SouthSong is a grassroots, all-age drum and bugle corps based in the Northeast Alabama/Southeast Tennessee/Northwest Georgia region. Our surplus proceeds will be going to low income, at risk music programs and those in the process of rebuilding across the area, as Alabama(particularly) has been cutting band programs for financial reasons for the last several years. We are hosting auditions March 1, 2015 at Northeast Alabama Community College in Rainsville, AL at 12pm CST. We are hopeful for a great turnout and an exciting journey for this area seeing its first ever DCA Corps. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 16, 2015. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is proud to announce the Percussion Staff for the 2015 season. With Percussion Arranger Eric Boylan returning to the Skyliners for a second year to arrange and design their 2015 percussion show, the Skyliners promise another entertaining and crowd pleasing show! The Skyliners are excited to welcome Thomas Siegfried as Percussion Caption Head, a position he has held previously with the Skyliners. Dr. AJ Merlino joins the Skyliners as Front Ensemble Technician/Coordinator. Patsy Vankirk, Mike Nederhood, Brendan Carter, and Cecily Siegfried are Skyliner Percussion Technicians. Thomas Siegfried is pleased to be back as the 2015 Percussion Caption Head for the Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps. Thomas, a graduate of the Buffalo School of Performing Arts with percussion as his major has worked with Robbie Robison, Dan Delong, Rob Patterson, Billy Kaufman, John Reilly, Chris Feist and a host of others. Thomas has been involved in the Drum Corps activity for well over 25 years and has marched with the Reading Buccaneer, the Westshoremen, the Lehigh Valley Chieftians, the Buccaneer Alumni Corps, the Emmaus Sentinels, and the Reilly Raiders. He has served as Caption head and Percussion Arranger for the New York Skyliners, the Westshoremen, the Lehigh Valley Chieftain, the Emmaus Sentinels, the Buccaneer Alumni Corps, Wilson Central and Southern Junior High Schools, Muhlenburg High School and Kutztown High School. Thomas presently is the Assistant band director and percussion arranger for the Kutztown Senior High School. In addition, Thomas has done work for the undergraduate music program at Kutztown University and most recently has been involved with the graduate program at Indiana University. In 2008 he was given the honor of being inducted into the Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame. Helping to get the Skyliners back on the field in 2014 was a deep heartfelt accomplishment and a very proud moment in his Drum Corps career. Thomas is looking forward to a positive year filled with many more accomplishments for the Skyliner organization. Mike Nederhood, Tenor Technician, grew up in Olympia, WA, and has lived and taught in both Seattle, WA, and eastern Pennsylvania. Mike has been playing all areas of percussion for 25 years. He has been teaching, arranging, and composing for 15. Mike moved to Pennsylvania to be in the heart of the drum corps activity, and he had the privilege of winning three world championships with the Reading Buccaneers, where he marched tenors and played in the pit. Mike is very excited to be in his second year as tenor technician with The Skyliners. During his first year with Sky, he was the DCA tenor individual champion. Mike credits much of his success to the fantastic instruction he has received, especially from his private instructors, Dan Adams, David Reeves, Frank Kumor and Will Rapp. Mike has been a member of the University of Washington marching band, the Seahawk's Blue Thunder drum line, and the Seattle Sounder's Soundwave band; he has performed at Lincoln Center, Benaroya Hall, Super Bowl XL, the Rose Bowl, and on a tour of China. Some highlights of his teaching career include winning two championships as director of the Whitehall indoor percussion ensemble, a silver medal finish as tenor tech with the North Penn Marching Knights, a gold medal finish as a percussion instructor with the Warwick marching band, and winning the Puget Sound Festival of Bands as pit tech with the Kamiak Show Band. Mike currently works with Lake-Lehman high school and the Wilkes University Marching Colonels. Mike holds an AA degree from Seattle Central Community College and a BA in Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington. He also attended Kutztown University in music performance. Dr. A.J. Merlino received his DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) Degree from UNLV (University of Nevada Las Vegas) in 2014. He received his MM (Master of Music) Degree at UNLV in 2012, and his BA (Bachelor of Arts in Music) in 2010 at Kutztown University. A.J. is the author of The Percussionist Bodybuilder: Optimizing Performance Through Exercise and Nutrition. He is a member of the Percussive Arts Society; National Academy of Sports Medicine; and