  1. In that top horn photo, are the mellos marching a different lead foot than the baritones in the back? Uniform-wise, not a fan of the black headgear.
  2. It is a replay from the Akron show. On DCI.org it shares: Listed in reverse order of performance. Bluecoats - Canton, OH Carolina Crown - Ft. Mill, SC The Cadets - Allentown, PA Phantom Regiment - Rockford, IL Boston Crusaders - Boston, MA Madison Scouts - Madison, WI The Cavaliers - Rosemont, IL Read more: http://www.dci.org/schedule/#ixzz34v7NNpta
  3. Maybe it's just a combination of pre-season working out the kinks/new uniform stuff and how still pictures reveal what the human eye often misses, but: I hope that PR can avoid performances that have bare upper arms partially exposed prior to the complete sleeve removal. Like these trumpets. Kinda a mish mash of appearance. Interested to see this in action at NIU next month.
  4. Not sure if you are advocating for a score flatline that Madison experienced in 2007? maybe you meant a different year? Over the previous 5 years: DCI ave 9th place score=89.3 DCI ave 10th place score=88 PR's ave season starting score=71.4 PR's ave season ending score=93.6 PR's ave season growth=22.2 So, I guess if they open with a 67 and hold true to their typical growth the previous 5 years they might realize what the previous poster estimated to be a season of 9th/10th placement-on average. It is true that no one can specifically predict. Just thought I'd investigate what has happened for at least the previous 5 years. 2007 was fun to watch Madison, Blue Stars, Southwind, Spirit scores.
  5. They will unveil a secret visual weapon, akin to this production. We will all be amazed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sMc-p19FIk
  6. This topic is a running joke in our home. She says "how do you know this tune?" oh, ______ corps played it. "Did you know the original version before?" most times, yes. some times no. when it is yes, I tend to appreciate the Corps arrangement even more. however, I view it as as a completely independent work suited for the activity, so I try to "turn off" my comparison button. Sort of like when I hear compositions based on a folk/hymn tune etc. i.e. Beethoven's Ode to Joy......Timothy Mahr's Fantasia in G.......Cavaliers 1999
  7. some of this might help Michael Boo Recaps & some mid=season big show scoring 2013 Blue Stars ranged from 9th in Visual Proficiency to 14th in Musical Analysis. Color Guard and Percussion was 10th, Brass 13th and both Effect captions and Visual Analysis finished 12th . [DCI Southeastern] Blue Stars taking the field to set up for "Voodoo: I Put a Spell on You." It's about a lady who discovers the man she loves is attracted to another, and goes to unusual methods of getting him back. 2012 Crossmen added 2.10 to its score in Atlanta and placed in the top 12 in four captions, up from two last weekend. Visual Analysis and Color Guard took 11th, the former tying with Spirit of Atlanta. Visual Proficiency and Music Analysis placed 12th. Both Effect captions and Brass finished 13th and Percussion 14th. [DCI Eastern] Crossmen’s show is titled, “Fragile.” Selections include “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson, “Wailers” by Bobby McFerrin, “PD7” by Anoushka Shanker, “Here Comes the Flood” by Peter Gabriel and “Finding and Believing” by Pat Metheny. 2011 Spirit of Atlanta took 12th in all three Visual captions and Brass, 13th in Music Ensemble, 15th in both GE captions and 16th in Percussion, 0.5 down to Troopers. [DCI Minnesota] How good was it to hear Brandt announce Spirit of Atlanta in tonight's DCI finals' lineup. This is the first time Spirit of Atlanta has made the DCI finals since 1990. Of course, they made it five times as Spirit of Jacksonville State University. "ATL Confidential: A Tribute to Film Noir." There are five main things all Film Noir based on; a femme fatale, a hero (often a detective), a chase of some sort, a nightclub, and it always ends with a question mark, often not resolved. The films don’t always go the way we want them to go. Show ends with lots of angst and anger as the films do. The corps did a magnificent job of bringing all these elements to life. 2010 Glassmen with Percussion in 9th and Brass in 14th. Other than that Brass placement and 13th in Visual Performance, all other captions were 11th or 12th [DCI Semis] Hawk said the corps’ program was designed to sound better within the booming walls of