  3. I'm thrilled to share our 2015 design team announcement with the good people of Drum Corps Planet. From our website: http://mnbrass.org/2014/11/2015-staff/ Blue Devils’ John Meehan joins Minnesota Brass — plus other 2015 staff additions Posted on November 18, 2014 John Meehan celebrates the Blue Devils’ 2014 DCI championship and high brass award in August at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Minnesota Brass is thrilled to announce the addition of Blue Devils luminaryJohn Meehan as arranger and brass consultant. He joins a world-class staff made up of drum corps veterans who know how to build a champion and foster innovation in the marching arts. John is most widely known as an instructor and arranger with the Blue Devils of Concord, Calif., helping to guide the corps to six DCI world championships (including 2014) and nine high brass awards since 1994. He also has been instrumental in establishing the Blue Devils B and C corps as musical forces, with Blue Devils B winning DCI’s Open Class championship this year. John has established himself as a highly sought-after arranger and show creator with a variety of musical ensembles around the globe, from the award-winning James Logan High School Marching Band of Union City, Calif., to Drum Corps Japan champion Yokohama Scouts. As if making a major splash in the marching arts weren’t enough, John is an accomplished composer, too. His key writing credits include the album “The Music Of WYLAND,” the score for the film “Mind Games” and the commissioned concert-band piece “Circe’s Curse.” His performance achievements include playing in a world-champion Blue Devils hornline and soloing in Germany with his college jazz ensemble. “We’re very excited to welcome John Meehan to our design team,” said Eric Molho, executive director of Minnesota Brass. “He will help push our creativity and strengthen the experience for our members, which makes him the perfect addition to Minnesota Brass.” And John isn’t the only new member of the corps’ staff. Also coming aboard are alumni Joe Asleson as visual caption supervisor and Craig Myers as front-ensemble arranger and supervisor. They join returning staffers Joel Matuzak as program coordinator and battery caption supervisor and Wil Furnstahl as color-guard caption supervisor, along with Scott Palmer as brass caption supervisor, in his first full season in that role, and Paul Terry as assistant brass caption supervisor. Here’s a little more about these staff members: Joe Asleson (visual caption supervisor): Joe is the director and visual designer for Minnesota Brass Indoor Drumline and now takes on visual duties for the full field corps. In 2014, he was voted Instructor of the Year by the Minnesota Percussion Association. He serves as the percussion caption head and battery arranger for the Eden Prairie High School Marching Band, as well as battery arranger and visual designer for the Eden Prairie Indoor Drumline. For the 2012 and 2013 seasons, he served as snare technician as well as battery visual instructor and choreographer for the Colts drum and bugle corps of Dubuque, Iowa. He has instructed and designed at various high schools in Minnesota. In 2010 and 2014, he served as the snare section leader with Minnesota Brass, where he first performed in 2005. In 2008, he performed with the Madison Scouts, serving as snare section leader for his age-out season. He performed with Minnesota Brass Indoor in its inaugural season in 2008 and with Music City Mystique (bronze medalist) in 2009. Wil Furnstahl (color-guard caption supervisor): Wil has led Minnesota Brass’ color guard for several years, including the 2011 DCA championship season, when his unit won top honors. He also is the director of MBI Winter Guard, which he has built into a consistent WGI Independent Open Class finalist. He has led several winter guard champions in the North Star Color Guard Circuit, including Park Center High School, Eclipse and Elk River. He has performed with St. Cloud All-City Marching Band, the Royal Guard of the Twin Cities, Heritage Winter Guard of Madison, Wis., and Minnesota Brass. He has been teaching color guard since 1997 and is an adjudicator with the Tri-State Judges Association. Joel Matuzak (program coordinator and battery caption supervisor): Joel has been the program coordinator for Minnesota Brass since 2002 and percussion caption head since 1998. Under his leadership, the corps has won the DCA Open Class Championship (2011) and been a silver medalist five times, as well as winning four DCA percussion titles. He is the design coordinator for the Minnesota Brass Indoor Drumline and has been the head instructor of the Sköl Line, a drumline for the Minnesota Vikings NFL franchise, since 2008. He is highly regarded as an arranger, drill writer, clinician and adjudicator. He has instructed and arranged for many marching ensembles throughout the United States, including the University of Arkansas, Governaires drum and bugle corps, Irondale High School, Waseca High School and Eden Prairie High School. He is a graduate of St. Cloud State University with a degree in music education. He has been the director of instrumental music at Highland Park Senior High School in St. Paul since 1997. Craig Myers (front-ensemble arranger and supervisor): Craig is a percussion educator, clinician, composer and arranger who has worked with many programs throughout the Midwest, including Eden Prairie High School, the Colts and Waconia High School. He also is a staff composer/arranger for JKS Music, and serves on the board of directors for the Minnesota Percussion Association. He started his performance career at Minnesota Brass in 2003 and also has performed as a World Class finalist with Rhythm X (2008 WGI PIW World Champions), the Cadets (Allentown, Pa.) and the Bluecoats (Canton, Ohio). At Eden Prairie High School, he is the front ensemble/sound design arranger in addition to the assistant director of the program’s