  1. Todd Ryan wrote the Madison '88 drill as well and I believe was at Star in '91 with Zingali. Great guy!
  2. While teaching second grade, I have occasionally dusted off and worn my 2006 Madison Alumni Project uniform. Always a hit!
  3. If I recall... You could put them down on the field in '81, but everything had to be on the field (no pit area on the sidelines). Most everyone marched 4 keyboards (except maybe Garfield? One other who grounded concert instruments?) but had one timpanist grounded. 27 marched the timps, and they were awesome (glad I didn't have to carry them...). 82 saw the creation of the pit area. For a while, instrumentation stayed the same- bells, xylo, vibes, marimba, and a timpanist, with one or two concussionists- for most corps. and then 2v 2m, then...then...then...
  4. Dear Japan, Please consider hiring Michael Gaines and/or BDE to help coordinate your opening ceremony. Thank you.
  5. I wish they'd keep them- love the darker sound. Sounding great guys!
  6. Awesome news! The real question: does the original Lemon Squeeze shirt he wore every day for years still exist? (I own one, btw, and wouldn't sell it for ((almost)) any price)
  7. Funny thing...I played the castinets in the closer (replaced by the chattering novelty jaws...). Total spit take here. Loved it!
  8. I highly doubt it. The 4th place Corps tomorrow nite I'm pretty sure will be more than a point out of first.. and thus out of contention. There has never been a 4th place Corps in the Quarters that has ever gone on to jump pass 3 Corps between the Semi's and the Finals for the Title. 2015 won't be the first either, imo. But... as they say... time will tell. 1996 Phantom Regiment August 15 DCI World Championships Quarter Finals Orlando FL 4th place 94.600 (tied with Madison, as I recall...) August 16 DCI World Championships Semi Finals Orlando FL 3rd place 95.500 August 17 DCI World Championships Orlando FL 1st place 97.400 It has happened!
  9. I know I'm from the mylar generation- (watched people dig through the trash after SCV used the first Remo kevlar heads in '87 hoping for a look into the future), but many classic drum sounds in the early kevlar years happened with mylar. Star, Bluecoats, etc. In the classic recordings, I love the last few years of plastic:'86 Devs, '87 Cadets, '87 Phantom, '84 Vanguard, '85 Suncoast. Crazy cool drum sounds. I love distinct sounds from drum corps, be it horns or drums. If Kevlar works for you, great. If mylar floats your boat, sure! If I get out of the car and hear a drum line and say "Let's check out the Scouts!", super cool!
  10. I'm in Kansas City. It's "All About That Base" tonight. Thank You.
  11. 1980 27th Lancers (the littlest timp please!) 1984 SCV 1990 Star 1995 Madison 2004 Cavaliers Just a few!...
  12. FWIW, I personally saw him in the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium sitting in the luggage bin of the BD bus after finals.
  13. I guess what I really take from this is... Why not bring someone from the "legacy" years in to talk about the performance you are reviewing? I'd be happy to answer any questions (to the best of my memory) and provide insight about the show. Let me know what questions you have! Matt (BTW, we had 2 marimbas, 2 vibes, one xylo, one bells, one aux, and one kettledrummer in the pit. The end of the show we left 3 in the pit, the rest joined the cymbal line from the mello solo to the end...effect!)
  14. I'm embarrassed to say that the camera shot of the timpanist screws up the effect. The soloist is playing while the rest of the corps is at a dead scatter run, collapsing into the form, followed by the turn into the wedge. Drill move 1, soloist a close second. The semis vid is so much better, trust me!
  15. My perspective from someone who had a chance at choice #1... In semis in 1988 the Madison Scouts had the highest score, won drums, and other stuff, but we didn't know it because of the draw for scores. On Saturday we knew the caption scores as they were announced, and that we were in 1st place overall, and we were ecstatic. Later we found out that on Friday we had the highest score in several categories won by other corps on Saturday, and thought "wow, it would have been cool to win guard and drums and ..." Nothing was as cool as being called champions as a corps. Would I trade a Sanford trophy for the DCI championship? Nope.
  16. '84 will always be my favorite not-marching year. Cadets, Devils, SCV, Phantom, Madison, Spirit, Suncoast, Cavaliers, Freelancers, Xmen, 27, and VK... top to bottom, FanTastic!
  17. I'm with you on lucked out... My friends and I were all corps junkies in HS- Mr. Kuhn had worked our band camp a few times, as well as Marty (?) from SCV. I started going to shows in '83, had instructors who marched Cavaliers in '84, went to a Marty Hurley clinic in '85. Wanted to march after my senior year, and tried out for Sky in fall '86- crushed to get cut in December. Mr. Orwoll called in early June of '87 and asked if I'd like to join the Colts (I had a friend marching) and I accepted. Scott Stewart called a day later with an offer to join as equipment guy/back field conductor (had a former teacher in the pit) and a chance to play in the Madison front line in '88, and I explained that I had just said yes to Colts. He was cool, and said that he hoped to meet me on the road. Loved my half year with Colts, but knew that they had openings at Madison, and I already knew the pit guys and instructors, as well as the fact that the Scouts were going to tour Europe. Showed up at auditions, played a bit, threw a frisbee and played four square, got an offer and joined Madison at Thanksgiving camp. The ring was a shock to me, the fact that we were really good was not... it was a special year, and I almost feel guilty for being there with so many vets and ageouts as a rookie. In the end, all four guys in my wedding party were Scouts, I still collaborate and teach with m' brothers 25 years later and marching in the alumni corps was so cool! My corps was the right fit for me, and I hope that every marching member finds a perfect home sometime in their years in drum corps.
