  1. Hello! I'm thinking about auditioning for BD synth, and had a couple of questions. 1. About how many people usually audition for synth? 2. Do you have to know MainStage? 3. Would a piece like Chopin's Prelude in B minor (op. 28 no. 6) be okay? (https://musescore.com/classicman/scores/68550) If not, what kind of piece would be suitable to audition with? I assume that it shouldn't last more than 2 minutes, but I could be wrong. 4. What is the audition process like? 5. When did you hear back from BD? Thank you for all your help!
  2. Colts 2019 (When Hell Freezes Over) Mandarins 2018 (and some might say 2019) Music City 2018 (Hell on Wheels) Crown 2015 (Inferno) SCV 2011 (The Devil's Staircase) Seems to be a pretty popular theme. Any ideas why? (Thinking too much about the Texas tour, maybe?)
  3. Hey all, not sure if this is the right way to do this, but I'm looking for a specific recording of BD playing "Legend". I'm not asking for a pirated copy. I just have no idea which performance I'm looking for and was hoping someone might know which recording I'm talking about so I can track it down and get it for myself. Plus, this is IMO the absolute best performance of "Legend" I've heard and you guys should check it out too once I figure out what it is. Every time I try and search for it I always find the wrong recordings so I'd figured I'd ask. Short story - I had a recording of what sounds like an alumni BD group playing this a long time ago. I got it online so I'm not sure of the source, but I have since lost it. Now I have no idea where to find it, what year it is, or what specific performance it was part of. Some details about it that make it stand out as IMO the best recording of them playing it I've heard: * It sounds like an indoor performance with a live audience. I remember a few people shouting "BLUE" at the beginning of the track. * It seems like this was an alumni group. The recording starts with an actual drumset solo (and I can't honestly remember if there was a battery involved). * The mellophone (though it could be marching F horn) solo is godly, especially the very end of it when the chorus comes back. Completely rips through the ensemble. * There's two sops screaming at the end and both of them slide up to the top on the very last note at a huge dynamic level while holding on. That's about all the details I got. Thanks for your help, and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask for this. Figured I'd pop back in here in case anyone knows what I'm talking about.
  4. Offered for sale is a collection of drum corps drumline writing that spans several decades from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cadences, warm-ups, exercises and random bids from some of the greatest percussion arrangers ever to put their beats on a football field for Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Midwest and dozens of other regional circuits back in the day. This collection is over 100 pages from percussion arrangers such as Marty Hurley, Tom Sorensen, Russ Weber, Dennis Delucia, John Wooton, Brian Dufour, Jeff Prosperie, Bart Dixion writing for corps such as Phantom Regiment, Pioneer, Bridgemen, Colts, Blue Devils, Cavaliers, etc. A great historical collection of drumline beats to help build your chops for auditions and the upcoming marching season. All of the arrangements are in page protectors and shipped in a three ring binder. This is also posted on Ebay and you can view photos there. https://www.ebay.com/itm/153353723429 Thanks for looking and feel free to ask any questions.

  6. (OK, maybe some hyperbole there, but read on!) These were Carolina Crown's percussion scores in Finals for the five years prior to last season: 2012 -- 18.800 (6th) 2013 -- 18.700 (6th) 2014 -- 18.450 (7th) 2015 -- 18.950 (5th) 2016 -- 18.675 (5th) (As given at the From the Pressbox website, which does seem to lop off decimals from time to time.) In those five years, it was repeatedly said on these forums and elsewhere (even by the commentators on the cinema screenings) that Crown's percussion was weak, bad, faulty, deficient, imperfect, defective, inferior, poor, lame, inadequate, shoddy, and so forth. And not just relatively bad but absolutely bad. I remember querying this point on more than one occasion. I noted that these are all Box 5 scores and thus, by any absolute measure, Crown was fielding very strong percussion lines. But no, came the replies: it wasn't just that Crown's percussion wasn't as strong as Crown's other elements or as other corps' percussion or that it was (with one exception) keeping them from a championship or medals position; no: Crown's percussion was just not good. That claim was made repeatedly. So these appear to be the five best scores achieved by DCI percussion this past weekend: 17.50 -- Cavaliers 17.50 -- Carolina Crown 17.25 -- Blue Devils 17.20 -- Santa Clara Vanguard 17.20 -- Boston Crusaders (I may have missed one or more, but you get the point. Again I used From the Pressbox as my source.) Not one Box 5 score among them, and yet commentators here are offering a fair bit of praise for these lines. But if you had a time machine and could drop any one of these corps of last weekend into the 2012-2016 Finals, surely their percussion would be crushed by Finals-Crown of those years . . . Wouldn't they? I'm genuinely curious to know what people think about that. Are these 2018 mid-season percussion scores too low? Were Crown's 2012-2016 Box 5 Finals percussion scores too high? That is to say: do Cavaliers right now actually have a Box 5 percussion section? And did Crown by Finals in 2012-2016 still have a Box 4 percussion section (or worse)? (How much improvement in numbers is real, relative to the descriptions on the sheets, and how much is just numbers management?) Or when people say that Crown's percussion as the 2012-2016 seasons ended was bad, is that a serious exaggeration? In scoring terms, where is the dividing line between good percussion and bad percussion anyway? Was Crown's percussion ever very good in those years? Is Cavaliers' percussion section already very good? Feel free to apply any of those questions to other elements or to corps as a whole. Already people are talking about how they have listened to this or that early season performance repeatedly. Does anyone do that with a poor performance? At what point, as far as scores are concerned, does a corps become worth listening to? I look forward to everyone's thoughts.

