  1. This will have NO effect on Open Class...our Quarter Finals are still in Michigan City, and our Semis & Finals will take in the same stadium as World Class.
  2. This isn't going to affect Open Class at all. We are still having quarterfinals in Michigan City, and will still have Semis & Finals at the same stadium World Class is...the only difference is that it will be in Bloomington, not Indy.
  3. ATTENTION GUARD FOLKS...Capital Sound wants YOU! Our 2008 production, "The Neverland," is a visual-based show. Here's your chance to be an integral part of our ensemble. Auditions will take place: MAY 2-4 Wisconsin Heights High School Just North of Madison Contact the Corps Director (that is me) at: corpsdirector@capsound.org
  4. WARNING: (has nothing to do with Memphis Sound...moderator, feel free to make a separate topic) DCI chose to eliminate the "pay for play" system feeling that the charge wasn't in the Open Class' best interest. Of course, with that, the small amount of pool money paid at the end of the season was also eliminated. In addition, the fee that DCI charges to run an Open Class show is considerably smaller mainly because the draw for our shows doesn't quite strike the chord that it would if we had even one World Class. While this is a sad reality, it's reality none-the-less. Now, one of the tasks the Open Class Advisory committee has embarked on, and one that I'm a part of, is to strategize and conceptualize how we can make Open Class shows a good draw, and how we can all market our shows better so that they will get larger crowds and, subsequently, make more money that could be then paid out to our groups. Of course, getting feedback and ideas from the community at-large would also be appreciated (I know I'm opening up Pandora's Box, but what the heck!)... Now, as for the choice to change our name to Open Class...I can only speak for why I/Capital Sound chose to approve that change. My own feelings, and what I opined to the Open Class body, were that the numerical designation, "Division III," gave the false impression that we were the "chum" of the activity...i.e. the worst and least talented. This contributed heavily to our division's difficulty in recruiting. Very few of us had been able to draw the maximum 79 members that the division allowed. Some even fought to even make the 30 necessary to be allowed onto the competitive field. By eliminating the number designation, and focusing on the type of corps we are, we've (Capital Sound) seen a tremendous jump in membership that I believe never would have happened if we had stayed, "Division III." More importantly for the division as a whole, being called Open Class has tremendous potential for making us a unique product within the drum corps activity, which would translate to making our product something that fans will want to see. Hope this sheds some light...
  5. I am, in no way, going to chime in on the main portion of this topic (the issues/concerns with Memphis Sound)... HOWEVER, I do want to clarify some mis-conceptions regarding Open Class fees. Tom is right on FACT #1...Performance fees for individual shows no longer exist. However, FACT #2 & #3 are not correct. We do not receive ANY type of fee for Open Class only shows (not even a revenue share). This was changed prior to the 2007 season. Since DCI's fee for hosting an Open Class show is significantly less than for a World Class show, DCI is not in a position to pay a performance fee. The Open Class Advisory Board is currently exploring ways of fixing this so that everyone can get something for their efforts...especially since fuel is considerably more expensive. ALSO, Open Class will not financially benefit from the Fab-5 package, in that we won't be getting fees from it's purchase. However, it will benefit Open Class in that it will, theoretically, put more butts in seats for Semis & Finals...and help in trimming/eliminating the Open Class budget shortfall with DCI. I would be happy discuss details on any of this stuff with any of you (but, I'd prefer to do it off-line)...