the stadium. “[The Prayer Cycle] is a very different show for us conceptually. Orchestration-wise, I think it’s a thinner, more feature-esque opener because of Lucas Oil,” Hawk said. “So I think the show is better designed around the stadium, looking toward Finals 2009 Troopers Judging by the enthusiastic reception the corps received just by walking out on the field, a lot of fans were hoping to witness history today by seeing the Troopers break into the top 12 for the first time since 1986. The corps’ 2009 production “Western Side Story” is charming in how it melds together music we would expect from the more traditional element of the corps with melodies as diverse as “Cave” and “West Side Story.” Part of the pleasing nature of the combination is in the surprise at how everything blends so naturally. And after the beauty of “One Hand, One Heart,” the clarion trumpet fanfare seemed to rip apart that heart to the loud approval of the audience. 2008 Madison “La Noche de la Iguana” plays off the corps’ success with Latin music in past years. This is music one might hear wafting out of a Latin nightclub at night while waiting for a rendezvous with a secret agent. While it plays with subtleties, the fire and intense audacity of this show reminds us of the searing hot Madison corps of the past … and likely the future as well. 2007 Spirit of JSU “Genesis” peeks at the corps’ rebirth as it faces the future with a new style and altered identity that is fresh and updated, as exemplified by the clean look of the new uniforms that are futuristic while harkening back to the delta design of the corps’ birth. Divided into the segments, “Creation,” “Controversy” and “Conflict,” the show passes through the driving Oriental sensitivity of Jun Nagao’s “Fluttering Maple Leaves,” into the evocative strains of Imogen Heap’s murmuring “Hide and Seek” and smashing into the valiant soaring disposition of David Gillingham’s “New Century Dawn,” speaking to the genesis of a new day and entertaining corps productions yet to come. 2006 Spirit of JSU has maintained a healthy spread of almost two points over Colts heading into the all-important cut-off for Saturday’s competition. 2006 production entitled, “Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue.” “Old Man River.” “That Old Black Magic.” Music from the soundtrack of “The Notebook” “The Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters.” “Blues in the Night,” and Frank Ticheli’s wind score of “Blue Shades. 2005 Spirit of JSU The Spirit of Broadway Give My Regards to Broadway (from Yankee Doodle Dandy) New York, New York (from On the Town) On Broadway, They’re Playing Our Song , Entre Act (from Sweeney Todd) Not While I’m Around (from Sweeney Todd) Pie Jesu (from Requiem) Luck Be A Lady (from Guys and Dolls) No One Mourns the Wicked (from Wicked) Defying Gravity (from Wicked) 2004 Glassmen Show was called Vice of One. Prologue * Diversions - Serenade for Orchestra * The Saint (from Seraphic Dialogues) * The Cave * Finale for Martha 2003 Spirit of JSU Also in 2003, Spirit from JSU moved up from 14th in the Quarterfinals competition to 12th in Semifinals, putting the corps in the World Championship Finals for just the second time since 1990. “Time” was the title and theme of the show. A single chime rang out seven times and the horns came in with brief hints of “Auld Lang Syne” and Cyndi Laupner’s “Time After Time” from her 1984 album, “She’s So Unusual.” These time-related snippets led into John Barry’s “Somewhere in Time. “Whirr, Whirr, Whirr!!!” provided the musical backdrop for the movement titled, “Vertical Momentum.” “A Look Back in Time,” October” by composer Eric Whitacre, “Danny Boy” “Let It Be Me. 2002 Cascades City Riffs, Music of Leonard Bernstein. This was a show where everything seemed to work as planned. The music was playable by the rapidly ascending corps and Myron Rosander’s drill formations seemed perfectly coordinated with the music. “On the Town, “Profanation” “Simple Song” from “Mass” “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs” “Make Our Garden Grow” from “Candide 2001 Colts Chivalry. Sinfonia Voci, Allemande (from Courtly Airs and Dances) Nobis Domine (from Henry V)Battle Scene, Once More Unto the Breach. Colts made it back into Finals after a year off by capturing 12th place with an 85.95, helped by a 9th place Percussion Music score 2000 Bluecoats Threshold. Intro, And on the Sixth Day & The Witch, Air Antique, Finale.