  9. Hi everyone, as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary. Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts, and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!
  10. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Impulse Pacific Crest v.s. Oregon Crusaders Colts v.s. Academy Oregon Crusaders v.s. Spirit of Atlanta Again, these are just my predictions. What are your predictions? Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  11. I watched BD on YouTube from DCI Texas (thank you to whoever uploaded it---great job). I'm not a big fan of BD, but their show is a total winner and they will be DCI Champs this year. The "OTL" beginning with the "One-Eyed Sailor" drum ditty sent chills up my spine. Again, I'm not a fan of these "muscle-shirt" uniforms and no hats BUT this is BD's year to lose. No way SCV or CC catches them. Congrats, BD!
  12. What the heck is up with corps in which members are wearing no hats or shakos? The hat/shako was the crowing point of a uniform and truly identified a corps. Especially The Vanguard. Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I'm not liking this trend in DCI at all.
  13. So it's the beginning of July. We've got a pretty good idea what most of the corps are doing and what many of them have achieved so far. The sleek new uniforms have been revealed, crazy props dragged all over the field, and people are lining up the strollers in the front row in baby-throwing anticipation. I'm always lurking and reading, and from what I can tell, these are the 5 corps with the most hype right now. (In no particular order) Mandarins - These guys have been slowly building a contender the past few years. They've got a great show design and performers that are keeping up with the demand Can they push their way into the top 12 this year? Bluecoats - Their show design is top notch. They're using that zig-zaggy prop in crazy creative ways. You won't be able to buy a bowler hat anywhere in the US come August. Blue Devils - A brass book that's got more runs than after a trip to Taco Bell. The visual is a step behind, but they are already executing at a high level. No one ever counts out BD. SCV - A really complete show design with medalist potential. They're easily keeping up with BD's scores out on the west coast. The circles are the bomb and they use them SO well. Boston Crusaders - They've been running with the new staff hype for a while, and so far they've delivered. Great music and high visual demand. How far up can they go? What do you think? Did I miss someone? Is there a corps that we haven't seen yet that'll make even bigger waves? (OC, Cascades, Surf) This is just my opinion, feel free to debate and discuss.
  14. I just realized something BIG about the planned 2017 tour schedule. BD and SCV aren't listed for the Sacramento Show (Moonlight Classic) on Saturday, June 24. What the WHAT? I hope this is a mistake - there are going to be MANY disappointed people, as both corps have many members and alumni from the greater Sacramento area. The only listed groups are Academy, Blue Knights, Golden Empire, Mandarins, Pacific Crest, and Phantom. Why aren't BD or SCV (or BDB, BDC, or Vanguard cadets) performing?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
  15. I thought I'd start a new thread with the show's current title for the discussion of the actual show. The TV Listings for October 5th are available and this is what it says as a description of the first episode: (Source: Zap2It.com) Close Clash of the CorpsEpisode: Marchin Music's Major League Premiere Special PREMIERE NEW S01, E01 The Blue Devils and The Cadets struggle with auditions, training, and anxiety, but still find time to party.
  16. Ten corps tonight, on the following schedule (MDT): 7:30 p.m. Thunder 7:47 p.m. Battalion 8:04 p.m. Columbians 8:21 p.m. Golden Empire 8:38 p.m. Gold 8:55 p.m. intermission 9:15 p.m. Cascades 9:32 p.m. Oregon Crusaders 9:49 p.m. Santa Clara Vanguard 10:06 p.m. Blue Devils 10:23 p.m. Blue Knights NWS says weather will be mostly clear, with temperatures dropping from about 88F to 78F over the course of the show. If you're there, please let us know about it!