Performing Arts Medicine Association College Music Society. A.J. Merlino’s intense and versatile performing style has made him a highly sought after percussionist for the past decade. His playing has taken him around the world including Scotland, Croatia, Greece, Thailand, Australia, and Argentina. He has also collaborated with famed percussionists Michito Sanchez, Pepe Jimenez, Christian Tamburr, Bernie Dresel, and Kurt Rasmussen. Merlino has worked as music director, composer and performer for many projects held at The Venetian, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, and Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas as well as the production show Resurrecting Sin City, which premiered in Las Vegas and traveled to Adelaide, Australia in 2012. As a clinician, he has presented to numerous colleges, high schools, festivals and has worked for the International House of Blues with Kurt Rasmussen. Patsy Vankirk, Snare Drum Technician, has been teaching percussion for 30 years. She began teaching at Shikellamy High School upon graduation from there. Other high schools she has worked with while living in Pennsylvania were Southwestern and Bloomsburg high schools. She also marched with the Reading Buccaneers from 1998 through 2000. She then moved to Rochester, NY and began performing and instructing with Empire Statesmen from 2002-2010. Patsy is currently in charge of the battery at Victor High School, Victor, NY. During her time there, the marching band has won 7 New York championships. She is also involved in the Victor Indoor Percussion Ensemble (VIPE) , who are a 4-time State Champion. In 2010, "VIPE" were a Scholastic A finalist at WGI championships in Dayton, Ohio. Brendan Carter, Bass Drum Technician, has been teaching percussion at local high schools since 2008. He began teaching at Lake-Lehman High School under the direction of former band director Greg Riley. While at Lake-Lehman Brendan also began working with the indoor percussion ensemble. During his time at Lake-Lehman the percussion consistently placed in the top 10 in TOB and in 2009 Lake-Lehman won the TIA Scholastic Middle School Percussion Championship. Since then Brendan has worked with Wyoming Area High School from 2009 to present, Pittston Area High School 2010-present, as well as Dallas High School 2013-present. In 2010 Brendan became a Vic Firth educator. At Wyoming Area, Brendan directs the Indoor Percussion ensemble which has won the 2012 Scholastic Novice Percussion and the 2012 Scholastic Middle School Stationary Percussion Championships in TIA. While at Pittston Area, the percussion has consistently achieved the high percussion award in the Independence Open conference at Cavalcade Championships. Brendan is currently the marching band director at Pittston Area High School. Cecily Siegfried is returning to the Skyliners as Cymbal Technician. Cecily Siegfried brings to the Skylines years of experience in performing and teaching bands and drum corps. She will be lending her talents once again to our cymbal line. Cecily has been a performance and musical educator for numerous Drum Corps and countless bands and indoor units including the Westshoremen, Buccaneers, Chieftains, Governor Mifflin, Parkland, Cumberland Valley, Blue Mountain, Whitehall and Northern Lebanon to name a few. As a 5 time DCA world champion and former member of Up with People, she brings the work ethic, knowledge and experience to encourage members to strive to exceed their own expectations. She was a member of the Macy’s All Star Drum Corps in 1991, 1992 and 1994, and was inducted as an associate member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2005, Cecily became the first inductee of the Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame. 2015 Sunrisers Show Announcement - “COME FLY WITH ME” How would you respond if someone said, “You can travel the world for the price of a seat at a drum corps contest?” That is the option available to those who will see the Long Island Sunrisers in 2015. The journey is called “Come Fly With Me.” “When we sat down to map out the course of the corps, we wanted to choose a show that was audience-friendly, artistic and true to the identity of the Sunrisers,” program coordinator Gene O’Brien states. “Many routes were open to us, but this one really excited the staff as being a Sunrisers production, with a twist.” “The concept was chosen because the staff felt that a travelogue would present excellent opportunities visually combined with a limitless array of music,”O’Brien states. “During a conference call in the early fall, one participant said that the concept reminded him of an iconic Frank Sinatra travelogue concept album from the 1950s ‘Come Fly With Me’. JD Shaw, our brass arranger, thought that tune would be a perfect launching pad for this international journey.” The show opening evolved into a flight from New York’s JFK Airport to Europe. Keep your eye on the Sunrisers color guard this year, led by Nick Ashley and Budd Williams as they take us on this visual journey with the first stop being Spain. “The paso doble is a great Spanish dance form, so Alfred Reed’s ‘El Camino Real’ seemed a perfect choice,”O’Brien said. “This is music with lots of fire and drive. What really excites me is the opportunity for the front ensemble and brass to engage in a conversation. Organic design is important to us,”he states. From Spain, the Sunrisers will bring the audience to Italy. “So many pieces could fit this bill, but JD gravitated to Mascagni’s ‘Cavalleria Rusticana.’ This was an excellent selection, because it is such a great tune that has so far flown under the drum corps radar. It is so difficult to find material that hasn’t been picked over by drum corps, but this piece is a gem,’ O’Brien says. The Sunrisers entourage then travels to India, in which the percussion features within “Jai Ho” from the hit movie franchise “Slumdog Millionaire.” This film is the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” states O’Brien: “This is a great opportunity for us to explore ethnic percussion. Kevin Murphy, our new percussion writer and caption head, presented this material and is very excited about producing it for the field. We are equally excited.” The journey so far has been fun, but the Sunrisers are working their way back to the mainland. France, in the form of “Marseilles” is the conclusion of the European trek and springboard for the return to the mainland. Staff coordinator, Frank Mauriello states, “We as a staff are extremely excited about this upcoming season and it is one of the most anticipated seasons to date for the Sunrisers. We have assembled one of the most experienced rosters of staff that we have ever had, with JD Shaw, Bobby Jones, and Kevin Murphy taking the lead on the design team.” The design team and instructional staff have many years of experience and knowledge coming from all over the drum corps landscape; ranging from The Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cadets, The Blue Devils, The Blue Stars, Syracuse Brigadiers, Reading Buccaneers, and Phantom Regiment and more. Frank Mauriello continues, “Obviously, this top notch team is no stranger to success and we’re looking forward to having them share their wealth of knowledge with our members, as well as help the Sunrisers soar to new heights in their 2015 production, ‘Come Fly With Me.’”

The Skyliners are excited to welcome back Scott Carey as Brass Caption Head, and to announce Ryan Lamoreaux’s new position of Assistant Brass Caption Head. Doreen Sandor, Bob Fizette, Kevin Davenport, Rachel Ewaniuk, and Adam Helker will be Skyliner Brass Technicians. Scott Carey received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Susquehanna University in 1990. He has pursued additional studies at Villanova University, and through the University of The Arts of Philadelphia, where he studied with Quincy Hilliard, Jerry Nowak, Ed Sueta, and Denis DiBlasio. An educator for 23 years, Scott has been the band director at Shikellamy High School for fifteen years. For seven years previously Scott held the positions of Band Director, Choir Director, Play Director, and Instrumental Music Supervisor at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School, Shamokin. He taught general music, instrumental and vocal classes. At the same time he also held the posts of Assistant Marching Band Director at Selinsgrove HS, Marching and Music instructor and Drill designer for Mifflinburg HS, Marching and Music Instructor for Shikellamy, Drill Designer for Lewisburg HS, and Assistant Marching Instructor for the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps. Scott remains active as a performer, composer, and arranger. He has performed with the Reading Pops Orchestra, Susquehanna Valley Chorale, Unico Band, Pottstown Band, Centerport Band, Bucknell University Orchestra, Seasoned Sounds, the Milton Community Band and for musicals for the Rockwell Theater, Warrior Run HS, Selinsgrove HS, Conrad Weiser HS, Milton HS, and Mifflinburg HS. Scott performs in Director Jazz and Concert Bands during District and Region Band Festivals and String ensembles at District Orchestra Festivals. His original compositions have been performed at Diocesan Chorus and Jazz Festivals. Ryan Lamoreux is a 2008 graduate of Hazleton Area High School. He holds an Associates Degree in music recording from Luzerne County Community College. Ryan has worked as an assistant band director for the Greater Nanticoke Area Marching Band since 2010. In 2008, Ryan marched with the Reading Buccaneers. He also performs with ensembles throughout the NEPA region including the Scranton Brass Orchestra, Wilkes University Civic Band, Wyoming Valley Band, and the Hazleton Liberty Band. Ryan is currently on staff with the Wilkes University Marching Colonels. Doreen Sandor is thrilled to return to Sky’s Brass staff for 2015. Her drum corps