  4. Offered for sale is a collection of drum corps drumline writing that spans several decades from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cadences, warm-ups, exercises and random bids from some of the greatest percussion arrangers ever to put their beats on a football field for Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Midwest and dozens of other regional circuits back in the day. This collection is over 100 pages from percussion arrangers such as Marty Hurley, Tom Sorensen, Russ Weber, Dennis Delucia, John Wooton, Brian Dufour, Jeff Prosperie, Bart Dixion writing for corps such as Phantom Regiment, Pioneer, Bridgemen, Colts, Blue Devils, Cavaliers, etc. A great historical collection of drumline beats to help build your chops for auditions and the upcoming marching season. All of the arrangements are in page protectors and shipped in a three ring binder. This is also posted on Ebay and you can view photos there. https://www.ebay.com/itm/153353723429 Thanks for looking and feel free to ask any questions.
  5. (OK, maybe some hyperbole there, but read on!) These were Carolina Crown's percussion scores in Finals for the five years prior to last season: 2012 -- 18.800 (6th) 2013 -- 18.700 (6th) 2014 -- 18.450 (7th) 2015 -- 18.950 (5th) 2016 -- 18.675 (5th) (As given at the From the Pressbox website, which does seem to lop off decimals from time to time.) In those five years, it was repeatedly said on these forums and elsewhere (even by the commentators on the cinema screenings) that Crown's percussion was weak, bad, faulty, deficient, imperfect, defective, inferior, poor, lame, inadequate, shoddy, and so forth. And not just relatively bad but absolutely bad. I remember querying this point on more than one occasion. I noted that these are all Box 5 scores and thus, by any absolute measure, Crown was fielding very strong percussion lines. But no, came the replies: it wasn't just that Crown's percussion wasn't as strong as Crown's other elements or as other corps' percussion or that it was (with one exception) keeping them from a championship or medals position; no: Crown's percussion was just not good. That claim was made repeatedly. So these appear to be the five best scores achieved by DCI percussion this past weekend: 17.50 -- Cavaliers 17.50 -- Carolina Crown 17.25 -- Blue Devils 17.20 -- Santa Clara Vanguard 17.20 -- Boston Crusaders (I may have missed one or more, but you get the point. Again I used From the Pressbox as my source.) Not one Box 5 score among them, and yet commentators here are offering a fair bit of praise for these lines. But if you had a time machine and could drop any one of these corps of last weekend into the 2012-2016 Finals, surely their percussion would be crushed by Finals-Crown of those years . . . Wouldn't they? I'm genuinely curious to know what people think about that. Are these 2018 mid-season percussion scores too low? Were Crown's 2012-2016 Box 5 Finals percussion scores too high? That is to say: do Cavaliers right now actually have a Box 5 percussion section? And did Crown by Finals in 2012-2016 still have a Box 4 percussion section (or worse)? (How much improvement in numbers is real, relative to the descriptions on the sheets, and how much is just numbers management?) Or when people say that Crown's percussion as the 2012-2016 seasons ended was bad, is that a serious exaggeration? In scoring terms, where is the dividing line between good percussion and bad percussion anyway? Was Crown's percussion ever very good in those years? Is Cavaliers' percussion section already very good? Feel free to apply any of those questions to other elements or to corps as a whole. Already people are talking about how they have listened to this or that early season performance repeatedly. Does anyone do that with a poor performance? At what point, as far as scores are concerned, does a corps become worth listening to? I look forward to everyone's thoughts.

  7. Hi everyone, welcome to episode 5 of my corps match up series. In this episode, we will be looking the Cavaliers and the Bluecoats. Looking back at the 2017 season, the Bluecoats did some tremendous things. They continued to move away from “traditional drum corps” and are exploring new ways to perform their shows on the field. They finished 5th with a 95.163 at finals. For the Cavaliers, they still kept their traditional corps look in their uniform but it’s slowly becoming more fainter and fainter year by year. Also, the Cavalier did an amazing thing the night of finals. They managed to slide ahead of the Bluecoats and went from 5th to 4th. They finished finals with a 95.200. Having said all that, who do you think will score and finish higher in 2018. Please vote in the poll above and we will find out!
  8. Hi everyone, as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary. Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts, and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!
  9. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Impulse Pacific Crest v.s. Oregon Crusaders Colts v.s. Academy Oregon Crusaders v.s. Spirit of Atlanta Again, these are just my predictions. What are your predictions? Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  10. DCI is a little dry during the off season. I thought it would be cool to start a weekly thread about what performances we loved and didn't love about each corps. I am starting with the Cavaliers because I think they are easy to discuss without things getting out of hand or dying quickly. What are your top 1-5 all time Cavaliers shows? What are your 1-3 least favorites from them? You can go into as much or little detail as possible but please please try to keep things positive!
  11. Corps (in preforming order): Start Time: 7:30 PM Weather: -The Crossmen Partly Cloudy, high of 97 -The Bluecoats -Carolina Crown -The Blue Devils -Santa Clara Vanguard -Phantom Regiment -The Cadets -The Cavaliers WHO'S ALL GOING??? My Predictions: 1st: Cadets 2nd: BD 3rd: Coats 4th: Crown 5th: SCV 6th: Cavies 7th: Phantom 8th: Crossmen
  12. I was planning on trying out for cavaliers in the future and was wondering if I can use my TAMA by Kanstul Mellophone. They are different than most mellos in the way that they have a full horn kicker and not individual valves, they sound different than your everyday mello, and they're smaller and different looking but only when at a carry, the bell looks just like a yamaha or king from the front. this may cause some differences in appearance the corps may not like but I'm not sure. If someone could help me on this issue, it would be appreciated greatly, thanks. I own no rights to the picture posted.
  13. Action Wipes all natural wet wipes is doing a sale for the new year, 20% off with code "FEST2015" This product is really useful for members and spectators all year round, for after rehearsals or at shows. Wet wipes that use all natural ingredients and can be repurposed later on after wash, smell great and don't leave a sticky residue like most baby wipes. Wish I had these when I was marching. http://actionwipes.com/
  14. Where the address is not unknown. It's 500 E. Franklin Ave. That's right: there are two shows in Ohio tonight. Much attention has gone to the Tour of Champions show featuring seven corps in Massillon (which is where I'll be), but three hours to the southwest is a ten others are competing at the 35th annual installment of Soaring Sounds in Centerville, which is a suburb of Dayton. (However, there are even more corps, fifteen to be exact, competing in Indiana tonight, at the Open Class Prelims.) Here is the Soaring Sounds lineup: --Cincinnati Tradition (all age) --Academy --Jersey Surf --Pacific Crest --Oregon Crusaders --Colts --Spirit of Atlanta --Blue Stars --Blue Knights --Cavaliers Show website. According to the website, the first Soaring Sounds was in 1980, but CorpsReps doesn't list a "Soaring Sounds" or Centerville show that year. However, there is a Dayton show listed for July 13, 1980, and I'm guessing that's the one. It resulted in a tie between Crossmen and Spirit of Atlanta, followed by Cadets and Boston Crusaders. I'll kick off discussion with a question that occurred to me as I watched Colts' show last night in Pittsburgh: when the Scarecrow does find Dorothy, how is she going to react to the news that he murdered the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion? Or is he just not going to tell her?
  15. So, I've never marched with a corps, and was needing to pick the brains of the vets out there. My question originates from this season from Crown but has undoubtedly occurred with other corps through history. So, Crown won last year after years of building and vying for that top stop. It finally happens! Expectations for next year are super high. They come out this year starting in the top 3. Okay, they bounced around there for years. Then they slip to fourth, and then fifth. Seeing as their score dropped below 90, it may not be out of the question to go down to 6th. Same thing with the Blue Knights from 97-2001. Got all the way up to 6th and then BAM, out of the top 12. And the same with the Cavies from 07-12. They hover around second or third for 5 years and then down to 8th. As I said, there are probably many examples. The Question: What is going through the heads of staff and members at this point in the year? Have they just given up? Do they feel like they are just "pissin' on a bonfire", where nothing they do helps? Do they keep fighting the good fight? Does arguing break out, and the blame game begin? So, veterans of the game, what more than likely is going on in corps on years like this?
  16. I didn't see a thread on this, but DCI has posted a mini-cam view of the Cavies' show with a camera attached to a marimba and another one attached to a marimba player. View it here. Not for those who suffer from vertigo during Danse Macabre. Enjoy!
  17. I don't see a thread for this show, which should be about half over now. Schedule as per From the Pressbox (CDT): 7:15 Legends 7:32 Colt Cadets 7:49 Genesis 8:26 Colts 8:43 Troopers 9:00 Phantom Regiment 9:17 Cavaliers It looks like a little rain is about to roll through, although I don't think it will last. If you're there, or after you're there, chime in here!
  18. ... "weasel"? Whatever the answer, there's a show there tonight, and I don't see a thread for it yet, so...
