  5. Since we've had electronics and amplification around for several years, let's discuss it's use in 2014 shows and how effective it was. I figure we can catagorize it in the following uses: Amplifying / Altering traditional DCI accoustic sounds (brass, battery, pic) Amplifying / Altering live voice Use of prerecorded voice Use of prerecorded sound effects Use of synthesized traditional non-DCI instruments (piano, guitar, organ) Use of other traditional synth sounds (bass, synth strings) Any other uses?
  6. The Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps and the directors of the feature length documentary “Scouts Honor: Inside A Marching Brotherhood” are pleased to announce a special screening of the film in Concord, California. On Wednesday, May 13, 2015, the movie will be shown at the Brenden Theatres located at 1985 Willow Pass Road in Concord. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the film will start at 7:00 p.m. Also appearing for a Q&A session after the screening will be director/producer Mac Smith and co-producer John “JT” Torrijos. Tickets are $10.00 and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Blue Devils “C” Corps. As a special bonus, all ticket holders will receive a FREE small popcorn and a $9.00 voucher for a future movie at Brenden Theatres! There will be a limited number of tickets available at the theater on the day of the screening, so it is suggested that you buy tickets on-line beforehand. The directors of the film, both alumni of the Madison Scouts, have long wanted to make a documentary on the marching music activity and the Madison Scouts in particular, having realized years ago what an impact such an intense activity performed at such a young age had on their lives outside of music. Their goal is to raise awareness of positive youth activities, like drum corps, which craft young people into better adults which will ultimately benefit society. One of the aspects of the documentary that the filmmakers are particularly proud of is the sound recordings of the Madison Scouts’ field performances. Co-producer John “JT” Torrijos recorded the live performances with 5.1 audio mixing in mind, wanting to allow the listening audience in the theater to experience these powerful performances as if they were on the 50 yard line of an actual show. The filmmakers are convinced that anyone who watches the documentary in a theater will get pulled into the personal stories that they follow, as well as the “wow factor” of the live performance sound recordings that will keep audience members on the edge of their seats. The Blue Devils “C” corps is made up of kids in Northern California between the ages of 8 and 14 and they perform both in parades and field shows throughout the Spring and Summer. They can be seen at both the Stanford show and the Blue Devils “Family Day” along with both the “A” and “B” corps. To learn more about "Scouts Honor," including the movie trailer, character bios, filmmaker bios, and news items, visit: Please spread the word by utilizing the "invite" tool built into the Facebook Event Page for this screening. 7. Ever thought about each member of Blue Devils has a very distinct style and appearance? Do they audition people based on how they look too? Because almost all of them are attractive. Or is it just the fact that they are from California they have this natural celebrity look? Anybody have other thoughts?

  11. Murphy, Juwan Carolina Crown, Baritone Hello, I'm new to this community but my name is Juwan Murphy and I am currently a sophomore music performance and education major at the University of Central Florida with my focus on trombone. I started with music early with the piano in elementary school and in middle school joined the band in 7th grade and have been playing trombone since then. Ever since I started high school I have been intrigued by drum corp. The amount of talent and dedication that must of went in to achieve the feats that some did to me was incredible. As I started to get more into drum corp I began to love the sound that the crown brass had and could only dream of ever being a part of the horn line. I was always a great player but just the sheer amount of money that was required to participate in the groups made ever joining one seem impossible. After graduating highschool and working on my own I decided to take a leap of faith and audition for the corp of my dream Carolina Crown in 2014. Although showing potential I was cut the February camp and I was devastated. This disappointment only made me drive more and this year I re-auditioned got a contract! This will be my first year marching drum corp and as a 20 year old this is one of my last chances. I had believed the hard part was out of the way but realizing the limited work schedule I had due to school it caused my severe lack of funds and even though all of my money has gone to the corp that I made I was still severely behind on payments. Just in tuition alone I have $1,575 left to pay not to mention my camp fee, spring training, and uniform fees left. If you were to decide to donate your donation however small will greatly help me accomplish my dreams and give me a music educational experience I will always remember which would mean the world to me. To help you would need to follow this link to the Crown store and put my name down in the member name field at this link: Also here is the Carolina Crown main website to find out more info on the corp: Also I will leave my email address here to contact me directly for any more info: Please consider donating or possibly sharing this with someone who would like to donate and continue to grow drum corps. Be blessed :) Juwan Murphy
  12. Hello, my name is Alexis Macy. I have been contracted to march baritone with the Sacramento Mandarins for their 2015 season. This is a major dream come true for me because I have always wanted to march with a corps, but I never though I could because Im primarily a flute player. I had taught myself baritone (I have been playing for about 9 months now) and I never thought I wouldve been good enough. But now I have been contracted and I have the chance to live my dream. However, there are a lot of fees associated with drum corps. My tour fees plus round trip flight for April is $1600. I am in desperate need for help with this fee. My parents are doing all they can, but they also have financial committments, which means it is up to me to try to raise the funds. If you, or anyone you know could possibly help, I have a gofundme account with which you can donate. My gofundme is Any donation is greatly appreciated! Please, I really need help. It would be heartbreaking if I couldnt march my dream due to lack of finances. Thank you!

  16. I was planning on trying out for cavaliers in the future and was wondering if I can use my TAMA by Kanstul Mellophone. They are different than most mellos in the way that they have a full horn kicker and not individual valves, they sound different than your everyday mello, and they're smaller and different looking but only when at a carry, the bell looks just like a yamaha or king from the front. this may cause some differences in appearance the corps may not like but I'm not sure. If someone could help me on this issue, it would be appreciated greatly, thanks. I own no rights to the picture posted.
  17. "Scouts Honor" is a documentary film that follows the 2012 Madison Scouts on their journey from audition camp to finals night. It follows 3 members, one from the brass line, one from the drumline, and one in the colorguard, throught their personal struggles and stories about their experience within the organization. Two alumni who are professionals in the movie industry are the filmmakers. It's been doing well in the small festival circuit, but currently, distribution is limited to a theater on-demand style. I have requested a screening in DeKalb, IL, home of Northern Illinois University, 60 miles west of Chicago. If the film pre-sells at least 45 more tickets, it will take place on Thurs. February 26 at 7:30 p.m. No one is charged for the $10 ticket until the screening tips. This film is not just for Scouts fans. Anyone with an appreciation for drum corps and the marching arts will enjoy this film. I have seen a rough cut and it looks and sounds great. The screening will take place in the historic, restored Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb, home to many nice restuarants, bars, and shopping. Please consider supporting local business, independent filmmakers, and the marching arts activity by attending this screening! Often referred to as marching band on steroids, drum and bugle corps pushes young people to extreme levels, both physically and mentally -- all for one 11-minute performance. All three young men march with the Madison Scouts from Madison, Wisconsin. The strong brotherhood of this all-male organization helps them through their struggles and celebrates their triumphs. 20. Action Wipes all natural wet wipes is doing a sale for the new year, 20% off with code "FEST2015" This product is really useful for members and spectators all year round, for after rehearsals or at shows. Wet wipes that use all natural ingredients and can be repurposed later on after wash, smell great and don't leave a sticky residue like most baby wipes. Wish I had these when I was marching.
  21. The Vanguard Cadets Brass and Visual Staff will be hosting their annual clinic/workshops on November 16th & 23rd for all local prospective or returning brass players looking to audition for either the Santa Clara Vanguard and/or Vanguard Cadets this December. The schedule for both days is 9-12:00PM visual time, with 12-1:00PM lunch on your own, and the 1-4pm brass.