teaching career spans 40 years. A New York Skyliner Lifetime Member, Doreen is also Assistant Director. Doreen joined the Skyliners in the Fall of 1979, when women were first welcomed into the corps’ horn line. She has been the Skyliners’ Brass Caption Head, Assistant Brass Caption Head, Brass Instructor, Assistant Drum Major, Assistant Director, Secretary, and Director of PR/Publicity. Doreen has played Mellophone, French Horn, Soprano, in the pit, and marched in the Championship American Section. In 2007, she played in the New York Skyliners Mini-Corps and played Mellophone with the 2012 and 2013 New York Skyliners Alumni Corps. Doreen has also been Brass Caption Head, arranger and/or instructor for corps in numerous Associations, including DCA, DCI, Garden State Association, Nassau Suffolk Association, British Youth Band Association (BYBA) and DCUK, and has arranged music for and/or taught corps and brass lines in the States and in England (DCUK). These corps include the Skyliners, Lehigh Valley Chieftains, Conquest Alliance (1986 and 1987 DCUK Champions), N. Y. Chinese Crimson Kings, St. Joseph’s Brigade, and St. Matthias “Blue Max” to name a few. Doreen was part of Kidsgrove Scouts’ staff when they competed in DCA in 2012. She holds a B.A., Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in Flushing, New York and teaches Elementary General Music and 4th & 5th Grade choruses in an upstate New York State school district. Bob Fizette returns to the Skyliners’ brass staff for his 14th season as a Skyliner. For most of Bob’s drum corps career he has played lead soprano, been a soloist, and taught. He marched with the Wind Gap Blue Eagles in 1979. In 1980, Bob played lead soprano and a solo for Avant Garde from Saratoga Springs, New York; they finished in the Top 25 in DCI. Bob has taught brass/marching at the Troy Volunteers (NY) for 1982 - 1983 DCI seasons and brass/drill design for Targets Drum & Bugle Corps 2007 -2009. He marched with the Reading Buccaneers from 1981 – 1990, and was brass instructor from 1987 – 1992. Solos include "Rainmaker", "Wind Machine", “Nutville", "Cuban Overture", "Shostakovich's Symphony #5", "Captain from Castille," "Batman" and "Pie Jesu." Bob was a trumpet soloist with the College of St. Rose Jazz Band in 1981 - 1982. He taught brass at Lehigh Valley Chieftains in 1998, and joined the New York Skyliners in 1999. Skyliner solos include: “It’s Alright With Me”; “God Bless The Child”; “I Want More”, “Last Tango”, “I Have Dreamed/We Kiss in The Shadows”; “Prelude, Fugue and Riffs”; “Skyfire Tango”; a duet in “Bohemian Rhapsody”; Feeling Good/Blue Skies”, “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, and the ‘four notes’ at the Finale. He performed with the 2007 New York Skyliners Mini-Corps, the Skyliners Street Corps, and joined the New York Skyliners Alumni Corps for the 2012 and 2013 seasons, playing lead and some solos. Bob is an Assistant Director of the Skyliners, and is proud to be part of the team that brought the Skyliners back onto the field of competition. Kevin Davenport has played brass instruments for the past 24 years, 16 of them playing Baritone/Euphonium. He attended Mansfield University as a Music Therapy major from 2000-2003. While at Mansfield, Kevin played in the Pride of Pennsylvania Mansfield University Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Lab Band, and Tuba Euphonium Ensemble. In 2001, Kevin joined the Army Reserves 78th Army Band in Fort Dix, NJ, where he was a Euphonium Bandsman and also played trombone for their jazz band from 2001-2003. Kevin brings 13 seasons of experience marching and teaching Marching Band at Northwest Area, Dallas Area High Schools and Mansfield and Bloomsburg Universities. In 2010 and 2011 Kevin served as the Drill Technician for the Dallas Area Marching Band; he wrote all drill and visuals in 2011 while working with the brass section. Kevin went to Bloomsburg to continue his studies toward a degree in Music Education at Bloomsburg University. Rachel Ewaniuk has a Bachelors of Music Degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. She majored on trumpet in Music Education and Music Technology, and marched four years with the Spirit & Pride of Pennsylvania Marching Band. Rachel was a featured soloist in her senior year, and auditioned into the elite Concert Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Brass Band. She was also a member of the symphonic band, jazz lab band and trombone choir. Rachel has spent the last three summers marching lead trumpet with the Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps from Princeton, NJ. In the 2012 and 2013 seasons, she was a featured soloist and in the 2014 season she was in a featured small ensemble. Rachel is 4th to 6th Grade Band Director at the Lehigh Valley Academy in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She also teaches private instrumental lessons through The Lesson Center in Coopersburg and