  1. Huh. I went to high school with Keith Carlock. I didn't realize he was famous. In addition to the above, I believe he has also played with Paula Abdul and Sting. However I'm positive he never marched junior corps. We are the same age and from the same high school and about 10 people I went to high school with marched. If Keith had marched I would have known.
  2. I heard most of the cast of Blast! are drumcorps vets.
  3. Holy crap - that's amazing! She's awesome!
  4. I aged out in 93, 20 minutes from my house. In some ways it was kindof cool. We had a thing in Bluecoats where ageouts would rotate shows for who would call the block at retreat. If an ageout had a "home show", they would get to call the block for that particular show. When this was discussed at the beginning of the season, I said the only show that I wanted to do was my homeshow. Of course, nobody realized at the time that it would be finals! :P So I got to call block at finals which was really cool. But after that, it sucked. You go from living/bonding with the same people 24/7 for 10 weeks straight (or more) and from the peak of the summer - DCI finals - retreat - aging out - fireworks - the whole deal - and then in 20 minutes you're at home back to your normal life. It was culture shock to the extreme. I was depressed for about 2 weeks.
  5. It was in one of the worst parts of Jackson. We had to walk down a street littered with dilapidated crack houses to get to our practice field. Other than going to our practice field (which we did as a group) we really couldn't go anywhere outside of our housing site. I don't think we had any incidents though. The worst that happened is supposedly a couple locals came into the gym trying to pawn some jewelry to some of the members of the corps. Apparently, other corps had it worse. As you pointed out, BAC had a tough time. I've heard rumors that shots were fired near (at?) someones housing site. That's what you get for arranging housing in the inner city. The suburbs of Jackson are just as nice and safe as any other city suburbs (if not more so).
  6. That's my alma mater - Mississippi College. B) In 93, Blue Knights stayed here. Up until 2 months ago I lived in Clinton. I lived there for 20 years. Very nice place.
  7. That was cool. :P What's funny is to watch the crowd up-and-downs.
  8. Hey Patrick (fellow mello)! There are enough very nice housing sights in the Jackson area to support even a large show. The issue in 93 I think was poor planning and poor timing. Alot of housing had to moved at the last minute because some schools had already started school and decided that they didn't want a bunch of high school and college age half naked people running around the school. It's unfortunate that so many had such a bad experience there. Most of the Jackson area is very nice, but most of what people saw in 93 were the worst parts. If planned properly, a show in Jackson is very do-able and could be a pleasant experience.
  9. This is the streak that should be feared the most. Cavies have a stranglehold on the top. With the design team and staff they have, there's no sign of them giving up their perch at the top any time soon.
  10. Yeah - I would pay (again) for a remastered copy of 95. I went so far as to try to enhance the recordings myself using some audio software, but couldn't really get it to sound any better.
  11. Good times... good times... In 93, we were practicing on a field next to a neighborhood where there was a house no more than 30 feet from the field. After about 20 minutes of practice, a woman comes out pleading with the staff to move us to another field because her house was rattling so bad that pictures were falling off of the walls. Needless to say, we all looked at each other with a "Oh, he77 yeah!" look. :P
  12. In general I agree. But for a non-profit, I think it's appropriate to disclose all financials including salaries. I would want to know if a non-profit is using 80% of it's funds to "self-sustain" with 50% going to the chief.
  13. I don't know if they do it every year, but I've got a HUGE one they did of 93 retreat that was taken from the back stands. It's friggin awesome. I wish I could scan it.
  14. What was the deal with that? I've always wondered why those recordings sucked @##. I was so disappointed when I first listened to Cavies and the part where the corps turns to peel your face off with Mars just sounds the same volume as backfield. Blehhhh!!!!
  15. I agree completely. It seems to me that they are a bit underpaid as others have pointed out. Why?
  16. Amazing Bari soloist! Agree 100%! Beautiful brass line. Best bari line in DCI in my opinion.
  17. If anyone knows the stupid @##-clown who yelled "SUTAAAAAAA" at the top of his lungs in the middle of the quietest park of PRs ballad, post his mailing address, phone number and email so we can all spam him, phone harrass him, and then go to his house and kick him in the ding-ding. I swear, if I had been standing anywhere near him, I would have have been arrested shortly thereafter for assault.
  18. At Bluecoats, we always thought it was pretty funny that it doesn't matter if we get "Blooo"ed or "Booo"ed because we wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If the entire crowd booed us as loud and as hard as they could, we would all have been all the more hyped! :)
  19. I would love to hear a corps as strong as Crown was this year play Stormworks. B)
  20. That moment is going to stick with me. It was a great moment. I don't believe the crowd booing was intended as a slight to BK, but just disappointment that Crown, who had a terrific show, terrific brass, terrific colorguard (but unfortuneately less than stellar percussion) were seemingly placed too low. It cannot be emphasized what a huge positive reaction followed. To me, it seemed it was most enthusiastic positive reaction of the night (except for perhaps PR). It definitely was the best I've ever heard for any 8th place corps.
  21. I heard Crown's hornline was so loud that it distracted Chuck Norris during a roundhouse kick. He was in China at the time.
  22. This does not strike me as a blatently "classless". He's not bragging about kicking every other corps' @## and saying that next year nobody has a shot. He's just saying that they will probably be better (and has a reasonable argument to support his opinion).
  23. I'm not a fan of vocals/amplification but I have to say that Cadets' vocals during the ballad is the most tasteful use of both that I've heard in a drumcorps show.
  24. I was at finals and all of the people I taked to have said that overall - this has been one of the most entertaining seasons on record. Apparently it comes down to personal taste. You used Cadets 93 show (Kings) as an example of great drumcorps "wow" moments. I personally find that show a bit boring. And I found that this year, unlike most recent years, almost every corps had several "wow" moments.
