  2. There is a new guard in the Kitchener-Waterloo area !!! However, they will offer no competition to the Ventures Winter Guard in any way.

This guard is called "The Dream Seekers Special Needs Colour Guard" and is ONLY open to K-W youth from 14-25 living with a life challenge !!! This guard was started by alumni of the Dutch Boy Drum Corps back in July.

In their first year of exhibition the Dream Seekers will be doing shows in the central Ontario region only. The membership will be around 10 marchers and using basically flags. Rifles and sabres will be added when the staff sees fit. This is the 1st Special Needs Colour Guard in CANADA and will be the base unit for many more special needs guards in the future.

The guard colours will be black, white and blue. The guard already has three bookings for the spring time and are quite anxious to get started on Tuesday October 1, 2013

  3. The Northstar Youth Organization, the parent company of the Dutch Boy Drum Corps of the past, is coming out with an 80 member unit. The MARCHING BAND will be called NORTHSTAR BAND, using all the instrumentation of a marching band. Although the alumni are disappointed with this move, it is in the best interest of the kids in the community. It keeps the kids in the community busy and it gives the city their own band.

  4. Keith,

A good source tells me an effort is being made to bring Canadian Corps back into DCI competition on the WC level. Don't know whether it will work, but I offer my best wishes to those who are trying.

Where's your response to the march thread? You started it, then you disappeared. Come back, Lassie.

    Kevin

Where the hell did you hear this ?

  5. To my fellow drum corps alumni !! I meant no disrespect to the Dutch Boy Drum Corps or to any one who marched in the corps. I have spent many years both in the corps and as a volunteer. I bleed Dutch Boy red, white and black. Nobody more than me would love to see them back on the field.

My apologies to those that were excited by this only to have your hopes dashed by a senseless APRIL FOOLS JOKE !!!

  7. Yes, KW Northstar were a merger of Dutchboy and Flying Dutchmen in the 70's... they formed the Northstar Youth Organization which were Dutchboy Cadets and KW Northstar,, a Cadet Corps and (at that time) Open class corps. Just recently, they gone back to that model,, with (to my understanding),, Dutchboy being a cadet corps for the younger local youth, and Northstar geared to be the competitve DCI corps. Sort of, going back to the roots and being a 'youth' organization for local, off the street kids to learn to march, play, and be respectful citizens of the city(s) they live in.

I wish them the very best of luck, and hope that soon, I may be able to help them out...

Can this be confirmed from another source that this Northstar program being talked about is geared to be a competitive DCI corps? That would be great news for the area if they have the right resources. And is this in the near future (2 years)? or unforeseen future?

That was the original intent back in 1977 but I know first hand that the corps director couldn't handle the job and made a major mistake then half the corps quit. A valent attempt was made to keep the corps going but with a lack of members they merged with the Guelph Royalaires for the 1979 season, then both corps went their separate ways and DUTCH BOY regrouped to start fresh again and try to make a DCI corps. In 1982, the won the 'A' Class DCI World Championship and in 1990 they finished 12th at FINALS. Shortly after that n 1993, due to financial circumstances DUTCH BOY went inactive and the Cadets of Dutch Boy, their feeder corps, kept on operating and in 1997 became the mothership of the Northstar Youth Organization. I just hope they get their act together....soon.

  8. For the last few years, BD has tended to feature a snippet of one tune from its past:

    • 2007 Pegasus (1980 and 1982)
    • 2009 Happy Days Are Here Again (1988)
    • 2010 La Suerte De Los Tontos (or, as Dan Potter calls it, "Las Suertos") (1979, 1980, 1992)

Which one would you like to hear in 2011, even if for just a bit?

How about using a snippet from the 2010 show, and see if anyone notices?

    or cares !!!!

  9. A thought: Could this eventually grow, with DCI support, to be the "local circuit" to which OC is sent/welcomed, there-by leaving DCI to be the Major League?

I'd like to see this grow "WITHOUT" DCI involvement !! Let's see where this goes, you never know, if there are enough drum corps in this they might bring back the U.S. Open, the American International or some more little shows that helped build the drum & bugle corps movemnet !!!

DCI keep your hands OFF !!!:tongue:
