The first time I saw the Cavaliers live was at DCI prelims in '82 when DCI was literally in my backyard in Montreal ! I fell in love with the corps and decided that one day I was going to march their rifle line !!! Finally marched my last 2 years with them ('88 and '89) and loved every minute of it !!! PS: Absolutely love the transformation of the corps these last 2 years - and the guard is amazing this year !!!!! Mike

The guard isn't clean right now - because this is the most difficult book they've had in years. Coupled with the fact that they are probably still learning work - means it will take them longer to get clean, but the written book is there - and that needs to be the starting point. The last couple of years, their work was "pretty" which wasn't hard enough o really compete come August. I think this is their best show in a while and if they clean it up - will be very competitive at DCI ! later, Mike

Did he write the guard book this year (please say yes) ! - I've gotta say - I'm a bit worried about Crown's guard - and I have been one of their biggest fan for years ! Blue Devils have built their guard dynasty though incredible staff consistency. Mike

First Time Ever at DCI
Guardguy89 replied to Guardguy89's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I stand corrected - thanks -
Hi all, Unless I'm wrong (which is always a strong probability) - I think this is the first time ever that the top 6 have all been DCI champions (had Phantom come in 7th - it would have been the top 7). Bluecoats BD Crown SCV Cavaliers Cadets Later, Mike

Awesome !!!

I wouldn't bother responding - happened to me a couple of times too. Arguing on the Internet seems to be a sport for some people. I get your comments about Bluecoats - still think that Crown should be untouchable - but get where you're coming from ! I do think that BD is allowed to surf a bit on previous glory - but I also think that I just don't enjoy their presentations as much as I'm very much an equipment person first. Later, Mike

Agree with everything you say. I guess I still hate the fact that this seems to be one of the most "subjective" categories to judge - but Crown should be untouchable this year but every standard there is when it comes to guard. Hopefully they can get that trophy this year - it's entirely deserved ! Later, Mike

To be honest, I can't figure out how Crown would be 3rd in guard right now. I don't think staging is a problem at all. You clearly focus where you need to - the story is told through the guard - and the through line is evident (although I'm sure they'll add more) I have more of a problem with BD when it comes to guard I don't think their program is as strong as previous years (I felt the same last year too) - and although they are staged extremely well - they have some major transitional issues (which they have every year, but get away with). I would love to pick the guard judges brain and help me understand. I've been marching / teaching guard for over 30 years - and I can't see what they see. For me it comes down to - could Crown spin BD's show - yep - but could BD spin Crown's show - not so sure. Later, Mike

I still stand by my comment The demand placed on the members - and their execution is phenomenal. But yeah - no streamers on the sabres probably hurt them Mike

How did Crown not win guard - that doesn't make sense in any universe. Later, Mike

Very true - don't think it will end up as high as "Mad World" did - but I am getting the same vibe from the show in that it has many layers that once developed will clear up the show a lot and hopefully allow them to get back to top 6 Later, Mike

I'm wondering if this show becomes another "Mad World" - started out the season disjointed and hard to get and ended up being one hell of a show by finals. They certainly creeped up on Vanguard last night! I'm excited to see where they will end up - and I haven't been excited about them in a while. Later, Mike

Denver Drumbeat (Drums Along the Rockies)
Guardguy89 replied to Allegro89's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Yeah - it's pretty much the exact uniform we had when I marched Brigs ! Now I miss Brigs !!! Mike -
I'm just going to add how much I love this show (finished or not). It's really intellectual and different and thoughtful - I don't know how else to explain it - but it really grabbed me ! Later, Mike

I think some people need to google the definition of "Propaganda" - they might then realize that the term is not always negative is usage - and that might be the point of the Cavies show - no political agenda there at all ! Later, Mike

So I'm guessing they're kinda modelling it after Carmel's winterguard show from 2014 called "Gunslinger" Even has some of the same music - should be a great show for Crown ! Mike
-
As one of the 4 people who read this - thanks ! Diamente reminds me of Fantasia's One Good German show - also all rifles. I think Tarpon will be awesome - once the can clean - there is some tricky, tricky stuff in there ! Later, Mike

The Cavaliers' Recent Fall in the Standings
Guardguy89 replied to MikeN's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I don't agree with this. I think judges do a very good job of ranking and rating corps in their individual captions - and the total results usually end up pretty much where they should. I thin Cavaliers finished exactly where they should have last year (and I'm a Cavies Alumi) and I think Cadets finished where they should have last year too. Later, Mike -
Official 2016 Staff Changes
Guardguy89 replied to Cappybara's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Agreed - their movement was really awkward - it just didn't look right on the members. Same problem the year before. When you compare them with BD, Crown and Vanguard - their movement style and written book is a huge step backwards. Later, Mike -
Yep - BD the is the only co-ed guard where only males can be rifle and females can be sabres. If you ask me - it's no better or worse than an all male or all female guard. It's more about the show design and technique than the gender. Later, Mike
-
I honestly don't mind their all girl guard. It gives them a specific look. However - they do need to stop designing shows specifically around what "girls" could portray (Juliet, Asian Princess, Fairy Tale, Holly Go Lightly) and use the guard to portray the music or theme at an other level - not just around the idea that the theme is "female specific so our guard is all girls". I absolutely loved Flower Duet and thought it was one of the best ballads out there - different strokes for different folks I guess !!! Later, Mike
