  1. I will take one ticket for prelims if still available.
  2. Hey I work at one of the big four! I'll hire you if you march your age out! Okay, I don't actually have that much power and I'm not even in the accounting department (work in technology) but to be serious, an internship isn't going to be your only ticket into a career at one of the big four. Most people who work there didn't come through an internship. Yes, the internship can help you get your foot in the door if you do a good job, but don't think of it as your one shot. In fact, if your resume was good enough to get offered an internship, then it will probably be enough to get an interview once next year rolls around. When people are deciding to march or not my spiel is always since I graduated college I've been teaching as a hobby ever since. Having marched drum corps is what allows me to do that and excel at it. It's definitely a lifelong skill. So if you haven't marched before and teaching is something you are interested in, I would definitely suggest it. If, however, you see yourself really throwing yourself fully into your career soon, then maybe that internship would be worth it. You can also consider marching a DCA corps. They will give you a great experience while allowing you to pursue your internship at the same time. Hope this helps!
  3. I have a single ticket for Allentown Saturday night in section G (row 22)! $40 OBO EDIT: No longer available
  4. It turns out I will not be able to go to either night of Allentown. I am selling 2 tickets for both nights (Friday and Saturday) They are in Section G in row 22. Asking for $45/ticket/night ($40 + $5 telecharge fee). Would much prefer to sell all tickets together ($180 total). Will mail to you for free. EDIT: No longer available.
  5. Selling two great tickets for each night! Section: G Row: 19 $40 each!
  6. Hi, I'm trying to sell my VIP ticket package to Dayton this fall for percussion prelims, semi-finals, and finals. Package includes: parking pass coupon for a program book admission to winds finals on Sunday general admission to all prelims and semis VIP seating for all finals $220 OBO
  7. I learned my lesson after I ordered my 2008 DVD's after the cuts were made to Phantom =( I know people were definitely already ripping the videos and they'll always be out there and probably not too hard to find with enough effort but anymore talk like that will probably get this post removed. And to credit DCI, I know they've been getting stricter about it and this one may come down to a sync rights issue. Really I can't be completely sure as copyright law is such a complex minefield in the US.
  8. The Blue Devils change is probably because they were not able to secure a license for the samples they used during that section... It's actually pretty amazing that they were able to do what they did, whether they were able to sample a recording without the samples an seamlessly edit it in or (more likely) EQ out the samples using different microphones, and I'm guessing it will probably be the same on the DVD/Blu-Rays when they come out. This could spark a whole debate about whether corps using all of this licensed music is ruining DCI again, but I think in the end it's all up to the corps themselves. We will probably see DCI getting more and more strict about corps securing the rights before the season starts, closer to what WGI does.
  9. Down low. These were the tickets originally priced at $62.75 each. Need to get rid of them so selling them for $55 each ($110 for both). Will transfer immediately through ticketmaster.
  10. Was searching for DCI Finals tickets and was able to track down some better seats. I just recently bought these off of the dci.org website so they are not much better than what you can just get normally so selling at a slight discount. Seats are down low in section 143 (which I much prefer over sitting up high and not being able to hear anything). You can get an idea of the view here: http://www.lucasoilstadium.com/visitors/getting-around-los-view-from-seats.aspx (not bad, right??? And you'll be outside the Cadets stage!) With fees and everything the tickets cost $129.60 but I'll let them go for $120 or best offer by the weekend. Will transfer immediately through ticketmaster upon receipt of payment.
  11. Awesome review and I really loved the fresh perspective! Thanks!
  12. A couple quick points... The reason Crossmen used a metronome (I'm almost positive) is because they had not been able to put their preshow in, and that's where the source of time was going to come from. For why they wouldn't use a drum major count off during rehearsals as well I have a couple reasons... -Drum corps usually rehearse on as many as 3 different fields at once. The head drum major is usually with the percussion for percussion ensemble requiring the back field conductor to be other places but this isn't a rule. Either way, metronome is the only way you'll be able to keep the rehearsal environment consistent. -Using a drum major count off (correctly positioned towards the back of the field) is just as much a crutch as using a metronome with the added negative that because it's lower pitched, you increase the chance of people not being able to hear it due to wind noise, a truck passing by, etc. As far as how mechanical drum corps sound I feel that's a product of the fact that this is a competitive activity. Buddy Rich wasn't competing against anybody. Drum corps are working to prove that they are undeniably better than their competitors. Compare it to figure skating. Sure, I would love to see more competitors in the olympics do more entertaining shows but in the end what they are there to do is to show off the results of their training, not be performers. But the most notable ones are the ones who manage to both display masterful techniques, and capture the audiences at the same time.
  13. I do think purple and teal work together... but not on a green field. It's just overload for me. I think Crown would look utterly amazing if they just went with white pants instead, keeping the teal shakos and maybe changing the accent color on the jacket to teal. I just can't stand looking at the teal pants on green turf. It makes my eyes hurt. Other than that I really loved the show. If they can give it some more emotional impact it could be a winner but I assume those things are to come as it's still June after all.
  14. Looking to sell a brand new Field Corps series Yamaha Forest Black marching bass drum. Incorrect size was ordered and trying to get as close to retail on it as possible. Retails at $519.95 but will consider best offer.