percussion ensembles. He received his degree in percussion performance from St. Cloud State University. Scott Palmer (brass caption supervisor): Scott returns to Minnesota Brass to lead its hornline, as well as spend a second season as an instructor on the horn staff of the Blue Devils, which won the DCI championship in his first year with the corps. He has performed with Minnesota Brass and the Madison Scouts. He is in his ninth year of teaching at Eden Prairie High School, where his many roles include directing the Eagle Marching Band and Winter Drumline. Under his direction, the marching band has been a Bands of America Super Regional finalist and Minnesota State Marching Band Championships runner-up. He is a graduate of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music with a degree in music education and is working on his master of music in conducting from the American Band College through Sam Houston State University. He is an active member of the music education community in Minnesota as an adjudicator, coach and clinician. Paul Terry (assistant brass caption supervisor): Paul has been on the Minnesota Brass horn staff since 2007 and helped lead the corps to back-to-back high brass awards in 2010 and ’11, as well as the 2011 DCA Open Class Championship. He performed with Minnesota Brass in 2005-06. In 2014, he joined the Colts as a low-brass technician. He directs the bands and orchestras at Maple Grove Junior High School and teaches the Anoka High School Marching Tornadoes. He also has served as trombone coach for the Minnesota Music Educators Association’s All-State Jazz Band for several years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Minnesota and his master’s degree from Boston University. “Our 2015 design team is a great mix of familiar and new faces who are each amazing teachers and writers,” Molho said. “I’m thrilled we have assembled such a talented group to make this season extraordinary.”
  4. The Conquistadors Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce it's 2015 program entitled "La Fiesta Popular." The corps will be performing arrangements of three pop music hits with a Latin style twist that is guaranteed to be entertaining. The corps will open with a rendition of the Jennifer Lopez/Pitbull hit "Dance Again" from the summer of 2012. The program will continue with the slightly mysterious dance club number "Burn" by Ellie Goulding. The song was made popular with the release of the 2014 film "Divergent" and the corps will take an interesting twist on the song that has to wait to be seen. The show will close with Don Omar's "Zumba" which is inspired by the dance fitness craze of the same name. The corps will pull out all the stops on this one to bring the audience on a journey through the driving rhythms and musical colors that simulate a fiesta on the beaches of Puerto Rico. The Conquistadors are planning local community performances for 2015 and are working towards an appearance at the mini corps competition at the 2015 DCA Championships. An open house has been scheduled for December 13th at 10:00AM at the Church of the Nazarene in Owego, NY. Full staff announcements will be made in the coming weeks. For more information on the Conquistadors you can visit us online at www.conquistadorsdbc.com or email us directly at info@conquistadorsdbc.com The Conquistadors Drum & Bugle Corps is sponsored by the Conquistadors Performing Arts Association, Inc., A 501©3 Non Profit Corporation registered in Owego, New York.

  8. The Skyliners’ 2015 Production is aptly named “Whatever Lola Wants”. The corps is well known for performing an exciting, entertaining, and crowd pleasing show, and their 70th Anniversary production will continue that tradition. Their opener, “Meglio Stasera” (known in English as “It Had Better Be Tonight”) is a 1963 pop song with music by Henry Mancini, Italian lyrics by Franco Migliacci and English lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was composed for the 1963 film ‘The Pink Panther’, where it was performed by Fran Jeffries. The Skyliners have chosen Michael Bublé’s treatment of this song, which was featured on his 2007 album, ‘Call Me Irresponsible’. Bublé's version is an adaptation of the musical arrangement made for the great songstress, Lena Horne. “Whatever Lola Wants” is another popular song, sometimes known as "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets". The music and words were written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for the 1955 musical play, ‘#### Yankees’. The song was also used by Mario Lopez and his partner Karina Smirnoff in Season 3 of Dancing with the Stars, when their tango to it was voted the best celebrity dance ever by the judges. More recently, people may have heard this song in a 2011 Pepsi Commercial that featured Sofia Vergara and David Beckham. "Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones. The song was released as the “B” side of a single in September 1971, and frequent play by Disc Jockeys helped make it a breakthrough hit for Withers instead. It reached number six on the United States R & B Chart, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at the time. This song won the Grammy for Best R & B Song in 1972. It has also been featured on popular, more recent, movies and TV Shows. Some of its appeal is that this song has been covered by many artists, in a variety of styles. The Skyliners are no strangers to the musical, ‘West Side Story’ (1957), and will bring a fresh take on the "Tonight Quintet". Music is by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim. ‘West Side Story’ was based on a conception of Jerome Robbins, who directed and choreographed the entire musical. The five parts of the quintet are sung by the Jets, the Sharks, Tony, Maria, and Anita in anticipation of the expected rumble that evening. With Bernstein’s genius, he begins the song with the parts sung in turn, and eventually the parts overlap to