  17. Everyone knows the Blue Devils are often the class of the field in design, and their uniforms are no exception. What are your favorite looks since moving on from the traditional jackets in 1994? 1994-2014: An absolute classic which broke from tradition and perfectly exemplifies the dominant "Star Trek: The Next Generation" style of 90s/2000s uniforms. Worn for 4 championship seasons. 2004-2005: An underappreciated look, IMO. Classy jacket but not too different from the old ones. 2006-2008: Introduction of asymmetrical white stripes. 2009: The beginning of increasingly flamboyant designs with the now-standard half-skirt-cape in a strikingly contrasting color. Also, big white plumes. 2010-2011: A lot of stripes. 2012: Colorful undershirts for this innovative and strange show. Jackets applied later were similar to 2010-2011. 2013: Added feathers are classy but slightly whimsical. Less busy jackets. Split-color uniforms and the new shiny-square shakos. 2015: A lot of color for "INK" 2016: Also different shades, can't see the half-skirt-cape's blue to black fade. Blue feather. Interesting cascading layers.
  18. What an incredible show! Huge crowd, every Corps put forth a good show, and the weather cooled down in the evening. A perfect summer evening! Below are my thoughts. Feel free to ask questions. The talent level and performance of ALL corps is simply unreal - if anyone thinks Drum Corps is dying, well... you clearly aren't seeing what I am seeing. Wahoo! I didn't take notes, just writing from memory, so please forgive the lack of detail. Open Class Golden Empire - Bakersfield, CA -This Open Class corps is doing great things! I'm glad they are expanding their tour this year and hope they make it to championships next year. Blue Devils C - Concord, CA -Cute, Adorable. What else can you say? Blue Devils B - Concord, CA -Drumline is insane, rest of the show was good; I enjoyed it, but a lack of "wow moments" for me. Feels like the show has limited room to grow Vanguard Cadets - Santa Clara, CA -Great show! I had them slightly ahead of BDB tonight (just checked the scores, I was right!) I think this show has a lot of room to grow World Class Corps Mandarins - Sacramento, CA -They have been on a rise the past few years and continue that trend again this year. They have never looked or sounded this good, this early ever. A very special shout-out to the guard who is MILES ahead of previous years. The corps moves a lot this year which is an improvement from last year. I really wish they would stop using original music, which it is good, I feel like using relatable music might be the hook that pushes them up a few slots. I think they were better than Pacific Crest. It will be interesting to see where this show goes this year. The Academy - Tempe, AZ -Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night. The show connects so well with the audience, I believe it will be a fan favorite all season. Not only is the show entertaining, it looks beautiful and sounds beautiful. Unchained Melody was one of the most beautiful moments of the entire night. Huge crowd reaction! Call me crazy, but I think this show might be a dark horse to make finals. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA In the past, I feel like PC's show design has held this corps back - this year, I think it is much improved. Their show is called UNION and is about how the railroad connected America. I liked it, but I don't think there is enough there to propel the corps forward this year. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI Judas! This show had a,lot of power. Madison is starting very strong this year. Some good moments, especially when the crowd gets into the familiar music from Jesus Christ Superstar. Emotional show. Big step up this year for Madison. Very strong guard! Blue Devils - Concord, CA -The other surprise of the night (for me!) was that I enjoyed BD's show! They move A LOT. The guard spins A LOT. So much talent in this corps, especially the guard and drumline. I don't mean this as any kind of a knock, but I don't know if this show has the potential to win a championship. I feel like it's missing something to make it truly special. I fell like Bluecoats and Crown will be battling with BD all season. Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA -I call this show Elegant Nature. Very beautiful show. I know nothing about pit, but WOW - the their feature beginning of the show is so pretty. The hornline is FANTASTIC. So beautiful. I think this show was so enjoyable to watch. Not that they went anywhere, but I feel like SCV is back! Blue Knights - Denver, CO -I love glitter, so therefore I liked this show :) They sounded beautiful. I don't want to sound crazy, but I think they might have one of the strongest horn lines in DCI. The guard was also great and their multi-colored flags were so pretty. Some of the vocal tracks seemed a little disjointed, but perhaps it will all make sense once the full show is on the field.Their show wasn't finished, so it was hard to get a firm feel for it, but wow - what a great show!
  19. Looks like there will be an announcement soon! Mods: If there is already an official 2016 thread, sorry could not find one. Delete this topic or merge.
