  1. New day heading towards a new season. Out with 2023 drum corps season, moving on to 2024. But before i look forward i and many of us still have many days ahead to still reflect on the Incredible 2023 season; on all the shows that was produced and performed. The level of talent across the board was impressive, the competitive nature of the young members were fierce and magnificent to watch. The return and battle for 12th in top 12, the rise of The Mandarins from previous 10th place to 6th. The return of Cadets, The resilience of Cavaliers, The battles of Troop, BS, Colts. The incredible designs and battles between Phantom, Mandarins, Cadets. The Spectacular show down of the top 4; BAC, BC, CROWN, BD was unmatched and thrilling, and the 21st victory of the BD Undefeated streak from 2022 to 2023, technically they haven't lost a show since finals 2019, which is another record in the history books. What would ya'll like to individually like to see Blue Devils explore for the 2024 show. Should it be a conceptual, and what kind of concept ? Should it be purely musical, and what musical genre would you like for them to explore ? Should it be another arts show ? Should it be light heart , or Dark themed ? Should be Story telling ?
  2. Will a more experienced, seasoned group keep the Ott, take the Zingali and Sanford, and finally 3-peat? Your thoughts?
  3. I don’t speak French or whatever that language is that is in the narration that the Blue Devils are using. But I would sure like to know what they’re saying in English? And how does it fit into the show? Does anyone know?
  4. Today I talked with the music teacher at my high school (I an currently not in the music program, i'm pursuing film) because I saw a marching band poster on his door. I've been thinking about trying to start a DCI fan club at my school and wanted to ask him if he had any students that were into it. He told me he was in BD in the 90s and I (totally did not) do a little fangirl squeal. He told me about our school's band program, which is a just-for-fun extracurricular that meets a couple days a week. I'm so glad to be at a new school where I can leave it all behind and enjoy music without all the pressure. Next year, I might return to the marching arts!!!
  5. Blue Devils' nation. What do you expect from the 2022 edition of BD returning to the field ? What changes would you like to see, and what predictions do you hold in regards to music writing and selections ? Will there be a shift in design approach, and how influential do you think they "might" become in the current/post pandemic of the activity? Will there be a shift with the organization, changing and morphing into a bigger and a better entity that they are now, expanding and growing way stronger; Or do we see a dwindling down of who BD is for past many years ? For discussion sake, let's discuss and answer some of these questions and let's talk about our expectations and predictions. Will we see a WOW BD production for 2022 ? Or Will it be the WTF! BD show. What's your thoughts on this ? What type of shows do you like most of BD ? Ps. Even the bashers are welcome to give their thoughts 🤪 I'm most interested to know what you think.
  6. Last night I watched Derby for the first time, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. And I mean that in a bad way. What in the world was this show about? Horses? Marriage? Dancing? Racing? I really enjoy abstract shows but this one was so confusingly bad. Screamer trumpets were worst I've ever heard. That being said, is there anyone here who marched/worked at BD or knows someone who did in 2005? Do you know what the intent of this show was? What was going on through the design process? Hoping I get answers, this is gonna drive me crazy till I die 😵

  8. So it's the beginning of July. We've got a pretty good idea what most of the corps are doing and what many of them have achieved so far. The sleek new uniforms have been revealed, crazy props dragged all over the field, and people are lining up the strollers in the front row in baby-throwing anticipation. I'm always lurking and reading, and from what I can tell, these are the 5 corps with the most hype right now. (In no particular order) Mandarins - These guys have been slowly building a contender the past few years. They've got a great show design and performers that are keeping up with the demand Can they push their way into the top 12 this year? Bluecoats - Their show design is top notch. They're using that zig-zaggy prop in crazy creative ways. You won't be able to buy a bowler hat anywhere in the US come August. Blue Devils - A brass book that's got more runs than after a trip to Taco Bell. The visual is a step behind, but they are already executing at a high level. No one ever counts out BD. SCV - A really complete show design with medalist potential. They're easily keeping up with BD's scores out on the west coast. The circles are the bomb and they use them SO well. Boston Crusaders - They've been running with the new staff hype for a while, and so far they've delivered. Great music and high visual demand. How far up can they go? What do you think? Did I miss someone? Is there a corps that we haven't seen yet that'll make even bigger waves? (OC, Cascades, Surf) This is just my opinion, feel free to debate and discuss.

  11. Anybody else see the Ghostlight segment on CBS Sunday Morning? They did a 10 minute segment about Broadway Theaters and their use of a ...GHOSTLIGHT. How prescient of Blue Devils. Now-were they prescient of Broadway Theater or Drum Corps? I guess they were inadvertently warning us that BOTH would go dark.

