  1. Congratulations Troop! 21 years ago you were part of my "drumcorps education" when I was first introduced to the activity so I've been a fan ever since. Everyone is proud to see you back in the top 12!

To Colts and Academy - you guys were awesome and I wish you could have made it too. Great job this season!

  2. In 87 Sky Ryders we WERE supposed to be street gangs with instruments (...doing our West Side Story show). So this happened after 87 then?

Brad - perhaps it's urban legend (no pun intended), but didn't you guys have a free day in New York in 87 where some of the members, because they were all wearing the same jackets (corps jackets), got mistaken for gang members by an actual New York street gang?

  3. I really want to try out for one of the top 10 drum corps, and I wanted to know what anyone thought of my chances for making it.

Go for it! If you've got the playing chops, you can probably make it in anywhere you want. The lack of DCI level marching experience is probably no a big deal. You've got 4 years of high school marching and as long as you're not a complete timing incompetent clutz, they'll beat the marching into you anyway.

Actually the biggest factor is going to be dedication and work ethic. Assuming you've got the playing chops aspect covered (which you sound fairly confident that you do), if you make it to all the camps and show up prepared, knowing what they've told you to know, and practiced what they've told you to practice, you're pretty much as good as in.

I'm skeptical as to whether or not my arms can handle a Euph.

No one's arms can handle the Euph in the beginning. Like I said - they'll beat that into you.

  4. In our theater the bass was so high that when a synth was playing with the corps, you could not hear the hornline. The bass was shaking the seats; and not in a good way.

A guy asked them to turn up the volume after Madison left the field. Other than the bass, it sounded good.

    That was me. :bluedevil:

You'd think that with an event named "Big, Loud and Live" they'd have a clue.

We had to ask again cause they didn't turn it up enough the first time. I shoulda asked them to turn down the bass. You couldn't hear Madison at all due to the synth bass swallowing everything up. After they turned the volume up the second time the sound was much better though. I don't know if the problem with Madison was a theater sound balance issue or the corps' sound balance issue.

  5. That is my biggest disappointment because the Colts were just dead on tonight! Bring it in Semi's Red Team! I could tell the broadcast team was disppointed in this too.

I've been rooting for the Troop (wore my Troop shirt to the broadcast) but was a little worried after seeing Colts perform tonight. I had thought that Colts might catch them tonight.

I ache for whichever two corps take the 13th and 14th spot because I think all three (Troop, Colts and Academy) are finals material and all would deserve it.

  6. No WAY was Bluecoats 95 show 'Championship Quality.' MAYBE Top 6 quality, but when they do a show design similar to Cadets (a Champion quality show), there's no way they get compared favorably (at least not back then).

I wouldn't say Bluecoats 95 was championship quality, but I would say that it was a defintely a top 6 design (top 4 in my opinion). They just didn't have the talent/instructional-staff to put them that high. I don't agree that Cadet's design was championship quality or even a better design than Bluecoats', but they had the potential talent to put it on top despite the level of design. (That's not to say that Cadet's design was bad - not by a long shot - just not championship quality).

Maybe it's my personal bias kicking in. I dunno - it's all subjective anyway.

edit: BTW - how do you know it was Bluecoats doing a show similar to Cadets? Maybe it was Cadets doing a similar show to Bluecoats.

(If I recall, I think Bluecoats announced their show concept before Cadets that year - but I could be wrong).

  7. I think the top 3 were probably the worst top 3 of any finals that I've seen. But I think that skews peoples perceptions of the year as a whole. I thought from 4th place down were exceptionally entertaining. Other than the top 3, 2007 is one of my favorite years.

  8. I realize this is a longshot but I was hoping to find someone who attended DCI North in Buffalo in 1993 AND bought the souvenir program AND still has it. As I recall, a photo of me was used on the page about the Bluecoats. If anyone out there has the program, I was hoping that I could either buy the program from them or have them scan a copy for me.

Reply here or PM me. Thanks in advance!

  9. i am confussed. i looked at the scores from the show in west chester and it does not seem to add up. if you add all captions you would get cavies first and cadets second and crown third. how do they figure the scores?

Can you specify where the discrepancy is? I just looked at the recaps and they all add up correctly as far as I can tell.

  10. Bluecoats = Gunther

At first I was like "Huh?" and then I laughed. I'm assuming the reason "Bluecoats = Gunther" is because BITD (you know - early 90s),

the Bluecoats contra section (tubas to you noobs) had a neon orange crowbar named Gunther that they took to retreat (you know - back when they had retreat) and spiked into the ground.

I'm not sure if the tradition still stands but I know that it lasted for quite awhile.

  11. 1994 was a big one. Boston came in looking at 12th and i think the Colts shocked everyone with their first ever finals appearance and snuck in there after semi-finals making BAC wait another 5 years. Let me know if i got this one right or not.

Actually Colts made their first appearance placing 12th at finals in 1993.

  12. Someone needs to start a club for people who marched a show under interesting circumstances.

Shout out to Eric Krebs! Marched finals in 95 after being hit by a car that afternoon!

If you watch Bluecoats 95 show, you can see the bandages on a snare drummers head. I personally think it was an elaborate conspiracy to get a boost in GE.

My contribution? I marched a show with a rubber sandal taped to my foot. Good times!

I marched a couple shows with my middle finger bandaged.... meh.

  13. In general, to march with pain can be admirable in some circumstances. But to march with an injury that could lead to the permanent loss of sight in an eye, against medical advice, is not very smart. It's not the percentage play for leading a full and happy life.

I see your point and agree that you shouldn't risk permanent injury for a single drumcorps show. But it sounds to me that in this case there was no danger of rsiking further injury to her eyesight. I think the advice not to march was due to the fact that they didn't know if she would be able to handle the spatial orientation needed for the drill.

As an aside - I marched with a girl who was blind in one eye.

  14. There's also a general opinion that BD is arrogant

I had several bad experiences with BD members when I was marching. I try to be objective and not let that experience influence my opinions, but I'm sure that it still does to some extent.

My lovely bride even had a BD member on a flight to his camp tell her the name of their show - 1930 - was picked because, if you add the numbers, 1+9+3+0 = 13.

It's stuff like that make people want to see BD lose.

I like BDs show this year (there's the love part of my post). :satisfied:

  15. If BD wins it will probably be my least favorite 1st place show in the history of DCI. Technically superior but almost nothing emotionally.

BDs 07 show goes down as my least favorite. But I really like BDs show this year. I just think they are getting scored way higher than they should due to the lack of difficulty of the show (relatively speaking). I don't like Cadets show as much but Cadets clearly have a much more demanding show and are performing it well. They should be beating BD in my opinion. As I said earlier, I could literally hear horns bouncing around during BDs show. I didn't hear that with Cadets and their visual book is far more demanding.
