  2. Are you in the NYC/tristate area and want to march Drum Corps? Crimson Kings Drum Corps RECRUITING BRASS, FIFE, DRUMS and COLOR GUARD for Soundsport this summer. Who we are… For those of you who may not have heard of us, we are the Crimson Kings Drum Corps. We are a junior corps established in 1953, our history is of award winning competitions, championships and exhibitions, one of the only remaining New York City Drum corps, we march with the classic G bugle sound. Practices are “weekends only” and are conveniently located in NYC Chinatown. We offer a lighter rehearsal schedule and one of the lowest dues of any competing drum corps. If you want to march but are not sure if you have the time or money, we may be the corps for you! We have a dedicated, friendly staff and membership that have been involved in the activity at all levels. Some of these corps present and past members and staff have marched/taught include the Cadets, Cadets2, Buccaneers, Caballeros, Norwalk Drum Corps, Cadets of New York. We work hard but also have a great time! Our 2014 soundsport show includes well known classic drum corps themes and selections from Joe Hisaishi(castles in the sky, Spirited away). Our members are having a great time learning these pieces, which are popular in both the classical and drum corps world, and we know that the audience and judges will love them too! Come down to our rehearsals, which are Sundays 11:30AM to 3PM. We rehearse at 62 Mott Street, NY. NY. 10013 https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en All we ask is that you come down and watch, there is NO obligation…once you see and hear what is going on, you will WANT to join! We invite you to march with us this year! crimsonkings.com facebook.com/crimsonkings info@crimsonkings.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STC9WxWvsvo

  8. I was just glancing at the live blog of the Bands of America grand nationals, held earlier this evening, and noticed Michael Boo's report that Marcus (TX) High School's show "Charmed" featured a serpent, the instrument that more or less preceded the tuba, having been used from the mid-16th through early-19th centuries. This appearance tickles me because in my youth, I performed in a Medieval/Renaissance instrument band, though never on serpent (we didn't have one), but sometimes, falteringly, on its cousins, the cornett and lizard. (From time to time, I have argued that if any woodwind instrument is to be permitted in drum corps, it must be the shawm, which needs no amplification.) Every now and again, one sees a serpent (or perhaps an ophliceide or a bombardon) at TubaChristmas events, along with more common novelties like helicon tubas and double-belled euphoniums. Would such an instrument be permitted in DCI? In addition to percussion and electronic instruments (ugh), DCI's rules permit any bell-front brass instruments (in all keys) except trombones and sousaphones. From this Wikipedia article (see also the wonderful illustrations on this page) it appears that there were some serpents with front-facing bells. But does "brass" in DCI's terms refer to the so-called "brass family" of instruments, or is it understood that such instruments must be metallic? Serpents are typically made of wood encased in leather. And would it be loud enough to be heard without amplification? (Michael: was tonight's serpent miked or acoustic?) Oh, and while I'm on the subject of the BoA live blog, last year I asked whether DCI was missing a good promotional opportunity by not advertising in the souvenir program at the Ohio Music Education Association state championships, where approximately 120 bands with 12,000 students perform and thousands of parents also are in attendance. (Bands of America does advertise in the OMEA program.) Responses here were mixed, but several people said there'd be no point, because all the attendees are surely familiar with DCI. Well, well, well ... it turns out that even people who follow the supposedly more elite bands in BoA, whose championships are conducted in the same venue as DCI's, aren't as well-informed as you might guess. Members of the Cavaliers drumline performed as the bands filed out for the awards, and in the blog I read: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Guest: "Who are the Cavaliers?" Michael Boo: "The Cavaliers are a drum and bugle corps from a suburb of Chicago. Drum and bugle corps is a summer activity. They have members from around the country. Their drum line gave a clinic earlier today at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention across the street from the stadium." ... (Different) Guest: "Gonna be weird till one year later. (no competition)." Michael Boo: "Do you know about WGI Winter Guard and WGI Indoor Marching Percussion events? It will help you get through you withdrawal. And then there's drum corps in the summer!" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The BOA winner this year, so I read, was The Woodlands High School, also from Texas, with "Crossing Boundaries". From a bad youtube video of their BOA regional performance a week or two ago, they do appear to have had a pretty good show, and not too heavy on the electronics, which I always appreciate. Congratulations to them.

  19. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ City Sound Drum & Bugle Corps Los Angeles, CA. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE http://www.city-sound.org Contact: Nathaniel Lewis Tel: 323-228-7231 email: nlewis@city-sound.org CHARLIE GROH ACCEPTS VISUAL MANAGER POSITION WITH CITY SOUND Born to itinerant beet farmers from North Dakota during the dust-bowl of the 1930's, Charles Nelson Groh has been a creative force since shortly after his birth. As the 10th (and last-born) of the Groh siblings, much of young Charles' formative years were spent in the care of his older brothers and sisters - as his parents sought work to sustain their large family. Left to doodle on his own and blessed with a vivid imagination, Charles was creating pencil and crayon sketches before the age of 4. By the time he was 10 and entered the 9th grade, he was an accomplished photographer - with photos published in the Fargo Chronicle and Bismark Times. Some referred to him as a prodigy. Now, recognized as the 'Zen Master' of the marching arts, Charlie has been a student, performer, instructor, designer, and director of marching bands and drum corps. As a member of the original DCI World Champion Anaheim Kingsmen in the early 1970s, and recently returned as the visual instructor and marching member for the Alumni Corps, The Kingsmen made their debut return at the Drum Corps International World Championships in 2007. Over 200 former members, now in their 40's thru 60's, returned to the field to perform and amaze audiences. Currently, Charlie has again taken his highly sought after marching expertise to the field with City Sound Drum and Bugle Corps From Los Angeles, CA. as Visual Manager for the corps. Everyone here at City Sound thinks Charlie Groh is exactly what the corps needs to take that next evolutionary step to a higher level of the marching arts. We are extremely excited and proud to have charlie Groh on our staff as the new Visual Manager! Sincerely Nathaniel W. Lewis, Executive Director City Sound Drum and Bugle Corps http://www.City-Sound.org

  21. Hi DCPers! I cannot wait to record our new music! If you enjoyed Resonance and are looking forward to hearing where I take the next album, watch my kickstarter video below. Be an integral part of this next project. We've put together some very fun incentives for helping us reach our goal including the Monette Prana Ajna Bb trumpet used to record "Resonance". We can do this together! Please share, spread the word and donate if you're able! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/egogrowth/joey-pero-album-jazz-trumpet Much love! jP
  22. The Skyliners had their first full corps rehearsal yesterday. We had about a 75% return of members from the Open House. If we count those that we knew were missing, we have about an 85% percent return. We had a full day of marching, movement, sectionals and ensemble. As always, we close the rehearsal day singing our corps song. Here's a video montage of the day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW9litFgOUg&feature=youtu.be The forecast calls for Blue Skies!!!
