  1. Every season I say that DCA corps cannot get any more closed as far as content on the internet and every year I'm proven wrong. One day, corps will just send in a video to a secret inbox to receive a score.
  2. I think that's correct. Spirit would have been the 2nd had they made it in. Cymbal lines started dying out quite a while ago. It runs in cycles if you think about it. We went from 10 snares to 7 and then back to 9. Tenors run in groups of 5 or 4. It really depends on the complexity of the front ensembles book. Now that we are layering electronics in with traditional mallet instruments and aux percussion, the front ensembles are growing. It's happening in both DCI and DCA. But if you love cymbal lines, look no further than WGI.
  3. I'm not so sure though. I show Cabs tied in guard and tops in brass. Bucs and Fusion tied for percussion and we haven't even factored in CV. It could be a good year for an "upset." We'll know in a week!
  4. I would hope so. Last year, they hit a 91.950 at the Southern Showdown. That show had a lot of "cool factor" to it but it also had some moments that didn't quite translate until a week later. I want to get a hold of a DCA Excel spreadsheet for my own tracking of captions etc. I guess I could build one, but that would require doing stuff that's almost like work on a weekend.
  5. We can only dream of such high caliber crowd entertainment from something other than the corps. You could also do some lot videos Jeff. Just remember to scream stuff like "THAT'S HOT! I'M HOT! HOLY #### I'M ON FIRE!"
  6. 27th and Troopers always had what my father called "Iconic" uniforms. I miss being able to identify a lot of the corps strictly by the look. But at the same time, what the MM's are doing now requires the shift so I understand it 100%.
  7. PR was FAR from the worst "offender" this year IMHO. I enjoyed their show tremendously once it was cleaned and got as good as it could get.
  8. Think of it this way...it would probably STILL be more comfortable than the 80's and earlier iterations of uniforms. I have no idea of how I survived (but I'm far more of a wimp when it comes to heat now.) I didn't connect to many of the shows this year that I felt were over the top in electronics and vertical staging. I also didn't love some of the musical selections in the top 16 corps. But I did (and always will,) try to find the good in every corps. I think tapping some WGI talent would be a good thing even if it's just in a consulting role.
  9. I'll be there next year either marching again (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL) or as a very interested spectator.
  10. I'm really, really, REALLLLLYYYYYY looking forward to seeing what CV can put out there from a score standpoint. As an alum, I love my corps and want them to perform well. But on a purely selfish note, I most of all would like them to take the whole #### thing.
  11. I'm sure one of the "Off-Topic" police will blow this thread up soon. But before they do: 1. I'm going to stream for the first time on my Windows 10 laptop so we'll see how it goes. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to tech so hopefully I'll be ok. 2. Windows 10 is the devil...straight up...the DEVIL. My work laptop has Windows 10, Office 365 suite, Articulate 360 and the full Adobe Creative Suite. What I do now more than anything is more akin to high end advertising than it is actual instructional design. It's starting to become more online courses than actual true classroom facilitation. I run my laptop in "god Mode" so I can bypass all the bloatware than comes even on business machines these days. I get a laptop refresh (i.e. a brand new craptastic Dell laptop) every 3 months because we've found that we tend to break the PC's pretty frequently between every day use and constant updates and constantly getting on and of planes with the #### things.
  12. Definitely good examples I would agree. I thought 2016 was a masterpiece in some ways. That show, IMHO, is still a showcase of design and easy to understand music that translates very well. If someone who had never seen DCI asked me what the difference between it and marching band is, I would probably pull that show out as one of the top 3 from a showcase perspective. There are certain shows that represent the best of what drum corps CAN be and for my part, they are spread out across several corps. For instance, 2010 PR for me captures emotion better than any show I've seen in 20 years. But that's just my opinion.
  13. I would suspect (but can't verify) that staff members who are leaving their 2019 corps have already begun to reach out to the rest of Open and World class about possible open positions. With the ever growing social media, it would only make sense.
  14. Very true. As many have said, it runs in phases. It's like so many other things...what's old is new again. Even in my own little cottage industry side business, I sell a LOT more "old-school" 60's and 70's style pool cues than I do stuff with a zillion tiny inlays made 90% on the big CNC mill. You gotta go with what makes you successful.
  15. I would tend to agree. Now how LONG would they stay "competitive" (which is a term that seems to vary widely here,) if they did that multiple times....that may be another thing altogether.
  16. Which has been my thought as well. However, I have been shot down multiple times on this forum for: 1. Suggesting that the aforementioned is true and 2. Even asking the question of "Is it possible." Granted I have thicker skin than most, but there are some on these forums that seem to believe that only their opinions are valid. Personally I think the props vs no props and how it impacts scoring is worth a proper discussion. But I'm just a drummer so maybe people don't read the words typed and just assume they say "dut dut dut huzgidda da-gock." /shrug
  17. If Windows 10, add 45 minutes for 3 restarts. If Mcafee installed, add 22 minutes for 14 annoying nag boxes to tell you about how your antivirus definitions are out of date and the world is ending. And don't forget if you have any Office products installed, they just did a HUGE patch of those so add like....2 hours. So Jim...log in at 4am, finals start at 6pm. You should just make it in time.
  18. So then it IS in fact curable. Gotcha LOL. I'll let Britt know as she doesn't understand yet the "Obsession with things that go honk and boom." (Granted this was at 3am when I woke up and decided to watch some random drum corps stuff.) She's been a good sport about going to shows and being absorbed into the collective as long as it doesn't interfere with her sleep cycle.
  19. We did at CV in '05 as well. We had plenty of equipment but the line wasn't clean until cuts started to happen. CV made places in the corps for anyone who wanted to march though even if it wasn't on their "instrument of choice."
  20. That was somewhat the approach of Corpsvets (now CV) back in the early 00's. It started out early as more of a "Did you used to march somewhere and miss it? Come march again!" and then became a recruiting platform to younger members a few years later. Younger staff (Leif Marwede for example) started to bring in younger members from groups they were teaching at the HS and college level and started the ball rolling. What CV has done to continue that is unclear to me beyond the front ensemble and battery. I know Romo brings in LOTS of kids and former DCI talent. Hopefully corps are taking advantage of situations like that and then expanding their connections THROUGH those folks to keep the recruiting up if that staff member moves on. I will say this as well. When I first approached CV in 2003 it was described to me by a member as basically a "Spirit of Atlanta alumni corps" by one of the members. And we did have a lot of vets from SOA, Southwind, Freelancers (oddly enough,) Cadets and Skyryders. The younger members were really recruited by their parents to come march. It was very much a family thing.
  21. Fran do you ever find yourself announcing Prelims and Finals in your head?
  22. I'll be teaching a class still so I will check in on Box 5 LOL. I'm changing positions sometime in the next 30 days at work so I'll get a lot more time this coming year to go to events.
  23. I'll buy you a beer if you wear a Waldo hat so we can spot you Jeff.