  13. Hello! I'm thinking about auditioning for BD synth, and had a couple of questions. 1. About how many people usually audition for synth? 2. Do you have to know MainStage? 3. Would a piece like Chopin's Prelude in B minor (op. 28 no. 6) be okay? (https://musescore.com/classicman/scores/68550) If not, what kind of piece would be suitable to audition with? I assume that it shouldn't last more than 2 minutes, but I could be wrong. 4. What is the audition process like? 5. When did you hear back from BD? Thank you for all your help!
  14. Colts 2019 (When Hell Freezes Over) Mandarins 2018 (and some might say 2019) Music City 2018 (Hell on Wheels) Crown 2015 (Inferno) SCV 2011 (The Devil's Staircase) Seems to be a pretty popular theme. Any ideas why? (Thinking too much about the Texas tour, maybe?)
  15. Hey all, not sure if this is the right way to do this, but I'm looking for a specific recording of BD playing "Legend". I'm not asking for a pirated copy. I just have no idea which performance I'm looking for and was hoping someone might know which recording I'm talking about so I can track it down and get it for myself. Plus, this is IMO the absolute best performance of "Legend" I've heard and you guys should check it out too once I figure out what it is. Every time I try and search for it I always find the wrong recordings so I'd figured I'd ask. Short story - I had a recording of what sounds like an alumni BD group playing this a long time ago. I got it online so I'm not sure of the source, but I have since lost it. Now I have no idea where to find it, what year it is, or what specific performance it was part of. Some details about it that make it stand out as IMO the best recording of them playing it I've heard: * It sounds like an indoor performance with a live audience. I remember a few people shouting "BLUE" at the beginning of the track. * It seems like this was an alumni group. The recording starts with an actual drumset solo (and I can't honestly remember if there was a battery involved). * The mellophone (though it could be marching F horn) solo is godly, especially the very end of it when the chorus comes back. Completely rips through the ensemble. * There's two sops screaming at the end and both of them slide up to the top on the very last note at a huge dynamic level while holding on. That's about all the details I got. Thanks for your help, and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask for this. Figured I'd pop back in here in case anyone knows what I'm talking about.
  16. Offered for sale is a collection of drum corps drumline writing that spans several decades from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cadences, warm-ups, exercises and random bids from some of the greatest percussion arrangers ever to put their beats on a football field for Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Midwest and dozens of other regional circuits back in the day. This collection is over 100 pages from percussion arrangers such as Marty Hurley, Tom Sorensen, Russ Weber, Dennis Delucia, John Wooton, Brian Dufour, Jeff Prosperie, Bart Dixion writing for corps such as Phantom Regiment, Pioneer, Bridgemen, Colts, Blue Devils, Cavaliers, etc. A great historical collection of drumline beats to help build your chops for auditions and the upcoming marching season. All of the arrangements are in page protectors and shipped in a three ring binder. This is also posted on Ebay and you can view photos there. https://www.ebay.com/itm/153353723429 Thanks for looking and feel free to ask any questions.
  17. (OK, maybe some hyperbole there, but read on!) These were Carolina Crown's percussion scores in Finals for the five years prior to last season: 2012 -- 18.800 (6th) 2013 -- 18.700 (6th) 2014 -- 18.450 (7th) 2015 -- 18.950 (5th) 2016 -- 18.675 (5th) (As given at the From the Pressbox website, which does seem to lop off decimals from time to time.) In those five years, it was repeatedly said on these forums and elsewhere (even by the commentators on the cinema screenings) that Crown's percussion was weak, bad, faulty, deficient, imperfect, defective, inferior, poor, lame, inadequate, shoddy, and so forth. And not just relatively bad but absolutely bad. I remember querying this point on more than one occasion. I noted that these are all Box 5 scores and thus, by any absolute measure, Crown was fielding very strong percussion lines. But no, came the replies: it wasn't just that Crown's percussion wasn't as strong as Crown's other elements or as other corps' percussion or that it was (with one exception) keeping them from a championship or medals position; no: Crown's percussion was just not good. That claim was made repeatedly. So these appear to be the five best scores achieved by DCI percussion this past weekend: 17.50 -- Cavaliers 17.50 -- Carolina Crown 17.25 -- Blue Devils 17.20 -- Santa Clara Vanguard 17.20 -- Boston Crusaders (I may have missed one or more, but you get the point. Again I used From the Pressbox as my source.) Not one Box 5 score among them, and yet commentators here are offering a fair bit of praise for these lines. But if you had a time machine and could drop any one of these corps of last weekend into the 2012-2016 Finals, surely their percussion would be crushed by Finals-Crown of those years . . . Wouldn't they? I'm genuinely curious to know what people think about that. Are these 2018 mid-season percussion scores too low? Were Crown's 2012-2016 Box 5 Finals percussion scores too high? That is to say: do Cavaliers right now actually have a Box 5 percussion section? And did Crown by Finals in 2012-2016 still have a Box 4 percussion section (or worse)? (How much improvement in numbers is real, relative to the descriptions on the sheets, and how much is just numbers management?) Or when people say that Crown's percussion as the 2012-2016 seasons ended was bad, is that a serious exaggeration? In scoring terms, where is the dividing line between good percussion and bad percussion anyway? Was Crown's percussion ever very good in those years? Is Cavaliers' percussion section already very good? Feel free to apply any of those questions to other elements or to corps as a whole. Already people are talking about how they have listened to this or that early season performance repeatedly. Does anyone do that with a poor performance? At what point, as far as scores are concerned, does a corps become worth listening to? I look forward to everyone's thoughts.

  20. Hi everyone, as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary. Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts, and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!
  21. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  22. I watched BD on YouTube from DCI Texas (thank you to whoever uploaded it---great job). I'm not a big fan of BD, but their show is a total winner and they will be DCI Champs this year. The "OTL" beginning with the "One-Eyed Sailor" drum ditty sent chills up my spine. Again, I'm not a fan of these "muscle-shirt" uniforms and no hats BUT this is BD's year to lose. No way SCV or CC catches them. Congrats, BD!
  23. What the heck is up with corps in which members are wearing no hats or shakos? The hat/shako was the crowing point of a uniform and truly identified a corps. Especially The Vanguard. Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I'm not liking this trend in DCI at all.