  15. Yeah, true... but it becomes so hard to describe why I like one show's narration and not another's without what I feel are important distinctions between the uses of spoken voice. Ah that makes some sense to me. Operas by minimalist composers were never my forte and I really wasn't that familiar with Einstein on the Beach until this year and I thank Crown for that (and also Blue Stars for getting me into Nixon in China). I have to give some credit to them for trying to be true to the Opera though it still feels to me to be a weaker part of the design of the show but at least now I can see what they were trying to do.
  16. I'm responding to this only because I honestly feel that Crown's narration is the weakest part of a show I otherwise really love and Cabaret Voltaire is also another show I love. I want to make an important distinction. Narritive, as defined from wikipedia is as follows: The spoken words Crown uses in their show clearly falls under the category of a narrative. They specifically tell the story of the two lovers on the bench. But does what BD used last year fall under the category of a narrative? There isn't actually a sequence of events described by it. It doesn't connect or provide any sort of story in and of itself. What BD uses I would describe simply as dialogue. You can only really extrapolate a narrative if you combine it with the other elements of the show. To borrow a little from screenwriting if you need to use narration you have failed in some way as a story teller in the medium, unless you can provide a compelling reason for the narration. My issue with Crown's narration is I don't quite see the argument for it. It appears to be used in large part to make the ballad and very end of the show more emotional. I would appreciate the product more if they were able to achieve this without the narration. The line I feel most ironic is "so profound was their love for each other, they needed no words to express it." Yet... that's exactly what we need in this show it seems. Anyway, just my two cents. I think way too much about this stuff!
  17. I didn't really want to imply a connection but the trick is achieved in a very similar way and it's definitely the easiest way to describe it to someone who hasn't seen it yet... I'll also leave that you could draw a parallel from both illusions to what Cadets did in 2005 with the character that switches going into the door and I'm sure there are other examples out there.
  18. If you don't want to read about Crown's new ending stop reading here! I don't know exactly how new it is but it definitely wasn't in the show in Atlanta. They've added two more large circular objects to the field (with the same thematic E=mc^2 writing that you see on the drums, etc.) that are big enough to fit people inside. In the old ending the character who played the male lover ran across the field to the woman. Now he goes into one of the circles on the left side of the field and then simultaneously comes out of one on the right side of the field, as if traveling through some kind of worm hole. Ironically very similar to what BD did with mirrors in 2010. Honestly it looked like it still needed a bit of work but could be pretty cool by finals. The trick was a little too obvious and it looked like they had a little trouble with the flaps so you could clearly see what was about to happen. I think it would have worked better if the circles were turned either so he entered from either the left or behind but it was clear they wanted to try and make it look like he was exiting at the exact same time as he was entering but the illusion wasn't quite there for me.
  19. I want to say that Crown has consistently the last couple years had one of the top front ensembles. I do think this year may be a little bit behind last year but it would be pretty hard to top last year's pit that I would argue was the best front ensemble out there (a bit subjective but they would be my choice). Also Hannum knows how to write title winning books so I wouldn't blame it on his style of writing. Really my only theory is that it's an indoor effect. Crown's percussion is by no means shabby but they're going up against corps that have extremely strong indoor groups to feed off of. Not that drummers these days are very local, but when there's a top indoor line in the same area you end up with drummers who do both and are drumming at a high level year round. Blue Devils have prominent members from both Pulse and RCC and Bluecoats have been known to draw from RCC and probably Matrix now as well. Same folks probably head to Cavies and Blue Stars too. Cadets are continuing the momentum they had from last year and I wouldn't be surprised if, like usual, there are several UMASS kids in the line and same goes for SCV and North Texas. Again, I can only make a guess but I feel this probably at least partly explains it.
  20. In regards to water it was, in fact, outlawed after Magic's show but I believe the rule was modified the year after to allow for it to be used as long as it's not spilled on the field. There are some cool percussion effects you can do with water. One time I can remember it being used on the field is the water chime in SCV 2003 (the chime hit at the beginning of One Man Show where the pitch bends down). I'm pretty sure the new rule allows you to still do this as long as it doesn't become a danger to performers on the field. Of course there's the cautionary tale of an indoor group that spilled a little water after their show and incurred a 6.4 point penalty, knocking them out of finals.
  21. All I'll say about Raiders is that it was just about as close as it could possibly have been Things need to change in DCI, and I mean all the way from the top administration to the members, if things are to improve. Drum corps has just gotten too expensive. I don't think drum corps will ever disappear but we will see the number of corps decrease until the amount of spots available equals the amount of kids willing to pay for these spots. It's simple economics.
  22. Not that I'm aware of but it's possible. I've been waiting to see a girl willing to shave her heard join that line!
  23. I personally love the increasing female presence in drumlines that I've seen over the course of the years. It was one thing that really impressed me when I went to WGI championships in Dayton. Lots of female snare, tenor, bass, and cymbal players. I do want to point out that it really shouldn't be hard to find videos of female cymbal players... pretty much SCV and old school Spirit are the only lines that DON'T have girls in them. Here's a nice cymbal video from indoor season: Having put together a montage recently for recruiting I know how hard it is to find some freely available high quality videos of the activity so this might help. Lots of amazing shots from WGI finals:
  24. Unless he's running the met... Come on, it had to be said! Seriously, I hope as many Teal Sound members find a place to march this summer. I saw their bass line at a couple of shows and those guys were good!