  8. FROM A CAPITAL SOUND PRESS RELEASE... Madison, Wis., September 24, 2007- Following a tremendously successful 2007 season, Capital Sound has made the decision to expand its camp schedule by announcing 2008 rehearsals will take place in Madison and, for the first time ever, Enterprise, Alabama. The new format will start with auditions, which will take place December 7-9 in Madison, one week later (December 14-16) in Alabama. The two camps will continue in January, and again in March. The idea for the Southern camps stems from the established relationship that was formed this past year between the corps and Enterprise High School following the tragic tornado that destroyed the school last March. The corps provided relief supplies for the town, and students from the community joined the corps for the 2007 season. Several more students from the area have expressed interest in joining for 2008, and the idea for the southern camps was created as a vehicle to allow them the opportunity without having to travel north every month. Corps director, Marc Gofstein, and Enterprise High School Assistant Direct Director, Jason Smith, expressed excitement about the joint venture. “This is a great opportunity for Capital Sound to attract members from the southern part of the country,” said Gofstein. “The kids from Enterprise that marched this year have been great ambassadors for us, and they’ve stirred a lot of interest in the area. Having camps in Enterprise will allow us both to make our relationship even stronger.” Smith added his thoughts. “Capital Sound made a tremendous impression on us down here. Our kids had great stories to tell when they got back from tour, and the excitement they conveyed got more kids hungry to march with them. Having them here will really strengthen the bond between our community, and Madison.” Interested students can get more information, and RSVP for the camps, by calling the corps at 608-212-7535, or email corps director Marc Gofstein at corpsdirector@capsound.org. Founded in 1995, Capital Sound is a non-profit youth organization dedicate to the betterment and enrichment of the youth of Madison and the State of Wisconsin through life-skill training, music education and performance.
  9. Hey there... Can't give a fair/balanced review (being a corps director, I'm inclined not to even try)... However, this was a fun show and the fans in attendance were awesome! The four corps that performed (Capital Sound, HYPE, Racine Scouts, and Chops, Inc.) were all received quite warmly...actually, extremely enthusiastically by the crowd of about 400. Originally, Blue Saints were scheduled to perform but, due to membership issues, they withdrew (hope to have them back soon). Racine Scouts performed first with their 80th Anniversary Show and this show, indeed, gets better and better everytime they go out. They have some recent member additions that have really energized them...and, they should do well in Pasadena. HYPE came out with a show based on the "dark side of Oz." This is also a fun show, and their percussion is their strongest caption. The crowd really dug their presentation, and they should also do well in SoCal. Chops, Inc presented their version of Wicked (funny that two of the four shows were Wizard of Oz variations). From the moment they entered the stadium they were entertaining and provoking laughs and applause from the crowd. Simply fun, guys...best of luck at DCA. Capital Sound...OK, I'm biased here. Suffice it to say that our kids had a good run this evening and the crowd response was the best I've heard since the days when I marched in the 80's. And, no, I cannot give a fair review of our show...but I wanted to submit a contribution as I hadn't seen a response to this thread...
  10. Please note that Capital Sound is also attending and, while we are D-III, we are also deserving of being mentioned as a participant.
  11. There is still time to join Capital Sound... Drum Corps in Madison, WI...what an opportunity! There's still a chance to experience it as Capital Sound has a few openings left: Hornline & Guard Can't spend the entire summer marching? Need to work/go to summer school? We're the corps for you. Check out our new look and schedule at: http://www.capsound.org Join us, and make our sound always be heard!
  12. LaSqueegee - Full recordings...basically, you get the whole show (end of Tango isn't finished, so they add some Univited)... Malibu - Yes, it's the same piece...and, this version is hauntingly good...and, transitions well to Kashmir.
  13. As the Director of Capital Sound, I just wanted to add a couple of things here... First off, thanks to everyone who was there...having the stands filled, and with standing room, it was a great chance for both corps to test run their shows. Also, the crowd responses to both shows was awesome. jjeffeory - nice review...thanks for the love, and the great review. Yes, we do have more baritones - as well as more horns as a whole. State solo/ensembles, other school committments, and timing prevented the hornline from being complete - in fact, we were missing slightly less than 1/2 (10 out of 24). However, I was really happy with their performance. As for our percussion, well the percussion gods have really smiled upon us this year. 7sn/4tn/5bs/4cym/8pit. Yes, that's 28 - 4 more than the horns...but, when the horns play out, they project quite nicely, and actually blend well with the large drum line. More importantly is the fact that having both corps got to blend and mingle. Many in the activity put such a reverence on D-I corps, while sometimes slighting the D-II/III groups. Today was a great chance for both corps to realize just how similar they are...and that both share the same desire to experience drum corps to its fullest, with everything that the concept entails. The only difference is size. Not even our talent levels are that different. Kudos to the Scouts and everyone who attended...you gave our members a great response, and jolt of confidence. In turn, while not presenting as much content as Madison, I sincerely hope that we gave you an entertaining glimpse at what Capital Sound will be bringing to the field this year. Like the Scouts, we are looking forward to giving drum corps fans what they want: Entertaining drum corps.

