  1. While we're still waiting to see what the numbers are going to be, most likely we will stay D-III, but at the upper limits... Stylistically, we've always wanted to sound and look darker...ala mid-nineties Phantom. Our staff collectively likes the dark, classical sounds and we feel that it would fit well in SoCal...
  2. Website is being updated today...this info came straight from the Director's mouth... And, yes...I still owe you your Hawaiian Shirt (I'm a slacker...I admit it)...
  3. I am kinda curious as to why DCI has this love affair with domed stadiums...the sound produced is not good, and they tend to get muddled with all the sound bouncing around...
  4. The following has just been released by MYSTIKIAL Drum & Bugle Corps Mystikal to Attend 2006 DCI Championships in Madison, Tour Midwest Newbury Park, CA After two successful years competing exclusively on the West Coast, Mystikal Drum & Bugle Corps is proud to announce that, for 2006, they will travel to shows in the Midwest and will appear at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. “We are ready to take the next step in our development,” said Rob Lowery, corps director. “Our philosophy has been slow, progressive development. Our first year saw us compete solely in Southern California, and this past year we added Northern California and Arizona. Well, the baby steps are over with. It’s time for us to see how we stack up against everyone.” Details of the corps’ tour schedule will not be available until next spring, but the organization is using the tour and trip to Championships as a major component of their recruitment drive. In addition to its Southern California schedule, including traditional shows in San Diego, Walnut and Riverside, and their own show in the Simi Valley area, Mystikal is looking at possible Midwest shows in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. More information about the corps and its upcoming events can be found at www.mystikal-corps.org Founded in 2003, Mystikal Drum & Bugle Corps is a drum and bugle corps organized to serve as an additional musical venue for musicians who wish to participate in the DCI competitive arena while attending summer school or being employed. The corps is a part of the Mystikal Youth Performing Arts Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promote the existence and welfare of the performing arts through social events, music, marching, and competitive performances.
  5. The following has just been released by Mystikal Drum & Bugle Corps: MYSTIKAL Forms New Youth Performing Art Group in Southern Ventura County Breaks Away From Dream Association Newbury Park, CA After two extremely successful years on the field, Mystikal Drum & Bugle Corps has made the decision to expand its organization by forming the Mystikal Youth Performing Arts Association (MYPAA), a year-round group dedicated to enhancing and enriching the opportunities and experiences for youth interested in the performing arts in Southern Ventura County. Rob Lowery, Corps Director, expressed excitement about the new organization. “I am really looking forward to this new, expanded group. In the two years that the corps has been on the field, we’ve seen wonderful growth. This venture is the next logical step in that growth. By providing a year-round group, with an Independent winter guard and a indoor percussion ensemble, we can provide the youth in our backyard a venue for them to develop and perfect their talents.” With the formation of MYPAA, Mystikal ends the two-year relationship with the Dream Association, the non-profit group that first sponsored and supported the corps. “While we’re sad on many levels to be leaving Dream Association, the plusses definitely outweigh the minuses. However, we can’t ever forget that Dream was there for us from the beginning. That’s something we’ll always remember. We thank them and hope they continue to grow and prosper.” Founded in 2003, Mystikal Drum & Bugle Corps is a drum and bugle corps organized to serve as an additional musical venue for musicians who wish to participate in the DCI competitive arena while attending summer school or being employed. The corps is a part of the Mystikal Youth Performing Arts Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promote the existence and welfare of the performing arts through social events, music, marching, and competitive performances.
  6. Just curious as to where I send a press release for DCP to post. thanks
  7. Just spotted the following in the recap of the DCI Winter Meetings, held this past weekend in Chicago... "In other business matters, the Board of Directors renewed the Division I competitive status of Pacific Crest of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Esperanza of San Diego, Calif. Pursuant to the DCI By-laws, the board of directors voted unanimously to terminate the membership of the Troopers from Casper, Wyo., due to internal and external compliance issues, spanning several years." What exactly does this mean? Are the Troopers being forced into D-II? or, will they be given another chance to petition to get back into D-I? I really would be disappointed if they were forced into D-II...on the other hand, maybe it would give the organization an opportunity to stabilize their finances and resources and get stronger. Anybody out there know the details of this?
  8. Hey...some of us can't log on here so much during our work day...beside, Sam, I wanted see just how many of these myths you were going to personally debunk :P :P :P . And, yes...Dave marched next to me during that season...or, in the case of Stillwater, MN...FELL next to me... ^0^ ^0^ ^0^
  9. Uh, Sam...I was a part of that corps too and, being one of the gay guys in the hornline, can tell you that it was probably a lot closer to 80% straight/20%gay. Oh, and btw... To dispell yet another one of those nasty rumors... NO...Madison, nor Cavaliers EVER had a couples bus.
  10. No...this is NOT the best news for SCV in 20 years. Myron has been one of the activities best drill writers for a longer period of time. Yes, he's had a blip, or two...but, please, who doesn't? And, while this past season wasn't even close to being his best work, it doesn't necessarily mean it was his fault. A lot of aspects to the 2005 SCV product were controlled by the Programing leadership, which (from many accounts) tied the creative hands of the designers. I'm totally confident that Myron will add a majorly creative spark to Madison. Yes, it's way too early to speculate just how much stronger Madison is going to be (or, even if they will finish higher). One thing's for sure: Myron Rosander will be sorely missed at SCV, but Madison is definitely going to benefit. Good luck, Myron!
  11. As someone who has interacted with this group many times the past couple of seasons, let me add something OTHER than the competitive angle... The Academy is one of the classiest organizations in the activity today. Their staff is friendly, outgoing and thoroughly positive in their approach to the activity, their kids carry themselves with poise and dignity - always applauding other groups -, and their support/booster group is simply fantastic. Their performance quality is amazing for a group still in their developmental stage but, more importantly, they are a 100% classy group...and, for me THAT is what's more important. Go for it...and, good luck.
  12. The broadcast wasn't nearly as horrid as was conveyed to me... However, I would have changed a few things: 1. Like most other folks...I say longer clips, and make them more what the corps' show was like, don't just start at some point cause it might be cool. 2. Get rid of the two field interviewers and bring in some folks who can actually ask decent questions. James Landrum was tolerable at times, and nowhere near as annoying as the Theater Broadcast ("the hype in the grass" will forever be remembered for its sheer strangeness). However, can't remember who the female former BD member was, but she was simply DREADFUL. She would have been better suited for the ESPN2 Cheerleading Championships. 3. Show the Drum Corps map...and explain the different levels (D-I, DII, DIII). 4. Like the Cheerleading Championships - and DCI normally - give the results at the end...and, ACTUALLY ANNOUNCE THEM. That's my 2cents... But, it still was cool to have it on cable, rather than PBS...here's to a refined product next year.
  13. I'm SOOOOO in!!! Didn't see them after they left California...but, if GMichael was blown away, I'VE GOT TO BE A PART OF THAT!!!
  14. YES!!!! I can see it now: Guest performer: Shirley Whitcomb (I'm not suggesting Ms. Whitcomb is a bitter, rotting corpse out for revenge...just figuring an elder member of the drum corps family would work out...and I'll always love "Ma Drum Corps.")
  15. 1986 was the year SCV really started with the theatrics...costumes, props, etc. The magic trick was indeed the levitation (as was mentioned by a previous poster)...excellent stuff. Now...the judge's comment was made early in the year at the Stockton Show (Moonlight Classic). Dr. Dave Richards, I believe was the judge, doing GE-Music (as it was called back then). As we were building up to the big push in Great Gate of Kiev, Dr. Dave was commenting that he like the build up, but didn't know if we could sustain it...then, we hit the big push with a solid wall of sound, and Dr. Dave interupted what he was saying to exclaim, "S***...HOLY S***!" I will never forget that, so long as I live.
  16. Awe...shucks!!! Someone remembered... '85 was, not only awesome, but also fun to march!!! A few others: '83 Garfield: The Rocky Point reprise & crowd response! '84 Madison: The end push of Memory...WHAT ENERGY! '86-89 SCV: The magic tricks were pure genius. '86 SCV: Anytime you get a judge to say, "S***. HOLY S***!" on a tape, it's gotta be amazing. I agree...there are SOOOOOOO many others...but, thought I'd chime in with these.
  17. ^OO^ ^OO^ ^OO^ EXCELLENT!!! I love the "This is Sportscenter" commercials...and this one would be awesome to see!
  18. :D :D :D You are correct, Sir!!!
  19. Blue Devils - 2006: "Kentucky Derby of the Century." All Bluegrass music...the guard in fine Southern attire, all adorned with bonets...and the narration can actually be the calling of horse race...along with real horses. <<the preceding was supposed to be humorous>> SERIOUSLY, though - JAZZ=Music of the eighties...in the 21st Century. Make it some face peeling charts that can highlight a blistering hornline, smokin' drumline, and awesome guard...THAT would be the BD we all know and love.
  20. Well, Madison in 2006 is only using Camp Randall...not a separate one for DII/III. If they go with that formula, then there won't be an issue... If, on the other hand, they go with the two-stadium concept, I have a perfect location: Pasadena City College. They have new turf, it's close to the Rose Bowl, it's the same stadium that the Tournament of Roses Band Festival is performed in...and it's a reasonably sized facility. Either way, it should work out pretty well.
  21. Wait just a moment... Let me see...SCV gets overly scrutinized by the judges ALL SEASON LONG (and, somewhat justifiably so)...then, all of a sudden, on finals night, decides to miraculously reward them because some DCI bee buzzed in their collective ears? :lolhit: :lolhit: :lolhit: That's the best one I've heard in a long time!!!
  22. Ryan...This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. The East Coast DII/III's and the Midwest DII/III's should get together and form a partnership to pool resources and team up to get out here. In fact, I would say that the West Coast groups should do the same thing when traveling back to the Midwest/East. It would benefit in sharing housing costs, bus costs...AND it would go a long way in making sure the maximum number of smaller corps got out to Pasadena. Heck, I'd even volunteer to research funding options. Just my 2 cents...
  23. Worst ending ever? Gimme a break... The corps had an awesome season with an incredible show. Sixth place is nothing to be down about...especially when you consider who placed higher (with the exception of BD - a show I really didn't care for, but a show that was performed well). Madison '05 will be remembered as being a wonderful show, with a great concept. Here's to a great show, guys...and looking forward to '06.
  24. THIS is the exposure drum corps needs to attract new fans/members...NOT WOODWINDS (had to get a dig in...the thread was going WAY too smoothly)...
