  1. Hey Folks...I started this post to find out about SCV's newest percussion arranger, Ed Bargarena. Man you guys get way off topic fast!! Start your own discussion. Sheesh!!!
  2. Just noticed a new arranger has been added to the amazing talents of Murray Gusseck in the percussion section. Anybody know who Ed Barguiarena is? Wasn't he a member of the SCV tenor line back in the late 80's? Is he solely arranging for the Front Ensemble, or is he arranging battery too along with Murray? Any news???
  3. OK, I nominate: Mike Apodaca, Sean Vega, or Murray Gusseck (yeah, I know he's like super-busy these days) for Renegades tenor tech. That would b sweet!!
  4. So who is teaching and arranging for the Renegades percussion section in 2005? The website still has the 2004 staff info up. So who is the 2005 percussion staff??
  5. Gambal Malets? Did the company go under, or are they still making mallets. I used to love playing with their tenor mallets!!
  6. so is he writing the pit AND battery books, or just the battery?
  7. If that was your friend's response, he has a lot to learn before he ever comes close to marching in SCV or any other reputable corps in DCI. Drum Corps is a lot more than your ability to play a drum well and march well. It has a whole lot to do with character & maturity, both of which your friend is sorely lacking based on his childish remark.
  8. SCV made a return to match grip technique in 1994 under Lee Rudnicki, and continued on with the match grip in 1995, before going back to traditonal in 1996. To all those worrying about SCV and the direction they are taking with their drumline, please remember: Murray Gusseck is an amazing drummer and musician, one of the best percussion teachers and technicians around, a great battery arranger (especially when it comes to designing the exercise program), and MOST importantly, a person truly dedicated to the SCV organization: their traditions, their commitment to excellence, and constant innovation in the field of marching percussion. He is there to teach good percussion technique, quality of sound, musicianship, and instill kids with the values of the Santa Clara Vanguard; regardless of whether or not they march matched grip, traditonal grip, or whatever grip. The program will be just as intense, with a focus on good technique, quality of sound, and producing great music at a professional level, as always. They will be just fine. They had great success with matched grip in the 70's and 80's, and there is no reason why they can't do it again.
  9. Very true. The Cadets had the most polished, "choreographed" stage show of the night. I would like to see more of these stage shows during the season at different venues across the country, especially when the corps do something a little bit different then simply playing a standstill version of their field show. It can be a lot of fun. Especially when you can take advantage of special lighting effects and different acoustics, you might as well have some fun with it and mix it up a bit, like the Cadets did. Hopefully we'll see more shows like this. Speaking of indoor shows, what ever happened to the Concord Pavillion Show in Concord, CA?? This was always done before the regular field show season started, and was a great way to showcase the corps music, the different sections of the corps, and give fans a taste of the season to come. I miss that show!!! Anyways, congrats to all the corps who participated in TOC. Job well done!!!
  10. I agree. They have certainly raised the bar for visual in all aspects: drill writing, marching and execution of that amazing drill, and visual general effect. Starting next season, corps will have to really push the visual/drill envelope to top what the cavaliers put on the field these past few seasons. I have to say, as far as drill is concerned, it seemed to me that Vanguard was next in line behind the Cavies. Great drill design. Difficult, challenging, and interesting stuff, but not performed nearly as well as the Cavies from an execution standpoint, and not nearly as much GE visual. They didn't have me saying "WOW!!" Now musically speaking, SCV had me saying WOW all night long. Great percussion and brass book SCV, and the most beautiful guard I have ever seen!! I hope SCV builds on the amazing musical and colorguard aspects of this past year, and elevates their GE and visual packages to even greater heights in the season to come. I can't wait to see what their 2005 production will be.
  11. Blue Devils took the number one spot tonight. Congratulations. They have a fun show that the audience (and judges) seems to enjoy. It's your standard Blue crew show: jazzy, lots of incredible brass, and attitude. But in my humble opinion, I have three words to say about tonights show to explain how I feel: Santa Clara Vanguard. SCV...yes sir. This is the type of show that brought me to drum corps over 10 years ago. Music in motion. Santa Clara tells a story, and a beautiful one at that. Amazing design, beautiful melodies, and the best drumline in DCI, hands down. Blue Devils just did not do it for me. Too much screaming high brass for my tastes, and not a show I could really get into emotionally. SCV personified class tonight, and I was totally blown away by what I saw on that football field. As far as percussion, I could not understand the tie between BD and SCV. SCV's percussion (both drumline AND Pit) was on fire. Their drum book is incredibly intiricate and musical. Tenor line...WOW!!! I'm not a judge or an expert by any means, so hopefully someone else with more knowledge of these things can shed some light on the scores, and why BD placed so much higher tonight overall. Yes, BD has "attitude" and lots of jazzy, screaming high brass moments. But SCV seemed so much more musical overall, and their visual program seemed to flow so much better tonight. SCV was intense, musical, emotional, and simply breathtaking. In any case, thank you Santa Clara for reminding me what drum corps is all about: passion, emotion, intensity, musicianship, tradition, innovation, and excellence. Great music, great story, great show. I wish you the best in Denver!!!