build to the final line, "Tonight," sung by the ensemble in individual parts. The plan to end the Skyliners’ show with the “Tonight Quintet” corresponds perfectly with the fact that this song also culminated in a climactic part of the play. How appropriate that the Skyliners would choose music from musicals, and diverse styles for their 2015 show! Come out to The Skyliners’ Open House to find out more, and be part of the initial performance of this production number: Date: Saturday, November 22, 2014 ~ 12:00 - 6:00 P.M. 17. The Skyliners Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to announce the appointment of the following 2015 design staff for the corps’ 70th Anniversary: Brass Arranger: Joey Pero; Drill Designer: Adam Burdett; and Percussion Arranger: Eric Boylan. The Skyliners welcome Joey Pero, Buglers Hall of Fame Member and virtuoso master of the trumpet in the jazz and classical genres, as Brass Arranger. Joey spent a couple of weekends in August working with the Skyliners brass staff and horn line. A highlight of Joey’s drum corps teaching, playing and writing career has surely been working with and inspiring performers, young and mature, in this arena. His passion, talent, flair, high energy performance approach, amazing technicality and the ability to share his expertise with students comes through wherever he teaches. Joey was the DCA Soprano Individual Champion in 2000, 2001 & 2002; DCA Best Soloist in 2002 and 2004; and won the DCA Best Showmanship Award in 2001. He has performed with drum corps such as the Genesee Quest, Ghost Riders, Empire Statesmen and the performance ensemble, The Edge. Indeed, his drum corps soloist debut at the age of 12 caused a sensation. He arranged music for and taught the Renegades. In addition to his classical trumpet training at Juilliard School at Lincoln Center in New York City, Joey Pero also counts music greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Ray Mase, and Charles Schlueter, former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony, as his mentors. Maynard Ferguson hired him to play second chair on his Big Bop Nouveau Band Tour. Joey Pero’s performance venues include the Los Angeles Coliseum, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Las Vegas and stages around the world. Joey released his debut album “Resonance” in 2008 and has been hard at work on his next release. He returned to New York City over the summer to work on a Broadway project called “Bandstand”. According to a report by the New York Post’s Michael Riedel, “Broadway’s next hit could be ‘Bandstand’. His list of accomplishments and performance venues and successes would be too many to list here. For the Skyliners, historically known as a performance corps who always plays for the audience, Joey’s focus on entertainment and how to bring one’s performance to that next level, will provide an exciting and dynamic brass show. Adam Burdett is returning for his second year as Drill Designer, Drum Major, and Director of Recruiting. He is currently a music teacher in the Pittston Area School District, and has been for the past 12 years. He teaches the Senior High School Concert Band, 9th Grade General Music, and the 4th Grade Intermediate Center beginning band. Adam has been involved as a marching band instructor for the past 20 years, beginning as a percussion instructor upon graduation from High School in 1993. He was the band director of the Award Winning Pittston Area Marching Patriots from 2002-2010. During this time, Adam was also a co-music arranger from 2002-2007, Percussion Arranger in 2002, 2004-2010, and drill designer from 2008-2010. Under his direction, the Marching Patriots were the Cavalcade of Bands Independence Conference Champions from 2008-2010, and Tournament of Band Group 1 Atlantic Coast Champions in 2009. Adam is still the drill designer for the Pittston Area Marching Patriots, who won the Cavalcade of Bands Championship once again in 2011. Adam has been the drill designer for the East Stroudsburg North High School Marching Band since 2011. ESN was the winner of the Cavalcade of Bands Championship in 2012 and in 2013. He also designs drill for the Shikellamy High School Marching Braves, a Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Finalist in 2012 and for the Wyoming Area High School Marching Band in 2012, a TOB Atlantic Coast Finalist in 2012, as well as Pocono Mountain West, Lackawanna Trail, Montrose and Abington Heights. In addition to his responsibilities as a director and instructor, Adam is currently the Executive Vice-President of Cavalcade of Bands since 2009, and an adjudicator for Cavalcade of Bands since 2011. He is the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 9 Treasurer, a position he has held since 2008. Adam resides in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania with his lovely wife Becky and their three cats. Eric Boylan is also returning to the Skyliners as Percussion Arranger for his second year. He lives locally, and is currently the Band Director at Abington Heights. A Lebanon Valley College Music Education graduate, Eric performed professional compositions on marimba, vibraphone and drums. In addition to his experience as a Music Adjudicator with the National Judges Association (NJA), Eric was also the Marching Band Director at Pittson Area High school. Eric has worked as Indoor Percussion Arranger, Director, Consultant and Instructor; Percussion Arranger; Percussion Instructor; and Marching Band Instructor of various local school district programs and several competitive corps in Drum Corps Associates (DCA), such as the Connecticut Hurricanes, Fusion and Hawthorne Caballeros. Awards include the Pittson Area Marching Band being named the 2011 Cavalcade of Bands Independence Open Champions; winning 2010 DCA Class “A” Championship with Fusion; and Lake Lehman winning the 2009 Indoor Percussion (TIA) Championship, the 2007 Group 1 TOB Atlantic Coast Championship.
