Mitch has designed for several other bands in Thailand. Mitch was invited to Singapore by the Deyi Secondary School Marching Band, the 2008 Champion of the Singapore Youth Festival marching competition, the country’s premier marching band championship. He traveled to Singapore in 2008 and 2009 to teach marching fundamentals, show design, drill design, rehearsal techniques and more. In 2010, marching one of Mitch’s designs, Deyi once again captured the top spot at the Singapore Youth Festival. Guardians partner with Identity Winterguard to found a new nonprofit organization "Independent Creative Arts Network" or "iCAN" Over the past year, Johnathan Doerr, director of the Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps, and Jaime Martinez, director of Identity Winterguard, have been steadily working on forming a new nonprofit organization in Central Texas that will serve as a beacon for the visual and performing arts in the region. This effort has been in the making for many months as the pair began searching for a trustworthy and business-minded board of directors. After many months of hard work and planning, the new organization “Independent Creative Arts Network” or “iCAN” has been formed. The Guardians are in their second year of operation, first year of affiliation with Open Class pending their evaluation. The Guardians have settled themselves in the diverse town of Seguin, TX. This decision has been very beneficial to the Guardians. Local businesses and other nonprofits in the area have gathered behind Guardians and helped establish funding sources, such as bingo, in the area as well as help supply Guardians with housing and volunteer manpower. “The collaborative efforts of Identity and Guardians have been very exciting. I firmly believe that we are moving towards a bright future as we look to further the longevity of both groups,” says the director of the Guardians, Johnathan Doerr. “Jaime has become a great friend of mine as well as a wise mentor. Jaime and the Identity organization has a vision for iCAN that is in accord with my own, and I couldn’t think of a better individual or organization to work with to establish this new nonprofit business.” 2014 marks the 7th season of Identity and their winter programs. Identity is a 2013 Independent A Class Finalist and the 2013 Independent Open World Champions. As champions, Identity's top team has been promoted to WGI's World Class designation. Jaime Martinez, director for Identity, had this to say about the new partnership. "With our continued tradition of excellence, the search was on to build a relationship with a like-minded organization to help bring Identity to a more secure financial situation. Having the same competitive goals was important, but more important was teaming with a group that is professional, educational, and has the same organizational goals. Johnathan Doerr and the Guardians have shown to be that organization and we are excited to grow together." Guardians and Identity have both seen success throughout this time of economic stress and believe that merging the organizations under the new nonprofit business will yield very positive results. Each organization is an asset to their area and has connections that will push each other towards a future of longevity, successful business practices, and most importantly, a truly superior visual and performing arts experience. Corps Director, Johnathan Doerr, is ecstatic for everything that has been happening behind the scenes with Guardians as they prepare for open class. Watch out for the Guardians this summer as they request to go on a southern tour under Drum Corps International's "open class" division. Doerr feels that the Guardians have an all star staff that looks to boost the Guardians' performance level to a whole new level. 14. http://www.arizonaacademy.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=452:announcing-the-2014-design-team&catid=37:news&Itemid=94 Anybody take a look at their staff this year? Their design team alone is already killer. Crown's main designer and their music arranger, and one of the Blue Devils drill writers. That alone is a great start. They have a great visual staff coming in, brass staff is almost identical to previous years so the technique should be the same. Most of the perc staff is coming back, which means Ike is returning for his 3rd year, should be AWESOME! And the new guard staff looks very promising. I really hope they can bounce back from this previous season, the main excuse for the scores last year was the design, looks like the problem should be solved now. How do you guys think they will do in 2014?