  21. Mr. Fabulous...I am putting here what I posted in another forum posting...I hope this answers your concerns, since you obviously couldn't simply ask a question without adding the little smiley jab ( <**> ) I appreciate the subject of this post, and I feel compelled to elaborate on Capital Sound's decision, and the reasons for both our decision, and the timing of our announcement. As most folks know, Capital Sound was originally a part of the Madison Drum & Bugle Corps Association (MDBCA). From 1995-2003, the corps functioned as a strong D-II corps, and the MDBCA made sure the corps was a strong member of the drum corps community. However, in December of 2003, MDBCA made the decision to discontinue its sponsorship of Capital Sound and the corps was disbanded. The corps parents from Capital Sound reacted immediately by re-establishing the group and forming an independent 501c3 non profit organization...and, Capital Sound has continued since then. The corps went from being a fully supported organization under Madison's umbrella, to one having to suddenly raise money as an individual organization, with very little in the way of assets, and only a handful of folks to run the operation. The main focus for the past two seasons has been to stabilize and grow the corps, while strengthening the Board of Directors and the fundraising operation...all of which have been transpiring quite successfully. Capital Sound finished the 2006 season in strong shape - finishing 9th at D-III semifinals, and financially in the Black (and, no I won't go into details). The Board of Directors then reviewed the logistics and details on what going to California would entail. It would have been easy to make the decision to go (and, since I'm from California, I really wanted to take a corps back to my birthplace)...however, the reality was that it would have been too draining on the corps in every way, and could have resulted in corps "taking a year off," which is a less painful way of saying we fold. Yes, California has been on the table for a while...and, everyone has known about it. However, stabilizing the corps and making it a functioning organization has been the focus for the past two years. With that being accomplished, only then was it appropriate to review going to California, because we didn't want to put the cart before the horse. As for the timing of the announcement, this is when we chose to make it to the universe. However, we dealt with it internally way before we announced it. I'm proud that there was serious thought put into our decision, and that we weighed all possibilities before making our final decision. Capital Sound will have a successful 2007, in-spite of not competing in California. And, we are working to build on the successes of the past two seasons, and develop a strong, entertaining product that will be around for many years to come. I hope that answers your questions...

  23. The following was released this morning. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Madison, Wis., October 29, 2006—After careful consideration and review of logistics and finances, Capital Sound Drum & Bugle Corps has decided to bypass the 2007 DCI Championships in Pasadena. As an alternative, the corps plans an extensive schedule of competitions in DCI’s Central Division, as well as performances throughout the Wisconsin and Illinois region. “It is a fiscally prudent decision that will keep the corps strong for 2007 and beyond,” Gofstein said. “I was aware of this when I took the directorship, and it’s a choice I completely support.” Gofstein discussed the process that took place. “Our board of directors deliberated long and hard,” he continued. “We ended the 2006 season in good organizational shape. However, we concluded that, if we wanted to continue strengthening the corps, we had to sacrifice this trip. There has been some mild disappointment expressed by our current members, but they also understand and support the decision.” Instead, 2007 is viewed as an opportunity to solidify its organization and membership, and interest in the corps is tremendous despite the decision, Gofstein added. Applications and inquiries have come from all over the United States, including the strong marching band areas in California, Florida, Ohio, and Texas. The corps will be conducting an Open House for the 2007 season on Saturday, November 11, in Madison.