Trexlertown, Pennsylvania. Adam Helker currently attends the University of Maryland, working towards a Bachelor of Arts in Physics Education, with a minor in Music. He was a Lead Trumpet for Cadets 2 in 2013, Lead Trumpet for the Bluecoats in 2014, and returned to Cadets 2 in the post-DCA season to play Lead Trumpet with Cadets 2. As a member of the UMBC Wind Ensemble, Adam has participated every semester he has been a student at UMBC. For the past two years, he has served as the ensemble’s principal trumpet. As many of you already know back in 1991 a group of former members of the famed Mighty St. Joe's Junior Corps, Batavia NY, along with several other drum corps nuts got together and started Mighty St. Joe's Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps. Their goal was to perform on a non-competitive basis and keep the "good, old times" of drum corps alive. Today, as 2015 arrives, the corps is proudly preparing for it's 25th consecutive year. Over the years MSJ has experienced and survived the true test of time. Our evening blasts to life in a high-octane jazz club where “Nutville”, one of our favorite big band productions, begins. We need a breath of air and escape outside, only to catch the plaintive sounds of “Harlem Nocturne” echoing from a smoky club down the block. Thinking we might catch a break, we're in for a big surprise when the band suddenly lights up the joint with “Jump, Jive and Wail”, Louis Prima’s dynamite up-tempo hit. Jammed with driving drums, pulsing rhythm, and dynamic horn moments, this iconic swing tune leaves us exhausted. The Conquistadors Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce it's 2015 program entitled "La Fiesta Popular." The corps will be performing arrangements of three pop music hits with a Latin style twist that is guaranteed to be entertaining. The corps will open with a rendition of the Jennifer Lopez/Pitbull hit "Dance Again" from the summer of 2012. The program will continue with the slightly mysterious dance club number "Burn" by Ellie Goulding. The song was made popular with the release of the 2014 film "Divergent" and the corps will take an interesting twist on the song that has to wait to be seen. The show will close with Don Omar's "Zumba" which is inspired by the dance fitness craze of the same name. The corps will pull out all the stops on this one to bring the audience on a journey through the driving rhythms and musical colors that simulate a fiesta on the beaches of Puerto Rico. The Conquistadors are planning local community performances for 2015 and are working towards an appearance at the mini corps competition at the 2015 DCA Championships. The corps is well known for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, and their 70th Anniversary production will continue that tradition. Their opener, “Meglio Stasera” (known in English as “It Had Better Be Tonight”) is a 1963 pop song with music by Henry Mancini, Italian lyrics by Franco Migliacci and English lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was composed for the 1963 film ‘The Pink Panther’, where it was performed by Fran Jeffries. The Skyliners have chosen Michael Bublé’s treatment of this song, which was featured on his 2007 album, ‘Call Me Irresponsible’. Bublé's version is an adaptation of the musical arrangement made for the great songstress, Lena Horne. “Whatever Lola Wants” is another popular song, sometimes known as "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets". The music and words were written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the 1955 musical play, ‘#### Yankees’. The song was also used by Mario Lopez and his partner Karina Smirnoff in Season 3 of Dancing with the Stars, when their tango to it was voted the best celebrity dance ever by the judges. More recently, people may have heard this song in a 2011 Pepsi Commercial that featured Sofia Vergara and David Beckham. "Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones. The Connecticut Hurricanes are excited to announce the addition of WGI Director of Percussion and Hall of Fame member Mark Thurston to the position of Percussion Arranger for the 2015 season. Mark began his drum corps career as a snare drummer with the Royaleers Drum & Bugle Corps in his hometown of Utica, NY. In the early 70’s, he became a member of the Yankee Cadets and in 1976, he joined the Avant Garde Drum & Bugle Corps from Saratoga Springs, NY. From 1979 to 1982 he marched in the Crossmen’s snare line. After his age-out, he was asked to join their percussion staff and went on to serve as their Percussion Caption Head and Arranger from 1984 to 1996. In 2003, he was elected to the Crossmen Hall of Fame. Mark joined WGI Percussion in 1996, first as an adjudicator and then as the Percussion Educational Director in 1997-1998. Since 1999, he has been the Percussion Director and has been recognized as a driving force behind the significant growth of the indoor percussion activity. He