  18. The Centurions are pleased to announce their 2014 Program: The Journey Join the Centurions as they leave their home in search of exotic new lands. The journey begins as they set off through the streets of the Great Roman Empire. Their departure is announced by the triumphant strains of the third movement of Respighi's Fountains of Rome, which is heralded in by proud trumpet fanfares from the far reaches of the field. Our regiment continues their march east, only barely avoiding being drawn into a fierce battle between Serbia and the Ottoman Empire. Tchaikovsky's March Slav is heard as the Centurions play witness to both the savage battle and glorious victory of the Serbian people. Though the sun may not shine equally on this battlefield, the melodic alto voice of the corps' mellophone section and its beautiful counter in the baritone section carry forth the story of this heroic struggle. Letting go of past differences, the corps is fed a hot meal by the King of the Great Persian Empire. It is here that they meet Scheherazade, a Queen whose beauty is only surpassed by her wit. The company finds it difficult to continue their journey, not wanting to depart these magical lands until Scheherazade's stories have ended. It is in “The Young Prince & The Young Princess” that the corps finds inspiration, interweaving the gentle harmonies of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade together to form the perfect ballad for their second season on the field. At long last, the Centurions have found a place worthy of their journey. Arriving in the city of Gath, the crew's curiosity if immediately piqued by the Temple of Dagon... or more specifically by the exotic music flowing from it. The “Bacchanale” from Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Samson & Delilah brings the corps' journey to a fast-paced conclusion, complete with percussion features, dizzying guard work, and even a few surprises. Join the Centurions as they roam through the eastern hemisphere in pursuit of greatness! Get more info on our show, meet staff and members, and find out how to be part of "The Journey" in 2014 by joining us at our OPEN HOUSE on Saturday, November 30th from 1-5pm in Feeding Hills, MA! 23. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 13, 2013. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is returning to the field of competition with a show entitled, “A New Dawn, a New Day.” Renowned for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, this year’s song selections will not disappoint our fans or members. The Skyliners have selected songs that contributed significantly to the history of jazz: “Feeling Good”, “Blue Skies”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, “Round Midnight”, and “Caravan”. “Feeling Good” is probably best known for Nina Simone’s 1965 rendition. Simone was widely associated with jazz, and she earned the title, ‘High Priestess of Soul’. This Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse song was written for the 1964 musical ‘The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd’ and has also been covered by great performers such as Michael Bublé. The Skyliners have chosen Bublé’s swing version of this song to open their 2014 show. Expect to hear strong percussion, featured brass players, the rush that one would expect from this song. Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” was written in 1926 as part of the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. “Blue Skies” was such an enormous success that history says that the opening night audience demanded 24 encores of this tune! It also it became one of the first songs to be featured in a talkie, when Al Jolson performed it in ‘The Jazz Singer’. Performers who recorded this Berlin song include a Who’s Who of the most famous singers in America. The Skyliners’ rendition will bring a contemporary feel to this jazz classic. “It Ain’t Necessarily So” was written by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and comes from their opera, “Porgy and Bess.” Notable performances of this song by the character Sportin' Life, include Cab Calloway on stage and Sammy Davis, Jr. in the 1959 film. While this is familiar ground – the Skyliners played Porgy and Bess before – the 2014 rendition will be bluesy and full of emotion and passion. “Round Midnight” is a 1944 jazz standard by pianist Thelonious Monk. Monk wrote this song when he was 18 years old, but did not record it until many years later. In 1946, Dizzy Gillespie added his famous introduction and cadenza for his big band arrangement, which proved so popular that Monk added it (albeit an altered version) to his own performance, making it a standard part of the song. One critic called “Round Midnight” a “darkly beautiful” ballad with an “after-hours” feel that manages to sound fresh and original decade after decade. JazzStandards.com noted that “Round Midnight" is the most-recorded jazz standard composed by a jazz musician. “Caravan” is a well known jazz standard made popular by Duke Ellington in 1936, and composed by Juan Tizo, a trombonist with Ellington’s band. Due to its ability to conjure up mental pictures of distant and exotic places, “Caravan” became one of the Ellington’s orchestra’s first efforts to incorporate influences from other cultures into its music. Dramatic percussion effects, a winding and meandering melody, and Latin American rhythms make “Caravan” memorable on many different levels. We invite you to be a part of something exciting that is new and old, and help bring this celebrated drum corps back into the field of competition. No stock charts, more affordable dues than other corps, and an after school/work and weekend experience you will not forget!
