  3. Awesome show (14 tenors in the opener) - but honestly - who would you have moved them ahead of? Just a good year that year. :) Mike
  4. Thank you for the review - always great to read a new perspective! :) Mike
  5. posted on behalf of Ted Striker OK I saw th Bluecoats with the new uniforms on Saturday, June 12th at Ridgewood High School in West Lafayette High School (about 10 minutes from Coshocton, OH). They rehearsed for about 3 hours with the new uniforms on (color guard obviously did not wear their 2004 outfits). I took a hand full of pictures, but David Glasgow asked the audience to not post the pictures anywhere on a computer or on the web until the Bluecoats performed at their home opener on June 17th with Stark Brass and the Trapani Big Band, which is a reasonable request. If the Bluecoats did not have the pictures posted by tomorrow, I will do my best to have them scanned in and posted tomorrow,,,,the pictures are slightly at a distance. However, since I can not log onto the Bluecoats site, they are probably updating as we speak. I can say the following of what I saw: 1. The uniform is basically the same, i.e., blue jacket (slightly darker) and strictly white pants. 2. The pants uniforms are a little more streamlined, jackets that is at the bottom. 3. Sleeves look different...gauntlets are darker. 4. Baldric is a tapered white one. 5. Helmet and plume remain the same!! Of the performance I can say this: 1. This is by and far the best guard I have seen this corps field and one of the best guards I have seen early on--they may finish top 3-4 in guard. 2. The entire musical package is much more demanding than anything they have ever had---and I am an alumnist. The drum book is much more technical than I have seen. There is a wonderful mellophone line at the end of the opener (a la Star 91) and the drill is very demanding there--they have had several ankle/foot injuries to vets because of the higher demand of movement. 3. The opening has a riff from (of all things) "In the Mood" and then goes into "Ride." 4. The ballad (which is broken up) is "Someday I'll Fly Away," which will have to be one of the most gorgeous selections played this year (beautiful chord selections and writing). 5. I have only heard bits and pieces of "Huntin' Wabbits" but I can tell you that it is most challenging musically and visually...when this section cleans, it will be amazing to top. Doug Thrower and the visual staff really have it together on this one. 6. Unlike the recent past, this hornline plays RFL!!!!!!! It was like marching 1990 all over again. Of all things, most people will notice that the dynamics of this corps has changed dramatically. I will wait for others to post, but I am certain that most of the same comments will be made. In sum... 1. Great guard 2. Clean musically 3. Demanding drill 4. LOUD HORN LINE (when they need to be). Ted Striker
  6. Ah, one of those then. They've been in vogue for a while now. Mike
  7. Chrome is cool. I'm going to miss the wood finish - what do they have now? Mike
  8. L.E.A.P. (Learning Everything About Percussion/Pageantry) is looking for an experienced pit instructor for the 2004-2005 indoor season. L.E.A.P. won the Percussion Independent A class title at the 2003 and 2004 Winter Guard International World Championships and is looking forward to a successful 2005 season. Rehearsals are held in the far north suburbs of Chicago on Tuesday evenings and occasional Thursdays and weekends from mid-November through mid-April. The 2005 performance schedule is still to be determined, but will include approximately six weekend performances in the Midwest. We are looking for a pit instructor with previous experience teaching mallet percussion and auxiliary instruments to junior high, high school and/or college students, prefera! bly in the marching percussion idiom. For further information, please contact Jeff Hoke, Director, at (847) 265-6790 or by email at Jeff_Hoke@hotmail.com. To learn more about the L.E.A.P. organization, please visit our website at http://lvkhome.northstarnet.org/LEAP/.
  9. I was intending to, but I can't seem to get registered. (And you think I'd know about this, doing what I do! :) ) Thanks, Mike
  10. Oh, and Pearl's also making a 14" Bass Drum. Let me repeat - a 14" Bass Drum. Mike
  11. Hey, I'm desperate here - does anyone have a current e-mail to get in touch with him? :) Please PM me - no need to clutter the forum worse than I already have. Thanks! Mike
  12. That looks *nice.* I wonder what took them so long to make it standard? I remember the Cadets having them in '91, but that was about it... Mike
  13. Pics are nice! I moved this thread to the Show/Event Review Forum, for ease of navigation. Mike
  14. Sorry - I moved the post here - event reviews (even camp ones) have always been moved (or tried to) to this forum - it makes forum navigation easier. In addition, now that it's here, the author is eligible to win the DCP 2004 Show Review Contest - that's not a bad thing! Feel free to PM me with questions or comments. Thanks, Mike
  15. I know the sound of which you speak, but I thought it was a horn sound - they did something similar in '95, didn't they, with the Carpe Noctem show? Mike
  16. Though it wasn't as well performed as the others before it, I've always loved the Brigadoon show... Mike
  17. Hey, all: I've had enough requests for a DCA/Alumni Historical Forum to justify creating one - so here it is! This s/b for discussions of the activity that pertain to topics from 1993 or older (10 years ago or more). We'll be moving some topics in here as we find them; in the meantime, have fun! Mike
  18. Once again, Drum Corps Planet will sponsor the Drum Corps Review contest. Our 2002 version resulted in hundreds of show reviews! The winning review that year ("My First Show") by DCP member "Lynkin" (Tim) - became one of the most popular reads in the history of our site... reminding us all of the thrills and chills our first live drum corps experience! (Tim went on to March with Phantom Regiment in 2003.) For this year's contest - all you have to do to be entered is: 1 ) write a contest or event review 2 ) post it in our review forum or e-mail it to office@drumcorppsplanet.com Reviews need to have been posted or e-mailed to us within five days of the contest date in order to qualify. All show or camp reviews posted between March 1st and Sept 6th 2004 will be considered. Once you've entered your review - it will be considered by our DCP membership for nomination starting on Monday, October 11th. Then, our top ten nominated reviews will go up for vote on Monday, October 18th! On Monday, October 25th, the winning entry will be announced. For this year's contest, DCP is offering the first place winner their choice of the DCA or DCI 2004 Championship CD's! So get those notepads ready - and submit your reviews as often as possible throughout the season. And be sure to read our DCP's popular Review Foum for all the latest and greatest show reviews this summer. Thanks & good luck!
  19. Ah, okay - I must have missed that page. The "new for 2004" answers that.... :)
  20. Anyone seen the BK indoor line this year? How are they doing? Mike
  21. Haven't seen the show, but if it's the diamond commercials that you're thinking of, then it's by Karl Jenkins. Mike