has been a marching percussion artist and clinician for Zildjian cymbals since 1985. The Zildjian-Mark Thurston scholarship has been presented to WGI percussionists since 2010. He was elected to the WGI Hall of Fame in 2006. In addition to his work with the Crossmen, Mark’s drum corps experience includes arranging and instructing the Spirit of Atlanta (DCI), the Westshoremen (DCA) and most recently, the Reading Buccaneers (DCA). The Bucs won the DCA championship in 2012, 2013 & 2014 when he served on their staff in the role of Program Consultant and Music Ensemble Supervisor. They also took the DCA percussion title in 2012 & 2014. He was a Drum Corps Associates (DCA) percussion/music adjudicator from 2005 to 2011. In 2006, he also served as a Drum Corps International (DCI) percussion adjudicator. Mark Thurston is a highly regarded percussion clinician and educator. Adding to his memberships in the Crossmen and WGI Halls of Fame, Mark was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 2014, recognizing his many contributions to the Drum Corps activity. A resident of Limerick, PA, Mark currently teaches percussion at Spring-Ford High School in Royersford, PA.

The Skyliners’ 2015 Production is aptly named “Whatever Lola Wants”. The corps is well known for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, and their 70th Anniversary production will continue that tradition. Their opener, “Meglio Stasera” (known in English as “It Had Better Be Tonight”) is a 1963 pop song with music by Henry Mancini, Italian lyrics by Franco Migliacci and English lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was composed for the 1963 film ‘The Pink Panther’, where it was performed by Fran Jeffries. The Skyliners have chosen Michael Bublé’s treatment of this song, which was featured on his 2007 album, ‘Call Me Irresponsible’. Bublé's version is an adaptation of the musical arrangement made for the great songstress, Lena Horne. “Whatever Lola Wants” is another popular song, sometimes known as "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets". The music and words were written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the 1955 musical play, ‘#### Yankees’. The song was also used by Mario Lopez and his partner Karina Smirnoff in Season 3 of Dancing with the Stars, when their tango to it was voted the best celebrity dance ever by the judges. More recently, people may have heard this song in a 2011 Pepsi Commercial that featured Sofia Vergara and David Beckham. "Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones. The song was released as the “B” side of a single in September 1971, and frequent play by Disc Jockeys helped make it a breakthrough hit for Withers instead. It reached number six on the United States R & B Chart, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the time. This song won the Grammy for Best R & B Song in 1972. It has also been featured on popular, more recent, movies and TV Shows. Some of its appeal is that this song has been covered by many artists, in a variety of styles. The Skyliners are no strangers to the musical, ‘West Side Story’ (1957), and will bring a fresh take on the "Tonight Quintet". Music is by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim. ‘West Side Story’ was based on a conception of Jerome Robbins, who directed and choreographed the entire musical. The five parts of the quintet are sung by the Jets, the Sharks, Tony, Maria, and Anita in anticipation of the expected rumble that evening. With Bernstein’s genius, he begins the song with the parts sung in turn, and eventually the parts overlap to build to the final line, "Tonight," sung by the ensemble in individual parts. The plan to end the Skyliners’ show with the “Tonight Quintet” corresponds perfectly with the fact that this song also culminated in a climactic part of the play. How appropriate that the Skyliners would choose music from musicals, and diverse styles for their 2015 show! Andrew Hayward is the founder of the New Jersey-based marching arts design company, Fusion Marching Designs. He has been active in the marching arts as a performer, educator, and adjudicator for 20 years and has won awards at local, state, and regional competitions. Hayward's design schedule keeps him busy writing for various indoor and outdoor marching ensembles. Hayward holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in clarinet performance and is currently acquiring a D.M.A from Rutgers University under the guidance of Jessica Phillips of the MET Opera. He keeps an active private clarinet studio where he strives to instill the importance of fundamentals and musicality. He has performed in various groups with locals ranging across the United States and into Europe. A former member of The Cadets, he has given back to the activity he loves by inspiring his students to reach for new levels of excellence. In his free time, Hayward enjoys distance running and web/graphic design.
