Would the longevity argument still work if Keith Potter and Leon May were still at Crown, or Gino and Colin never left Cadets? To me a HOF designer/instructor is a HOF designer/instructor. It only took JD Shaw and Michael Gaines 2 years to bring a title to SCV and Gaines did not even write the drill his first year.

Also if you look at BD, besides Chandler, Johnson and Glyde, everyone else in high positions have not been in those positions very long. At the same time, what BD does so well is cultivate their future leaders from inside the organization. Downey got to train his successor and still stick around as an advisor. I am sure whenever Scott Chandler retires, he will do the same.

Longevity can be a reason for BDs success, but its not the only reason. If adding Shaw and Gaines can win you a title in 2 years and adding all the names at BAC can bring you from 12th to 2nd in 4 seasons, then maybe its more about quality than longevity.

    Todd Ryan?

I think you can be a fan of a corps but not of the process or message. Haven't we seen this of many corps.

Yes, I agree with the above statement. And granted it is hard to discern tone from text on a screen, but my initial reaction was that the quoted person was not a fan of Jersey Surf.

I am a huge fan of Surf and feel they provide an experience that is missing in world class drumcorps at the moment. On the surface, it appears Surf is taking the  necessary steps to ensure the long term heath of the organization is strong. Maybe there is stuff going on behind the scenes I am not aware of, or maybe the original poster has some inside info that makes them aware of why the press release is a bunch of hogwash.

Regardless, I just want Surf to survive and keep providing a scaled down version of a world class experience for those in the north east that cannot deal with the time commitment of a Boston or Cadets. Go Surf!

They are a World Class Corps competing in  several Open Class shows. Questions are 1)  Are they getting any appearance fees for these shows?  2) Will DCI show their score separately from the Open Class scores?  With a move in date of July 1st.  it will be difficult to have a show ready by July 16th unless they hold several weekend camps before move ins.

Tour fees appear to be $4600  which makes Surfs statement  on "Total Cost of Participation" incorrect.   The entire announcement from Surf  and DCI is nothing more than them trying placate one individual.

Wow. Dude really isn't a fan of Jersey Surf.

Compared to loading the equipment truck (sorry, trucks), or field lining crew, is that really asking too much for an aspiring music educator?  They could actually get a tiny slice of relevant experience at the craft.

Your dues are 5000.00, oh and we are going to let the person standing next to you in the arc run sectionals.

Concerning the number of staff - once upon a time, each section of the corps had a member designated "section leader", who would take charge of rehearsal during sectionals or other times when there were not enough hired staff to cover every rehearsal block.  Now that so many marchers are music education majors, it seems surprising that we are not letting them apply their training in that same role.

Your dues are 5000.00, oh and make sure you run sectionals as well.

What a travesty of a schedule for the performing corps.  I’m sure someone thought this was a brilliant idea and if the corps gave their blessing, well…

How does this effect the performing corps? Once you have your performance time, you start building your schedule for the day. What is happening while a corps is warming up will have literally no impact on them whatsoever.

The Troopers beat the Blue Knights  by nearly a point (.8) at Allentown...but were almost a full point behind them last night. That's a nearly 2 point swing in one night. Did I miss something like penalties on either night that would account for that change in placement?

Blue Knights performed on Friday night in Allentown. There was a 90 minute weather delay where everyone was in a holding pattern waiting to see if the show would go on our not. Once the show started 90 minutes late, there was some pretty intense humidity with rain and lightning still in the area.

Troopers performed on Saturday, on schedule, with elevated humidity but an otherwise beautiful night. I think most of the groups that performed on Friday would admit they did not have a great run.

That its the difference between Allentown and Pittsburgh scores.

  8. I understand the issues and limitations of JBC. But as someone who waited 24 years to get back there, I had a blast this weekend. The bathroom situation is awful, the bleachers suck, parking is difficult, etc and I didn't care one bit. I can see if you attend Allentown annually how that stuff could get tiresome. I loved that i got to take my wife on her first trip to Allentown. We sat in row 2 between the 45 and 50, ate funnel cakes, watched Tony try to tell the PA announcer when to talk and not talk, got overwhelmed by Crowns hornline, and basically had what will be the best weekend of the year for me.

In Pittsburgh just one night later, when Troopers matched with BK, their score dropped a point and they fell behind BK, who they led at Allentown despite being on different nights.

Could it be environmental conditions, a bad run, or other causes? Of course. But it sure is curious...

I am confused. Are you saying placements should not change from night to night or show to show? If that its the case, why not have one show in the middle of the country on July 25 and then everyone go home. Save everyone money on gas and housing.

Blue Knights are not going to beat Crown. That its not possible given show design, staff, and talent level. But I fully expect the Troopers, Colts, Blue Knights, Crossmen tier to switch spots multiple times between tonight and Fri/Sat.

  10. My thoughts on BD vs BAC after seeing both in person last night.

Boston may be the best drumcorps on planet Earth from minutes 8-10 of their show. They are firing on all cylinders at that point. Everything around that chunk of time ( minutes 0-8, and the ending) never reaches the heights of the "closer" for lack of a better term. Although they are spectacular at all times, the pacing feels a little strange for lots of the show. The brass (which are mind glowingly good) go large chunks without playing. Transitions from section to section are good, but not as smooth/seamless as BD.

These are all nitpicks, but when you are talking about the top 1-2 percent the little things absolutely matter. I thought BAC was clearly closer to Bluecoats than BD last night. Could that change in a week? Possibly. It would be awesome to see a new champion in year 50. Unfortunately, the kids in BAC are performing the snot out of what they have, but I do not think their show will allow them to catch Devils.

Ultimately, I was the big winner last night, as I got to see both shows up close an personal. Can't wait to do it again tonight.
