauds:: -christopher
  3. ha ha lesson in bad decisions taaaaaaaake one... -christopher
  4. they don't just cut any kid to stay small. they cut kids who don't fit the classifications they want. what's the point in having 3 kids out there fumbling around having no clue what they're doing? those three kids won't boost GE, so cut em. and yeah, correct me if i'm wrong but didn't blue stars intentionally stay below 60 a couple years back to stay div 3? -christopher
  5. that's a very good valid point... but it's not for everyone. some people will march a middle tier div 2 corps for 7 years and love every day spent there learning tons about leadership, themselves, how to teach, family, etc... but some people will march 12 different corps trying to gain experience learning from as many different people as they can to become a well rounded teacher in the future... quite frankly the top corps have the top staffs in my opinion so maybe it's not all about the rings. or maybe someone will march 3 different corps and walk away from the actvity with 3 rings... experimentation is the key to life (don't do drugs) and all thats important in life is what makes you happy. if spending your precious few years in the activity trying to help a growing corps isn't for you, more power to you. learn as much as you can where ever you want. there is no rule that says "if you do drum corps you have to do it for this reason." what ever reason you march for is yours alone and isn't necessarily everyone elses, just the same as everything else in life. -christopher
  6. all i'm saying... is people don't watch the super bowl to hear about great lessons learned in pee wee foot ball.
  7. thank god... if it passed i wasn't going to march my age out. i haven't been doing indoor because i wanted to do drum corps... but ####, i could just march indoor if i wanted to hear synths all day.
  8. i've marched for a while... i'm pretty sure i've never been in a corps with 15 empty seats... where are the alternates going to sit? -christopher
  9. used em at phantom in 06. great duribility and excellent sound with the pearl carbon fiber. Very warm tone. Very similar to the evans bass heads only a better sound quality while still maintaining the pictch for a longer period of time. -christopher
  10. game on. found it. http://www.dci.org/media/theater.cfm?bctid=156434885 -christopher
  11. I think that was actually a visual rehearsal before a show if i'm not mistaken... -christopher
  12. watch lots throughout the summer, watch the show on finals. -christopher
  13. honestly, the deciding factor for me... arizona in august... nor cal in august... i pick norcal. -christopher
  14. out of curiousity, does the food truck still say newark, De? -christopher
  15. I go through that all the time... "you'll never make a dime marching down the 50" is the most common from my professors... tell that to ralph hardimon... jim cassella... michael gaines? hmm... weird right? but anyways, i'm right there with you, i started marching in high school and i know i wouldn't be in college if it wasn't for corps. some of the elderly folk we deal with in school are from a very closed minded time where there was one way to do things, and if you weren't doing that one thing with the same exact mindset as everyone else, you were completely wrong... there really is no reasoning with some people and it stinks... but all you can do is silently prove them wrong and laugh to yourself when they compliment you on something you learned in corps. -christopher
  16. they kinda didn't even move... the corps headquarters moved... but they've been rehearsing in the same state for... well... always... -christopher (ok ok, except for move ins...)
  17. it depends on where you march but i'm sure every corps has something at some level (maybe not traditional hazing) that first year members go through. Maybe limitations on what a rookie can do or can't do: BD bending the knees, getting your corps jacket, when you can wear your corps jacket, being an initiate, rookie talent night, an actual "initiation night", or even having to pay an extra 100 dollars at some corps for it being your first year... i would find it very hard to believe that there is any corps where 1st year members are held at the same level as everyone else... aside from that, i think the amount of hell you're put through depends on one's level of deuchebaggery. -christopher
  18. I'm fairly confident the crossmen have never gone inactive... they were disqualified from DCI for a summer for overage member before though. phantom went inactive in 65 from a fire, they reformed in 67 though. -christopher
  19. it would work great for an indoor line. using son et lumiere and inertiatic esp would be pretty sick with the isolated hits before inertiatic. there's a lot of great stuff in there... i've seen a couple indoor 311 shows... a drum corps 311 show would be pretty rediculous though -christopher
  20. yeah i started marching when i was 14, a freshman in high school. i missed out on a lot of stuff. but i also grew up quite a bit at a rapid pace. i certainly wouldn't be in college if it weren't for it. but i think 14 is a bit too young. i'd say if the kid's really gung-ho about it, go with 17. seven years is too long. a good solid 3'll do just fine. -christopher
  21. thanks a lot for all your help. -christopher
  22. i don't really know either i was checking out www.fromthepressbox.com and saw the caption recaps. it just boggles my mind. it would be like pioneer winning drums (no offense, they have a great percussion program) but it's just very unlikely. i'm just confused as how a corps could sweep every caption, then not exist on finals. -christopher
  23. alright, while i've been in the drum corps scene for about 10 years, my knowlege of the 80's is still very limited. I was checking out the 80's recaps and saw that crossmen won drums on prelims... while the full corps placed 21? I also noticed another year in the 80's that the blue coats won everything on prelims then didn't win a single caption on finals... was it the tick system? Was there some different way that they did finals week back then? please, enlighten the ignorant... (this guy) -christopher