  20. Hello drum corps family! My name is Kayla Cavano and I'm a Junior Music Education/French horn performance major at Miami University in OH. I have recently been contracted to march with The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and am looking for sponsors. With paying for school, rent, and many other expenses a typical college student has to pay, an additional $3,400 plus about $1,000 in flights to CA is too great an expense to bear alone. Marching with The Blue Devils has been my dream ever since I saw my first drum corps show in 2008. However, I can't do it by myself so I'm asking for your help. After just completing our February camp, it's safe to say that this summer is going to be incredible. Being a music education major, there is nothing more valuable than marching drum corps and working with some of the best staff not only in DCI, but in the instrumental music activity. I can't wait to learn from this staff and become a better musician, athlete and educator. Marching with The Blue Devils will give me the tools to change my future students' lives. We all remember the first drum corps show we saw. For me, it was 2008 Phantom Regiment that made me fall in love with the activity. I fell even deeper in love when I saw 2009 Blue Devils. I can't wait to have that effect on someone this year. If you are willing and able, please consider making a donation to help me march this summer. My GoFundMe page is attached below, but if you would like a letter sent in the mail, send me your address and I will send one out. Thank you so much for your consideration and for helping me make my dreams become reality! https://www.gofundme.com/dmk3u9y4
  21. I'm not one to be blown away by trailer music, but the last Star Wars TFA Trailer has been blowing my mind. With BD doing a Star Wars Duel of the Fates back 1999, why not this one. Perhaps Crown or BD could play an arrangement in the lot. I think I might arrange this myself, anyways Could you see these or other corps playing an arrangement of the this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCN9K_a-MpE
  22. If you haven't seen the new, Blue Devils and The Cadets are filming a reality show in 2016 off-season and competition season. Let's play around with this. What areas will the producers be manipulating, er ... mining... for drama? What are the pitches? THE COMPETITION. They are going to have to feed on speculation until they meet. But when they meet, they spend almost the entire last 2 weeks of July head-to-head. (Schedule may not be entirely accurate. I did this very quickly) July 12th - Dekalb TOC July 18th - Warrensburg TOC July 22nd - Houston TOC July 23rd - San Antonio REGIONAL July 25th - Dallas July 27th - Hattiesburg July 29th - Nashville TOC July 30th - Atlanta REGIONAL July 31st - Winston Salem TOC Aug 2nd - Annapolis Aug 5th - Buffalo TOC Aug 11th ~ 13th - Indianapolis LOVE! Boyfriends/girlfriends that tour together! Oh the drama! LOVE across distance! Boyfriends/girlfriends that tour with different corps! Oh the unkown and the drama! LOVE across enemy lines! Boyfriends/girlfriends that tour with the enemy! Specifically BD/Cadets! Staff across enemy lines! This could be tough. Not a lot of crossover between BD and Cadets staff as there is with some other corps. Is there any? Also eligible "this staff marched BD/Cadets but teaches Cadets/BD!" FAMILIA! I march with my bro, sis, etc. Even better ... I march BD/Cadets but my bro, sis etc marches Cadets/BD! :big hug: My mom, dad, grandparents marched here. My mom, dad, grandparents MARCHED WITH THE ENEMY! INTRA-CORPS ADVERSITY Practice is so hard! Little-to-no quality sleep! Weather is bad! (Heat is a given. Days of rain or drought?) Sparse or unappetizing food! (good luck getting the corps to play along with this one) I've been injured! Member has problems at home! Member is here against the odds! How do we fill these holes? Add your pitch for show "drama" topics! Check back later and see what we get right and wrong!
  23. Hello all, First, I apologize for two things, first is forgive me if I've started this thread in the wrong category on the forums, I'm very new here. Second, is forgive me if my questions sound ridiculous, I'm new to the world of percussion/corps drumlines. Anyway, I have some questions. I'm Greg, and I'm starting snare lessons in August. I recently purchased a high tension snare drum from Sound Percussion Labs. The snare sounds great, but doesn't produce the sound I'm looking for. Right now, the snare (out of the box) produces that "rat-a-tat" traditional snare sound. I, however, am searching for that "table top" or "formica" sound that every corps uses now. Not really using the "crank the heck out of the top head" technique, but still a table top corps sound. The snare is currently equipped with a Remo Falams II batter, and a Remo Ambassador Snare Side. It's just a basic clear ambassador. I've heard around that the best combo would be a Remo Black Max batter, and a Falams II snare side. However, since I have a Falams II on the batter already, how would it sound if I kept the current batter, but put a Falams II snare side on the bottom? I fully intend to replace both heads at some point, but can only purchase one at a time for now. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! ~KingGreGre
  24. Surprised not to see a thread yet for this show: DCI Dallas, presented by North Texas Festival of Drums Monday, July 20, 2015 -- 7:00 p.m. CDT Wildcat Ram Stadium Lake Highland High School 9449 Church Road Dallas, Texas 75238 Corps in performance order: Open Class Guardians Genesis World Class Mandarins Troopers Colts Crossmen Blue Stars Blue Knights Santa Clara Vanguard Blue Devils Source: DCI. If anyone has details on exact performance times or judges, by all means chime in. Most recent scores have BD at 87.300, SCV at 84.825, and BK at 81.900. It's pretty unlikely any of them will change positions, but what will their scores be? Will Stars catch Xmen? Will Colts catch Troop? How will Guardians do in their final performance this year?