  8. Wondering if the circle on the shako will be mirrored/reflective. One grey glove, one white glove. Wish the corps uniform stance showed how the dark & light meet on the torso, time will tell. Will need to investigate a bit more before making final judgement, but like a good number of the elements shown, just need additional view angles/info. Their fundraising campaign has surpassed 50% btw.
  9. My first exposure to Interstellar Suite was by total accident. The local Capitol Records pressing plant held annual delete sales, where one could acquire cassettes, CD's, Box sets, videos from several labels for amazing prices. In fact, 95% of my Blue Note collection was created this way. So, naturally if something looked like a "I'll try that" I would not be set back too much coin, and quite possibly could discover a hidden treat. Such was the case with this Amin Bhatia work [1987], one of several handled by Cinema Records at the time. Of course upon first listen I thought it to be great source material for Drum Corps, and it has been used by several. "The orchestral textures utilized a complex blend of synthesizers, but no digital sampling was done as a gesture of respect to orchestras throughout the world." "one pair of crash symbals [sic] .......and one minimoog" are included in the list of equipment used for the recording.
  10. Kevin Creasy is his name. Also, Adam Rapa [beast] pretty much shouldered the task of East Coast Jazz when he was a mm., both as soloist and as Lead Player imo.
  11. not a fan of the cape-ettes. I prefer a clean line uninterrupted ribs to toes.
  12. And: trombone slides can make an awesome Sword for this presentation!!!! timing is everything
  13. Have enjoyed studying some uniform design concepts through the years and have applied what I believe are important considerations during a number of constructions. One concept that always weighed heavily was perception of "cleanliness". The ability of the eye and mind to believe that formations are in proper alignment/form/interval is a powerful one. Additionally, design components equalizing body variety as well as creating perceived elevated performer height assist in promoting "cleanliness" IMHO. Certainly use of light vs dark plays a big role in this. My dad & I still debate/discuss whether it is best to have the uniform jacket front baldric element descend from the right or left shoulder!! I firmly believe that design plays a part in perception, hence evaluation.
  14. Very sad news. RIP link to news on from facebook page. translate http://mbbpkt.com/2014/02/20/berita-satu-rene-conway-mengabdi-untuk-marching-band-di-bontang/
  15. Colts used Pollock charts as well in 2010
  16. go to musicforall.org for some info. bottom of home page has sponsors listed DCI is one of the sponsors of Music for All btw.
  17. Trombone tubing is mostly cylindrical, whereas baritone tubing is @ 50/50 cylindrical/conical. Euphonium tubing is mostly conical. VERY unique tone qualities to the trained ear. Harvest concerto by Mackey performed by Bloo would have been truer to it's original, but I appreciate the activity for it's pre-2014 instrumentation and the ability of arrangers to create books that are unique. IOW, I can love both the original composition as much as the drum corps arrangement.
  18. 2009, Troopers back in Finals!!! 2008 for charts Interesting everyone's answers seem to solely consider only finalists and junior corps, so I will edit my response to say the year that had the MOST active performing corps. :)
  19. Check with OSHA. Studied this last year, but don't have my materials handy. There are peak db tolerances as well as sustained exposure limitations. IIRC it may have been @ 185db for 30 minutes=damage. Again, just going off top of my head-sorry. VERY easy to reach damage levels in a closed rehearsal environment. Again, do a quick google of OSHA. Also recall discovering a legal case involving a public school music instructor who requested facility improvements based upon excessive levels.
  20. Hope this is available DVD!!! Looking around at WMC 2013 and one can watch Gita Surosowan perform. It is fun to look at all the groups at that event!! Impressive to compare the floor show performance with the field performance. Obvious lots of hard work!! Field http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDido4gA_TE Floor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9JWMaRId-0#t=191 Gita Surosowan Page http://www.youtube.com/user/GitaSurosowanBanten
  21. Fazil Say's "Istanbul Symphony", lots of material in those seven movements from Turkish folk groove to jazz elements. Pretty cool stuff.
